Volume 8, Issue 10 “CALL PROCESS UPDATE” Dear Friends, I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our search for second pastor. It’s hard to believe that we have now been without a second pastor for five months. We certainly benefited from having Pastor David Klepper with us during July, August and part of September in an interim position. Many of you have spoken fondly of his contacts and visits with you. His ministry among us was a great help as we began the search process for another pastor. I want to let you know that progress is being made. The Ministry Site Profile (MSP) has been prepared and approved by the Bishop. That means information about our congregation can now be shared with prospective candidates. Even though Our new bishop, Kevin Strickland, and his staff have only been officially in their new roles since September 1 st , they have been quite responsive to our questions and needs. A Call Committee has also been appointed by the Congregation Council. The Call Committee Members are Wayne Petersen (Chair) (8:30 am service); Kathy Behling (Council President) (8:30 am service); Chris Dahlman (9:30 am service); Jessica Hackathorne (8:30 am service). Danielle Nichols (9:30 am service); Dennis Luker (11:00 am service); Harold Humphries (11:00 am service) will serve as the alternate member. The Call Committee has received its materials and held its organizational meeting. We would anticipate beginning to receive names of potential candidates from the Synod in the coming weeks. Once names have been received, I will do an initial interview with those candidates that seem viable. My primary purpose will be to screen candidates for compatibility in working with me as well as their philosophy and approach to ministry. I will then pass on those names that seem “good matches” to our Call Committee who will pick up the process from there. They will do their own interview of the candidates. The Call Committee must be unanimous in any name they present to Congregation Council. The candidate approved by the Call Committee will then meet with the Congregation Council. Once the Congregation Council gives the approval for the candidate, a congregational meeting will be held and a vote taken by the entire congregation. The candidate must receive a 2/3’s vote to be called as a pastor to this congregation. During this time that we have been short a second pastor many of you have stepped forward in many a various ways to help fill the gaps. I thank you for your willingness to serve as we await the person God has called to be among us as our second pastor. “CALL PROCESS UPDATE” Dear Friends,

I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our search for second pastor.

Even though Our new bishop, Kevin Strickland, and his staff have only been officially in their new roles since September 1st, they have been quite responsive to our questions and needs.

“Pastor, St. Paul, claimed to be an apostle of Jesus, yet he was not one of the twelve disciples, so what does he mean?”

We need to remember that the word “disciple” basically means to be a follower or a student of someone, while the word “apostle” means someone who has received a special commission to go forth toward specific action and purpose.

So, in Ephesians 1:1-ff, Paul reminds those that hear his letter to the Ephesians, that he is an apostle who has been commissioned by Jesus Christ to bring the Gospel to as many people as will receive it. Paul wasn’t a travelling preacher simply because he personally wanted to do this. No, he was sent by Jesus Christ to do this. And in the Greek language of this text, Paul uses the word translated as “apostle’' to describe how he has been sent. Paul means that he has a mission, and his mission is serving Christ within the world that he lives in, generally the world of the Roman Empire.

Paul reminds us, and those who hear his words, that he believes that any power that he possessed was clearly a delegated power. And Paul reminds everyone that he was an apostle “through the will of God”. When Paul says this he is not speaking with a voice of pride, but with the voice of utter amazement. Throughout his ministry Paul remains amazed that God could have chosen someone like himself to serve Christ Jesus and to do His work.

What does all this say to us? It should remind us that we also are both disciple and Apostle to the faith of Jesus Christ. We remain students of God’s will and purpose for spreading the Gospel, even as we serve God as His Apostles who were ordained and commissioned through our baptism.

~ Through the Love of Christ ~

We are an exciting, welcoming, and growing community of

Christians sharing in God’s love with one another, the

Chattanooga area, & the world.

To: Follower of Jesus at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hixson, TN

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I [experienced] your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my [brothers and sisters].

These words from the opening of Paul’s letter to Philemon, the letter that formed the foundation of my last sermon with you on September 8, ring true for my 2 month experience at Trinity in Hixson. That brief time with you has made a wonderful and significant impact on me and, I think, on you as well. Not only was that time a positive experience in the shadow of my wife’s death (12/23/2018), but it added to healing from that loss as I spent time with family (Sue, Stan, and David) and with you, my new family in Christ. I treasure the many new friendships we have made in these months I have been with you at Trinity.

So, thank you for the Christian love and fellowship bestowed on me from July through the beginning of September 2019.

Yours in Christ Jesus, our Lord, Dave Klepper
