2017 Annual Report

Giving Back Independence

OUR MISSIONOTR is dedicated to increasing

the quality of life for individuals with physical

disabilities through the creation of affordable, accessible, barrier-free

housing solutions and person- centered services that

encourage independent living.

On the cover: This year’s report highlights four of our newest OTR residents. Read ahead to find out how the newly opened Midtown Crossing Apartments in Des Plaines is transforming their lives by giving them back their independence.

Dear OTR Friends,

Last year could be characterized in three words: growing, returning, and strengthening.

We’re growing with the opening in late fall of our 11th and newest apartment community, Midtown Crossing Apartments, in Des Plaines, welcoming 33 new residents to the OTR family. Inside this year’s annual report, we shine a spotlight on a quartet of those OTR residents who relish their new found independence since moving into Midtown Crossing.

In 2018, we’re casting a wider net into DuPage County, as we begin construction on a new apartment community in Lombard this spring. In addition, we have partnered on a project with Full Circle Communities in McHenry County, and we are exploring other new opportunities in DuPage County.

We’re returning home because OTR’s roots go back to Des Plaines. In 1974, a small group of devoted parents opened a thrift shop on Oakton Street to raise funds and began to conceive of a better and more independent future for their children with severe physical disabilities.

As we embark on our 12th and 13th apartment communities and serve over 300 individuals with physical disabilities, our founders can take pride in how their dreams have flourished over the past 44 years.

Finally, we’re strengthening our impact. The remarkable generosity of a wonderful donor served as the foundation for a new fund: the Over The Rainbow LIFE Fund. LIFE stands for Living Independently Feeling Empowered. The Fund will help to sustain and expand our Resident Service Program in the future, ensuring we can meet residents’ needs to help them maintain their independence, harness new resources, and find dignity in their ability to direct their own lives.

On behalf of the OTR Board of Directors, we want to express our tremendous gratitude to you and all of our supporters for being pivotal to our success this past year. You are an essential partner in our work, and we look forward to many more accomplishments together in 2018.

“ One of the things I recall when I looked at this apartment at Midtown Crossing is going into the bathroom and admiring myself for 10 minutes. It was because I was able to actually see myself in the mirror while I am in my wheelchair,” says Julianne Peronti, who was born with spina bifida and at 25 is now living in her own place for the first time. Her family joked that now she can host Thanksgiving dinner, to which she replied, “Hold on.”

“ I had a nice apartment in Chicago,” says Edwin Rivera. “It was a studio, but the problem was that the rent kept going up every year. It wasn’t affordable for me. I couldn’t do it.” A proud grandfather of eight, Edwin, who has both a heart condition and Meniere’s disease which causes episodes of vertigo, relishes the warm community he’s found at Midtown Crossing. “When you are around people who care, you enjoy going home and seeing the same people again. I feel like I’m home.”

“ I was residing in an assisted living facility in Bensenville. It was a decent place, but I didn’t belong there,” explains Bob Brixius. “My sister showed me the ad for Midtown Crossing in the newspaper. Independent living – no barriers – perfect.” He used to work at a bakery, but his scoliosis eventually caught up with him to the point when one day he could no longer stand up on his own. “Now, I can turn my wheelchair easily in the kitchen and bathroom. It makes a huge difference.”

Our Resident Service Program is designed to help residents maintain their independence to the greatest degree possible. The resident service coordinators work individually with each resident, linking them to existing resources in the community and encouraging them to engage in the community and OTR enrichment programming for an increased quality of life. Every year our menu of activities and partnerships continues to grow, offering everything from art classes, sign language instruction, and wheelchair volley ball to adaptive yoga, healthy cooking programs, and an elementary school partnership.

“Living at Midtown makes me feel like I’m getting my life back to be independent. The main thing I enjoy is my independence,” says Midtown resident Debra Bailey, who chats in the lobby with Alex Matthews, Midtown Crossing’s service coordinator.

On September 17, 2017, OTR held its 10th

Annual OTR Challenge Tour as part of the

Evanston Bike Club’s North Shore Century.

Over 100 riders came out to pedal with us

along the scenic North Shore.

This year’s Challenge brought in a

record setting $154,000, with proceeds

benefitting our Resident Service

Program. Tremendous thanks to OTR

Board members and Challenge co-chairs

Tiffiny Higgins and Sami Rahman. Mark

your calendars now for the 11th OTR

Challenge on September 16, 2018 and

join us for a fun day for a good cause.

This year’s 28th Celebration stage

featured Brian d’Arcy James, a three-

time Tony award winner who originated

the role on Broadway of King George in

Hamilton. His stellar repertoire, ranging

from classic Broadway show tunes to Billy

Joel hits, delighted nearly 400 guests

attending our major fundraiser of the

year at Northwestern’s Galvin Recital Hall

in Evanston. This year’s Celebration

Concert raised over $539,000, which will

help support OTR’s mission.

Now in its fifth year, Gallery OTR highlights the work of talented local artists and

gives back to the community. We partner with the artists to provide them exposure

and gallery space to sell their work at a monthly opening reception held at our Hill

Arboretum Apartments in Evanston. This year, the Gallery hosted 9 openings for

20 artists, as well as a special reception for 10 of our very own OTR resident artists.

While last spring, we applauded a hardy group

of supporters who braved snowy conditions to

join us at Lagunitas Brewing Company for a casual

fundraiser, plans are gearing up for this year’s

exciting kick off fundraising event:

OTR’s First Annual No Limits Music Fest.

The event will take place on April 7, 2018 at

Logan Square Auditorium, with headliner band,

Cherry Glazerr.

Mark your calendars and visit

information and all the details.

Expanding Our Reach with 13 Apartment Communities

On November 9, 2017, OTR hosted a jam-packed

grand opening to welcome the newest member of the

OTR family: Midtown Crossing Apartments. This

attractive 33-unit apartment community in downtown

Des Plaines is now fully occupied and gives these

residents with mobility impairments maximum

accessibility through barrier-free design. Inside the

building, artist Peggy Macnamara’s colorful artwork

enlivens each floor. Midtown residents enjoy the

convenience of a library/computer area, laundry, and

a community room, as well as a central location just a

few blocks away from the Metra commuter station, the

public library, shopping, and restaurants.
