PRINCIPAL’S REPORTWelcome to 2021, the beginning of a new school year, with a special welcome to our Year 7 students and new students to Gloucester High School and our town. I would like to introduce to you, two new staff members: Mr Nathan Paff and Ms Tina White. Nathan is our school psychologist and will be available through the school referral system on Monday, Tuesday and Friday each week. Roziye (school counsellor) will still be available on Wednesday and Thursday each week, again through the school referral process. Tina is our P&C Canteen Manager and brings her knowledge and skills from her work in the food industry to our school. We are also in the process of seeking a mathematics teacher through the Department of Education’s employment process.

On behalf of the school I would like to congratulate Charles Tonks who was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year at the Gloucester Australia Day Awards ceremony. I would also like to thank our school captains for their address on the day and to the musical performers from Gloucester High School. Further information and pictures are in this edition.

Once again, we had very pleasing 2020 HSC results. Of the 28 students seeking an ATAR, our students achieved; 5 Band 6; 26 Band 5 and 37 Band 4 results. Congratulations to the following students who were named on the NESA HSC Distinguished List: Anneka Hooke for Drama, Visual Arts and Hospitality; Emily Dulihanty for Food Technology; and Kelsey Farley for Investigating Science. Our top four students were: Anneka Hooke; Holly Willis; Thomas Bandy and Charlotte Maslen. Thank you to the teachers who went above and beyond to support all our HSC students during the year and to the additional tutorials given after hours, at weekends and during the holidays. For such a small school, we provide our students with amazing opportunities for success.

We are still governed by COVID safe practices. On entering the school; parents, contractors and delivery people will need to present at the office. A QR code is on the front doors and delivery doors. Visitors are asked to sign in using this App before proceeding to the office, where they will need to sign the Department of Education form as well. Students have been reminded about COVID safe practices and expectations while at school.

The Department of Education has developed a COVID Intensive Learning Support Program to assist students who’s learning may have been impacted during COVID and who need additional support with their reading and/or numeracy. We are in the early stages of implementing this program as we need to identify students, investigate the best way to reach as many students as possible within the Department guidelines, how it will be integrated into the school day, who will manage the program and to determine what data will be used to monitor progress. I have included a letter outlining this program on the following page.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued...This year we had two, very intensive Staff Development Days at the beginning of the term. The following topics were covered: Update on COVID; Code of Conduct; Private and Secondary Employment; Conflict of Interest; Effective Complaint Handling; Procedure updates (Managing Bullying and Wellbeing, Mobile Phone, Working Alone, N Notifications, Roll Marking); Student Risk Assessments, Health Care Plans and Behaviour Management Plans; SENTRAL; Disability and Inclusion; Student Behaviour Strategy; Professional Learning for Staff; High Potential and Gifted Education; Literacy and Numeracy; student attendance; Work health and Safety and faculty planning and programming.

Year 7 are settling in very well. Even though our transition program was greatly modified due to COVID, the students are navigating the change of periods and successfully adapting to the high school environment.

Another well organised and managed swimming carnival took place on Wednesday. Thanks to Mr Cameron and staff who put a lot of time into the planning, setting up of shade and supervision throughout the day. We were most fortunate to have had pleasant weather and the students had an enjoyable time. There are photos of the day in this edition.

A reminder to parents that Gloucester High School is a uniform school that is endorsed by the P&C. Students are expected to wear school uniform and the correct shoes. Our P&C has a very well-run uniform shop where uniforms can be easily ordered and purchased through the canteen. A school uniform invokes belonging, acceptance and pride. It is important that students don’t feel different to their peers, hence the uniform is well priced and readily available. Please contact the school if you are having difficulty equipping your child with the correct uniform.

COVID INTENSIVE LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAM

Dear parents and carers

As we all know, 2020 has been a tough year.

This is particularly so for our students and teachers who have risen to the challenges in a disrupted year that included seven weeks of remote learning due to COVID-19, and in some areas, that came on top of bushfires and floods.

For our students, this has been an unsettling time.

The government and department have recognised this with the announcement of a $337 million program aimed at ensuring that schools can identify students who would benefit the most from intensive support. This will be tailored to their requirements to ensure that students’ educational outcomes continue to improve in 2021.

The COVID intensive learning support program will provide small group tuition for students who need it most across NSW primary, secondary and specialist schools.

All public schools across the state will benefit with an allocation to employ additional teachers and educators to support student learning.

Very shortly we will start planning for the implementation of small group tuition program in our school. The groups might be conducted during schools hours, after school or remotely and, maybe, a combination of all three. Although we will be focusing on literacy and numeracy, we are considering a number of subject areas.

We will keep you updated. In the meantime the department’s website has more information on this program.

Best Regards,

Mrs Trudi Edman, Principal

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONSOur school was proudly represented at the recent Australia day celebrations. School captains, Danielle Channon and Hayden Reid, gave an engaging speech on what being Australian means to them, well done Danielle and Hayden.

Congratulations also to our music students who performed at the ceremony. Charles Tonks, Caiden Wakefield, Chelsi Harrison, Kaleesha Aitken and Adelaide McIntosh performed the classic song I Am Australian to a very appreciative audience.

These students have given up time to prepare and were a credit to our school and our community.

Music teacher, Judy Ingram, would like to thank the students and congratulate them for the great effort that they gave to help celebrate our national day.

Year 10 student, Charles Tonks, received the honour of 2021 Young Citizen of the Year. Charles volunteers and contributes in multiple ways within our community, giving up his spare time to help out wherever he can and it was wonderful to see this acknowledged.

WELCOME TINA!We would like to welcome our new Canteen Manager, Mrs Tina White. Tina has been trialling some delicious new items in our canteen - keep an eye out for what’s available each day!

