Globalization of the U.S. Diet

History of U.S Restaurants - McDonald’s was founded in April 15,
1955
- Coke was founded in 1886, started in a wagon by Dr. John Pemberation.
- These companies started small, but grew very quickly
- As families were adopting a more on
- the go lifestyle.
Globalization Mcdonald’s first moved to China in 1990, bringing cheeseburgers, french fries, and coke to a healthy country.
Coca-Cola began open bottling plants in as early as the 1900s. Not only did they open plants in other countries they created great relationships with other companies like Mcdonald’s.
Chinese Diet The Chinese diet is very healthy, it consists of
Vegetables
Rice, noodles or dumplings
Small portions of meat and fish
Not too much dairy
Food is cooked fresh and enjoyed
With friends and family
The Hard Facts China is currently ranked #2 obese country.
23% of Chinese boys under age 20 are overweight or obese, while comparable figure for girls is 14%
The average waistline of Chinese urban males has gone from 63.5 cm in 1985 to 76.2 cm in 2012, growing by 20 percent over just 27 years
Still growing... Mcdonald’s makes an effort to combine their food with the culture they are in.
There are currently 2,200 restaurants in China and they plan on adding 1,300 more in the next five years.
Obesity
NAFTA AGREEMENT
-North America free trade Agreement Signed in 1994. -By 1999 the U.S. fast food industry had Invested 5.3 billion dollars into Mexico’s Food industry. -11 yrs. Later-2010- Mexico’s indigenous communities begin to develop diabetes, something that was never seen before. - By 2013 it was estimated that about 10 million of Mexicans suffered from DM, which kills about 70, 000 every year.
Obesity Rates in Mexico -Obesity “ the unintended consequence of NAFTA.” -In June 2013, Mexico became one of the most obese nation in the world, surpassing the U.S. by 1%. -According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, Mexico’s obesity rate-from 2013-is at 32.8% and U.S. at 31.8%. -Rise of obesity attributed to consumption of high sugar and fatty foods.
Mexico’s traditional food ingredients -Traditional Mexican food ingredients from Local small town or villages, have been known for their nutritional value. -Many of these foods consist of corn, beans, chilli peppers, tomatoes, seeds, fruits, vegetables and wild plants. -In smaller towns, it was a tradition to grow your own food with no preservatives and cooking was kept simple.
Food transition -Mexico becomes influenced by nutrient-deficient foods. -People begin consumption of these new foods, seemingly their modern packaging and advertising are key attractions. -The value of local grown vegetables, fruits, and grains declined due to the American comparators.
Nigeria -Ethnically diverse country
→ each region differs based on their traditions, religion, and customs -North: dry zone
→ mostly Muslims live here → mainly devoted to grains: → legumes, irrigated rice, rainfed
sorghum or millet, groundnuts -South: root crops and tubers
→ yams, cassava, maize, sorghum, millet, rice, beans, legumes -fruits are enjoyed all year round
→ oranges, melons, grapefruits, bananas, mangoes
Globalization of Fast Food in Nigeria - 21-40 year olds are the primary
consumers of fast food
- Quick service restaurants (fast food) provides availability at any time of the day and accommodates an easier lifestyle because of less food preparation
- Fast food restaurants:
- KFC, Johnny Rockets, Domino’s, future: Burger King, Hardee’s
- First American fast food chain was KFC in 2009
Globalization continued… - Domino’s, Johnny Rockets, Cold
Stone Creamery followed in 2012
- More wealth means that it’s more likely fast food will be consumed
- An emerging economy being targeted by International Food Industries
- McDonald’s showed interest in 2014
Prevalence of Overweight & Obesity - More wealth means a higher chance of being overweight or obese
- Two-thirds of adults with a high socio-economic status represent the prevalence of being overweight or obese
- Men see a more fully rounded women as attractive
- View: The bigger and well fed a woman, the more capable they are of taking care of the children
- Prevalence of being overweight ranged from 20.3%-35.1%
- Prevalence of obesity ranged from 8.1%-22.2%
Solutions/recommendations for meal manager -Promotion of nutrition education in schools to educate students on how they can access healthier foods and ways to prepare their own meals with what they have
- Taxing junk foods and using the revenue to make healthy foods less expensive.
-Funding can be biased and the money being given to agriculture should be revised. In many occasions this money only goes to the larger producer. - By targeting and eliminating junk food advertising. -By creating systems where local grown foods are connected to the nearby urban consumer.
