E-WASTE

The nation now dumps between 300 million and 400 million electronicitems per year, and less than 20% of that e-waste is recycled.

As computer processing power doubles roughly every two years, many old computers are being abandoned. Only 15% recycle theircomputers, which means the other 85% end up in landfills.

E-waste represents 2% of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70%of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronicsalone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys.

Its energy efficient to rebuild old computers, but only about 2% of PCs ever find their way to a second user.

About 50 millions cell phones are replaced worldwide a month, andonly 10% are recycled. If we recycled just a million cell phones, itwould reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year.

E-WASTE Flat panel computer monitors and notebooks often contain

small amounts of mercury in the bulbs used to light them. Large amounts of e-waste have been sent to countries such as

China, India and Kenya, where lower environmental standards

and working conditions make processing e-waste more

profitable. Around 80 % of the e-waste in the U.S. is exported to

Asia.

Electronic items that are considered to be hazardous include,

but are not limited to: Televisions and computer monitors that

contain cathode ray tubes

± LCD desktop monitors

± Laptop computers with LCD displays

± LCD televisions

± Plasma televisions

± Portable DVD players with LCD screens.

Every day you have the opportunity to make greener

choices, but when choosing technology, you dont want to

compromise on cost, performance or reliability. At Dell, we

believe you shouldnt have to. That's why we strive to

ensure that people and companies dont have to make

trade-offs to be green.

We make the better way a reality by delivering practicalproducts and services that make an impact on real

environmental issues, because at the heart of green is the

powerful idea that better ways are possible. Better ways to

use time, money and resources. Better ways to live, workand succeed in our world.

elimination of approximately 20 million pounds (10,000 tons) of packaging material from 2008 through 2012.

Packing is based on Three Cs:

± Cube How big is the box? Could it be smaller?

±

Content What is the packaging made of? Could it be made of something better?

± Curb Is it easily recycled?

ECO ENGAGEMENT AND RECOGNITIONTechnology may be our business, but our green agenda is a

personal one. Dell is working to make a positive impact on

communities and ecosystems around the world.

They absorb greenhouse gas emissions, but they improve air quality, recycle

water, create shade, and provide food and homes for living things across the

planet. The simple act of planting trees helps sustain our communities and the

environment. Dell created the Plant a Tree program to make it easy for you to

offset the greenhouse gas emissions from your computer equipment and to

help build a healthier planet one tree and forest at a time

ECO ENGAGEMENT AND RECOGNITION

In celebration of Earth Day 2010, Dell created the Plant a Tree

For a Friend Facebook application to make it easy to help build a

healthier planet, one tree and forest at a time.

For every tree Facebook users dedicated to a friend, Dell made

a donation to The Conservation Fund, which is planting the trees on

behalf of those friends. In all, 43,000 trees were dedicated.

The Conservation Fund will plant trees at the Upper OuachitaNational Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. This refuge provides a superb

winter habitat for tens of thousands of ducks and geese. Its also home

to the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and the threatened

Louisiana black bear. Other wildlife species living at the Upper

Ouachita National Refuge include alligators, deer, turkeys, squirrels.