We have an updated 2021 Canteen Menu available on our website and also at the back of this newsletter.

- Volunteers Needed -We are in need of canteen volunteers.

This means a commitment of two or three hours, once or twice a term or less (if we get more volunteers).

No experience required just a friendly face.

This is an enormous, helpful contribution that you can make for the good of the school and its students. Please consider volunteering.

HUNTER SPORT TRIALSStudents who wish to trial for a Hunter sporting team in 2021 can find the specific trial information at https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/Hunter

The information is best accessed by clicking on “View Calendar” on the right hand side of the website and then clicking on the individual event ie. Hunter Secondary Volleyball Trial on the appropriate date.

Information can be accessed by clicking on the specific event on the calendar. Please note that each individual sports trial information is different. Also note that most Hunter teams are Open age and often the trials are limited to students Year 9 and above with the appropriate experience and ability.

If you would like to trial for a Hunter sporting team, please let Mr Cameron know and we can go through the information together to see if the trial is appropriate for you.

Qualification for Hunter Swimming, X-Country and Athletics remains via performances at the Manning Zone carnivals (with the exception of events not run at Zone and/or Hunter).

UNIFORM SHOPUniforms are selling quickly and some sizes we have ordered and waiting to arrive. This usually takes two weeks so please be patient if you have ordered.

Uniforms can be purchased at the canteen every day. If using eftpos, please fill in an order form (found on school website or at office) and give to the school office please.

Also we have a new bucket hat that will be available for students next week. Any suggestions towards a school cap would be appreciated too. We are aware of different styles students like and hope to bring a cap into our School Uniform Sun Safe Policy very soon. Please bring your suggestions to our next P&C meeting.

WELLBEING AT GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOL 2021 A warm welcome back to parents and students for the 2021 school year. A special welcome also to parents who are new to our school.

I welcome Year 7 as Year Head Teacher and I trust that all students have enjoyed their high school experience to date. I wish to thank Mr Adam Cameron, Year 7 Year Adviser, for his care and attention to detail in ensuring our Year 7 students made a smooth transition to High School.

Our first wellbeing initiative involves some ex-NRL players who are visiting under the Hogs for the Homeless banner. They are addressing the whole school about mental health and youth homelessness. This will take place in the quad on Monday 8 February.

We are very fortunate to have a collegial wellbeing team consisting of Year Advisers, School Counsellors, Girls Adviser and Boys Adviser to support the wellbeing needs of students.

The wellbeing program will continue at Gloucester High School in 2021.

All students in Years 7-10 will participate in a timetabled wellbeing lesson once per fortnight. Topics are based on the Be You domains of Mentally Healthy Communities, Learning Resilience, Responding Together and Early Support. Gloucester High School is a Be You school. Some of the other topics covered address aspects of the Wellbeing framework for schools with the understanding that all students can Connect, Succeed and Thrive in their learning.

Many of our older students give positive feedback about their experiences in wellbeing classes. They are grateful for the content and skills acquired which are designed to assist them in their transition into senior school and then adult life.

For further information about Be You please go to https://beyou.edu.au/

If you have any questions about the wellbeing program, please contact me at the school.

Ms Myree Ribbons, Head Teacher Wellbeing

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Year 10 is a very important year for a number of reasons. From a career point of view many significant decisions must be made, regardless of whether students are leaving after Year 10 or continuing to Year 12, in relation to a career path.

The Work Experience programme for 2021 will run from:

Monday 22 March to Thursday 1 April (Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 1).

This is 9 working / school days in total.

In order for insurance details to be completed, I will need to have all applications processed by the 15th of March. At this stage all students should have received Application Forms (Student Placement Record) and the Work Experience Handbook will be provided next week. These documents can be obtained from me if required. Students are encouraged to contact potential employers face to face or via phone or email, and have the Student Placement Record (SPR) signed by the employer. However, if there is difficulty doing this, I can post / email / fax them off to get employer signatures to complete the application process.

The Student Placement Record has a section to be completed by the student, a section for parents / carers, and a section for employers to complete. The employer section must have the name, address, and contact details so I will be able to touch base with them. Students may choose to have one placement with the same employer for the two week duration or two placements, one each week. This is something students will need to negotiate with host employers. Furthermore, regarding Work Experience and the pandemic, all employers will have to identify on the SPR that they have a COVID-19 Safety Plan in the work place before students can commit to the placement.

Students that wish to work on a building site with any tradesman for Work Experience must have completed the WH&S White Card Course before commencing their placement. We will be delivering a White Card Course, conducted by Mr Chris Murray, on Wednesday 10 March. The cost will be $50 (very cheap in comparison to other RTO’s).

Any parents who would like to speak with me about any concerns / issues or to discuss student placements should contact me at the school.

Mr Michael De Angelis, Careers Adviser

MATHS CORNER QUESTION (for students and parents)

Question: In the rectangle at the right, line segment MN separates the rectangle into 2 sections. What is the largest number of sections into which the rectangle can be separated when 4 line segments are drawn through the rectangle?

* Maths corner questions have been provided courtesy of ‘Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) Inc’ an advanced problem solving course currently being undertaken by some of our Year 7 & 8 students.

Switch it up7 reasons to actively travel to and from school

Did you know that most students in NSW travel

to school by car even though they live less than

two kilometres from their school? Are you one

of them? If so, think about switching it up and

give it a go.

There’s many physical, social and mental

benefits to walk, cycle or use public transport to

travel to and from school.

Active travel:1. is a great opportunity to socialise with others

2. connects you with others in the community

3. gives you time and space to think

4. gets you moving and keeps you physically active

5. improves your concentration and readiness to learn

6. helps your independence and resilience

7. reduces traffic congestion around school which is better for the environment.
