There is no youth-serving organization in the United States or Canada that changes the lives of girls and young women in the way that Girls Inc. does. The Girls Inc. Affiliate Model defines the practices and approach that comprise our singular approach to youth development for girls. It is the Girls Inc. DNA. The Affiliate Model is not only how we do business, but what sets us apart from any other organization. ELEMENTS OF THE AFFILIATE MODEL

• GIRLS - This is where all our decisions begin and end: how we best serve the girls who need us most, empowering them to grow up healthy, educated and independent. The learnings from our girls directly inform our advocacy agenda to improve the lives of all girls.

• THEGIRLSINC.EXPERIENCE - Our Programming Framework guides the network in creating powerful experiences for girls and provides a scaffolding on which each affiliate’s knowledge of its community’s needs and girls’ interests rests.

• OUTCOMES - Our year-to-year commitment to continuous improvement of the Girls Inc. Experience, coupled with the achievements of Girls Inc. girls, telegraphs to girls, their families, and the world the seriousness we bring to our work.

• BUSINESSFRAMEWORK - Undergirding the Programming Framework and commitment to changing girls’ lives, the Business Framework encompasses Girls Inc. leadership, the strategies we use to pursue funding, and the systems we put in place to maximize all of our resources, including the most important: a talented and passionate workforce.

The Girls Inc. 2017 Annual Conference will focus on building foundational skills in some of these areas, and extending your knowledge to empower you to innovate in other areas. You will find some sessions that are meant to be attended as a team, others where program thought leaders and executives will explore a common theme from two different perspectives. Board leaders will discover a rich experience, with sessions designed to help you build strength in creating a strong Affiliate Model - and a growing affiliate in your community. The 2017 Annual Conference offers sessions for a variety of learning styles:• A block of shorter sessions, allowing you to explore a variety of

topics quickly• More open time, for networking with colleagues, and

connecting with national resources through “office hours”• Workshops to build fundamental skills, and workshops for

seasoned leaders who are looking for an elevated conversation on growth and sustainability.

WHYYOUSHOULDATTEND:

EXPLORE the Affiliate Model, the foundational practices of a strong, sustaining and growing Girls Inc. local organization.

BEINSPIRED by speakers and workshops that prepare you to embrace change and growth.

PARTICIPATE in Girls Inc. history, as the Advocacy and Policy Agenda is adopted.

OPENING SESSION

Welcome to Annual Conference 2017! We are achieving results for girls. And we are a stronger network than ever before, focused on decisions informed by data and based on evidence of how we can make the biggest difference in girls’ lives. This growth requires us to work through a time of change: examining how we’ve operated in the past, trying new strategies in the future, advocating boldly for girls throughout Canada and the United States. Join Judy Vredenburgh, President & CEO, and others for a conversation on managing through a time of change. Hear from members of the team from the American Institutes for Research on the exciting evaluation they are undertaking to provide the network with evidence of the impact you are having on girls’ lives.

ADVOCACY FUNDAMENTALS:

STRATEGIES AND TACTICS

FOR CREATING CHANGE

To elevate our work in supporting girls, it is imperative that each of us is ready to organize and confident in how to do so. Melanie Ross Levin, expert in advocacy communications, will share the latest strategies for how to plan a campaign, identify and inspire supporters, organize and activate those supporters – on- and off-line – and garner media attention to effect change at the local, state and federal level. This training is best suited for participants who are interested in an introduction to advocacy or looking to refresh their skills or knowledge of the latest tactics.

ALL

ADVOCACY IN ACTION:

PUTTING YOUR SKILLS AND STRATEGIES TO THE TEST

Now that you’ve learned the fundamentals of advocacy, it’s time to put new skills to work. In this session, participants will develop a quick response plan on an issue affecting girls – be it potential legislation or a local school or community issue. It will also provide an opportunity to apply skills by simulating a site visit or a lobbying scenario. This session is ideal for those who want to practice skills learned in the Advocacy Fundamentals session, for veteran organizers looking to practice and refine their advocacy skills, or for those who learn best by doing!

JUMPSTARTSESSIONS: The block of sessions offered this afternoon are designed to allow everyone to explore a variety of topics quickly.
