This October, Adath will transition fully from using Siddur Sim Shalem to Siddur Lev Shalem for Shabbat and Festivals. The new siddur is in the same series as the Machzor Lev Shalem we have been using for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the new Pirkei Avot Lev Shalem from the Rabbinical Assembly. But what does Lev Shalem mean? Lev is the Hebrew word for heart, and Shalem means full, complete or whole. Over this next year we will explore what it means to cultivate a Lev Shalem—a wholehearted approach to Jewish living. In other words, what does it mean to be all in?
Adath is the place to bring nachas (joys), your doubts, your curiosity, and your tsuris (troubles) and leave with a whole heart. This book—now renamed our “Annual Recognition of Community”—contains a list of people in our congregation who continually support Adath b’lev shalem—with a whole heart. These pages include heartfelt stories from members of our congregation who have experienced that wholeheartedness at and with Adath. We invite you to take a few moments to read them. On behalf of all the clergy, we wish you a happy and healthy new year and encourage you to spend 5779 living b’lev shalem.

We have changed the name of this booklet from “The Annual Recognition of Giving” to “The Annual Recognition of Community.” This supports the reality that you belong not just to a synagogue, but a sacred community that celebrates your joys, supports you in difficult times and is always here for you whenever you feel the need to be in community. The theme of this book of recognition is Lev Shalem (whole- heartedness). When you read all the names in this book, please try to
feel the heartfelt connection of all the people listed who have given time and resources to our community with a whole and loving heart. May you have a healthy and sweet New Year, Bernie Goldblatt

As you page through this book, you will see the true efforts of kehillah, our sacred community. In 5779, our congregation will explore b’lev shalem, meaning “with a full heart”. Whether you are a young child, a young adult, a young family or an adult of any age, we will explore how we engage in learning, spirituality, and being there for one another with a full heart. What better exemplifies giving to our community b’lev shalem than the myriad of names in this book? Thousands of volunteer hours and gifts of tzedakah honor and create the legacy of our members’ values, including education, inclusion, innovation, leadership, brick and mortar needs, and scholarship support. As a result, we have a vibrant, spiritual and caring community that we can all be proud of. B’lev shalem, I wish you a happy, healthy and meaningful New Year.

I got involved with the L’Chaim Campaign because I know it supports the very important programs and services that Adath has to offer. As a lifelong member of Adath, I have been touched by many of these, including as a student at the Gan Shelanu Preschool, my Bar Mitzvah at the synagogue on Dupont in 1968, and the Auf Ruf for my marriage in 1986. Two of our children were students at the Gan and all three had their Bar or Bat Mitzvah here at Adath. More recently, our eldest daughter had her wedding ceremony in the Sanctuary here on Hillside Lane. When going through the 11 month mourning period for both of my in-laws, it was very comforting to know there would always be a minyan present to comfort our family. When our son was in high school and struggling for direction, he reached out to then Assistant Rabbi Aaron Brusso. From a year of meeting with the rabbi, our son came to realize that his calling in life was to become a spiritual leader just like Rabbi Brusso. I am happy to say that he has just completed his third year of seminary and will be ordained a Conservative Rabbi in another three years. The lives of my family and myself have been far richer for the programs, clergy and staff that are funded by your gifts to the L’Chaim Campaign. I was proud to call on behalf of L’Chaim in 2017 and am honored to be your Campaign Chair for 2018. Thank you for your donation to the L’Chaim Campaign, to enrich your family and your lives, and our entire Adath community.
Howard Y. Held

In Recognition of Directed Giving Your participation in the Annual L’Chaim Campaign provides essential funding to every part of our
Adath community. L’Chaim is the single most important gift you can make, but directed gifts go even further to strengthen the areas of our community that are most important to you.
Above and beyond your participation in L’Chaim, donating to a specific area of our Adath community can be a meaningful and rewarding gift. Thank you to everyone who supported our community this past year with your directed gifts. These examples are just a few of the ways you have built our community in 5778.
The times, they are a-changin’. The rising cost of raising a family has steadily increased the need for Gan Shelanu Preschool to provide scholarships for students beginning their Jewish education. Ten years ago, less than $2,000 was earmarked for preschool scholarships. During the past school year, more than $15,000 was awarded thanks in large part to the generosity of donors who have directed gifts to the Gan Fund. No child is ever turned away from the Gan because of inability to pay. The early years have extraordinary impacts on these students and their families, and your directed gifts to the Gan Fund ensure every student and every family has the same opportunity as the generations that came before.
There is nothing like Adath USY’s Chapter Membership Retreat. This immersive weekend away is a uniquely transformative experience for the teens of our USY chapter, including teen-led Shabbat, social action awareness, Israel connection components, and social programs. USYers deepen their commitment to the culture & traditions of Judaism, and to each other. Mazel Tov for winning Emtza Region of the Year 2018! USY member dues and synagogue support make possible a wide array of programs, but this special retreat requires additional outside funding. It is the premier engagement program for our chapter, made possible thanks to directed gifts to Adath’s USY Fund. These directed gifts heavily subsidize the retreat, making it possible for every member of our award-winning USY Chapter to attend—regardless of their ability to pay.
The Adath Congregational Nurse Program functions as a part of the Adath’s Outreach Caring Community: Yad Sima Tova, and has become an essential asset to our community. Elaine Savick, our Congregational Nurse, is a compassionate, caring, and kind person who knows how to approach our members. She acts as an extension of the clergy in their pastoral duties, and helps to find those who need spiritual support as well as physical attention. An anonymous Adath member expressed immense gratitude for the support Elaine provided to his family when he had to inform his mother by phone about the passing of her brother. He said "Elaine is a Godsend." This powerful program has been underwritten in the past, but is now made possible through the generosity of many donors who make directed gifts to the Congregational Nurse Program Fund.

Lev Shalem is the epitome of Adath. To me this means the knowledge, passion, and dedication that every person at Adath brings to the synagogue. From the clergy to the staff and lay leaders, their dedication to the Adath community is evident every day. From the day we joined Adath in 2003 and Rabbi Kravitz met with us to help us choose a Hebrew name for our oldest daughter; to Janice and the Gan staff who introduced us to our closest friends; to Risa, Jim Sherman and Hazzan Dulkin who prepared Madelyn and Ivy and helped us through every aspect of their b’not mitzvah; to the clergy and Adath board president’s dedication to Talmud Torah through their participation at school events and the Talmud Torah board; we have felt fully supported in every step of our journey to raising a Jewish family.

Adath's Gan Shelanu Preschool provides the most loving beginning for our Jewish children, and helps kids put Jewish values into action from the start. Last year, the Gan Shelanu children sang songs to seniors at Sholom West, delivered apples and honey to homebound congregants at the High Holidays, collected pajamas for children in the oncology units at local hospitals, collected food for an area food shelf, bought stuffed animals for the “Hug an Animal” program at Hennepin County Medical Center, held a book drive for kids from low-income families, and so much more. As a Gan Shelanu mom of 8 years (with Gan graduates—Ethan class of 2015 and Stella class of 2018), my husband and I have always appreciated these special opportunities the Gan provides to teach Tikkun Olam and to make the learning meaningful and hands-on. A favorite memory we will cherish are the times we decorated paper bags and delivered mischloach manot treats for Purim to homebound congregants in our neighborhood in Linden Hills. These tzedakah projects are so wonderful, setting
our children on a path of caring for one another and acting with good deeds. Thank you, Gan Shelanu!
