Festival
Harasztiʼs directorial style is as diverse as her own life, which has taken her around the world before landing in Montreal. Her latest triptych of short fiction films explores themes of memory and grieving from different perspectives, exploiting film style in unique and evocative ways.
Surrounded by two advance screenings, the centerpiece of this trilogy, Waning, has been acclaimed for its unusual editing strategies at prestigious festivals around the world. The film investigates memory and death using multiple layers of canted angles within one stationary shot. Layer upon layer builds up until Haraszti delivers the source, and the horror, of the opening shot.
The programmeʼs opening film, Orison, draws attention to topical controversies surrounding the correspondences between religious belief and scientific knowledge. This beautifully melancholic short uses black-and-white cinematography to explore the protagonistʼs struggle with belief and grief in a compellingly personal manner.
The closing film exposes the filmmakerʼs transnational roots and influences. REI tells the story of a “hikikomori” -- an increasingly common phenomenon in Japan and South-Korea that refers to young shut-ins -- who gradually loses contact not just with the outside world, but with reality itself. Upcoming talent Amelie Robitaille gives an stunning performance as the young recluse.
This special screening is the only time that these three films will be screened together.The free event will also include a Q&A with the director, as well as the opportunity to meet the cast and crew. The first 10 people to ask questions in the Q&A will also receive free DVD copies of Waning!

DIRECTOR INFOGina Haraszti was born in Budapest, Hungary. She is a filmmaker with a background in studio arts, interested in the experimental aspects and revolutionary forms of fiction film. She holds an MA in intermedia and earning her MFA in film production. Gina had worked in different media with regard to film, new media, gaming and design. She has experience working with cross-disciplinary teams in leading art & technology labs in both Europe and Canada.
