Giving Garden at Hazel Heights P-Patch

An Introduction to Growing & Giving

What Lettuce Link and the Seattle Giving Gardeners Network call Growing and Giving encompasses the diverse ways gardeners across the city share the bounty of their gardens with their communities. Giving Gardeners range from backyard gardeners growing extra for the Food Bank, to large volunteer-run programs at P-Patches. Examples of Growing and Giving include:

• 53 P-Patches grow produce in a plot dedicated to growing for donation to a local food bank or emergency meal program

• 6 Community and Backyard Gardens grow produce dedicated to local food banks, meal programs, and low-income community members.

Lettuce Link’s role in Growing & Giving

Materials

Lettuce Link provides seeds to Giving Gardens, provides gardening materials and information, and signs for gardens.

Technical and Recruitment Support

Lettuce Link offers resources, ideas, and connections to other gardeners for Giving Gardens that are struggling to get people involved, have specific gardening challenges, or are just starting out.

Reporting and Celebration

Lettuce Link collects the poundage totals and stories from Giving Gardens at the end of the season and presents a picture of Giving Gardening for the year. It also co-hosts Giving Gardener Gatherings annually.

Giving Garden Stories

Hillman City P-Patch: “This year we had an extra plot adjacent to ours, as normally we are just a 10x

20' plot. We had a great season, increasing our yield and starting delivery early.

Our first gifting was in June and we ended in late Sept. We had many events,

including hosting RVFB staff at our harvest potluck. We continue to develop a

relationship and are trying to meet the needs of RVFB clients.”

Giving Garden Stories

Bitter Lake P-Patch:

“This year, we reached out to our immediate neighbors in the TriCourt

apartments, a SHA property directly across the street from Bitter Lake P-Patch.

Most, if not all, of the residents are regular food bank clients, so we thought we

could make some of their food hyperlocal. We met with their Resident Council,

who suggested we schedule our sharing days for late in the month when resources

are stretched way too thin. Some of our gardeners live in the building, and were

instrumental in getting flyers posted throughout the buildings. We had a sharing

day in July, and again in August. It was so much fun to connect directly with

everyone who came. We all talked about how we like to prepare our vegetables,

and everyone was just delightful, and so appreciative. In 2016, we plan to do this

a lot more often.”
