Course Objective

• To appreciate & understand the dynamics of intra & inter cultural aspects of orgs

• To create awareness about the inter-cultural paradigms for the post modern mgrs/ leaders

• To develop competencies for managing HR in culturally diverse contexts

• To manage & build new OC to deal effectively with cross-cultural issues

What GHRM/CCM is about

• GHRM is not just another mgt function, on a par with mkt, finance, operation or personnel, but is far deeper & wider, affecting potentially every aspects of business

• How cultural norms & values influence the attitudes & beh of indiv at work & hence how the various functions need to be ‘managed’ in difft cultures

• Aim is not so much to turn u into expatriate mgr, but to give u the awareness & skills to deal with cultural differences wherever & whenever they occur

Course Project• The course project will be group project.• Class members will form project groups of three

students. If possible, each project group should have a mix of members from difft cultural backgrounds so that group will be heterogeneous as far as possible.

• Once groups have been formed, the instructor should be consulted for the choice of the topic. (However students are encouraged to propose their own topics)

• When topics have been chosen, each group should meet the instructor individually to discuss their plans for the project.

Potential topics for the course project

• The project group selects a culture (country) for investigation. Care should be taken to first understand the culture by itself, without being concerned about its impact on mgt.

• Once this has been done, an investigation of mgt practices in the culture being studied, should be carried out.

• The group will then produce a written report giving an overview of the political & economic situation of the country studied and documenting the artifacts of the culture, its traditions, & its norms & values, & indicating how societal culture helps to explain the business traditions & practices within the culture ( country) being studied.

Potential topics for the course project

• Project duplication in the class should be avoided.

• The project should describe in depth the issue being studied, the history preceding it, the cultural aspects which influence it & the culture/ s involved.

• The report should educate the reader/ listener about the issue or phenomenon which has being studied & about the cultures involved.

• This having been done, a cultural analysis should be carried out which explains why the event/ s are happening as they are.

Potential topics for the course project

• Potential topics might include

- A description of cross cultural HRM issues of Indian MNC post acquisition

- A case study of cultural problems in a foreign subsidiary of a MNC, or

INTEGRATIVE TERM ASSIGNMENT

• This assignment requires research, imagination, and logic in applying the content of this course.

• The same groups students, create an imaginary company that you have been operating in the domestic arena for some time. Your group represents top management, and you have decided it is time to go international.

INTEGRATIVE TERM ASSINMENT

• Describe your company and its operations, relative size, and so forth. Give reasons for your decision to go international.

• Decide on an appropriate country in which to operate, and give your rationale for this choice.

• State your planned entry strategy, and give your reasons for this strategy.

INTEGRATIVE TERM ASSIGNMENT

• Describe the environment in which you will operate and the critical operational factors that you must consider and how they will affect your company.

• Give a cultural profile of the local area in which you will be operating. What are the workers going to be like? What kind of reception do you anticipate from local governments, suppliers, distributors, and so on?

• Draw up an organization chart showing the company and its overseas operations, and describe why you have chosen this structure.

• Decide on the staffing policy you will use for top level managers, and give your rationale for this policy.

• Describe the kinds of leadership and motivational systems you think would be most effective in this culture/environment. Give your rationale.

INTEGRATIVE TERM ASSIGNMENT

• Discuss the kinds of communication problems your managers might face in the host-country working environment. How should they prepare for a deal with them?

• Explain any special control issues that concern you for this overseas operation. How do you plan to deal with them?

• Identify the concerns of the host country and the local community regarding your operations there. What plans do you have to deal with their concerns and to ensure a long term cooperative relationship?

Components of the Course Project

• Written Report – A written report will be due from each group on both course project as well as on integrative assignment. On average, the report should be at least about 25 to 30 pages in length, plus appendices.

• In – Class Presentation – An oral presentation will be made in the class. The purpose of the presentation should be to inform the class members of your findings & conclusions.
