BACkgROUND

This focus area proposes that appropriately managed grasslands can provide large natural resource benefits in the form of carbon sequestration, provision of water services, and biodiversity protection. These actions can also assist with adaptation to climate change, raise productivity and enhance livelihoods.

During this workshop, a range of technical interventions, and policy and institutional options for fostering these improvements will be considered. In particular, the potential for carbon finance and other forms of payment for environmental services (PES) to partially or completely finance grassland restoration investments, will be explored.

the objective of the workshop is to identify practical steps to prepare an initial Action programme considering the needs & questions outlined below:

> Identify & address key knowledge gaps:

- Where is grassland degradation & associated losses of environmental assets & services most acute?

- Where, given various constraints, is restoring value to grasslands most feasible?

- Which policy instruments are best suited to large scale grassland restoration?

> What role can climate finance & other PES schemes play in supporting large-scale grassland restoration?

> How could the gAA be best positioned to add value to ongoing & past activities?

> Who else needs to get on board?

> How can each stakeholder engage in an initial Action programme?
