Research and Education Network (NCREN). For a more than a quarter century, NCREN continues toprovide advanced Intranet and Internet connectivity to a constantly expanding number of Community AnchorInstitutions throughout North Carolina. Today's users of NCREN include all 17 institutions of the Universityof North Carolina System, all 58 North Carolina Community Colleges, all 115 K−12 public school districtsas well as a growing number of K−12 charter and private schools, the majority of the state's private collegesand universities, several non−profit and public health care facilities, and a number of the state's premierresearch institutions. About Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative

MCNC currently is working on a $144 million expansion of NCREN scheduled to be completed by 2013.This initiative has been labeled the Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative (GLRBI).

To fund this expansion, MCNC applied for and received two U.S. Department of Commerce BroadbandTechnology Opportunities Program (BTOP) awards totaling $104 million. In addition, MCNC raised $40million in private matching funds as required by the BTOP program. MCNC's sources of matching fundsincluded $24 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation,$8 million from the MCNC Endowment,$4 millionfrom private−sector wholesale telecommunications company FRC, and an estimated $4 million throughdonations of land and existing conduit from individual community colleges, universities, and others includingthe Albemarle Pamlico Economic Development Corporation. No direct funding from the State of NorthCarolina was required. MCNC estimates this project will create or save 2,500 engineering, construction, andmanufacturing jobs in the state.

Both MCNC awards are a part of a coordinated strategy developed by the Office of North Carolina GovernorBev Perdue, the N.C. Office of Economic Recovery & Investment, and e−NC Authority to improvebroadband access for businesses and residents in underserved areas. Once all work is complete, the tworounds of BTOP infrastructure have the potential to serve directly, or through MCNC partnerships withprivate−sector service providers, more than 1,500 community anchor institutions, 180,000 businesses, andreach more than 300,000 underserved families.

DURHAM, N.C. – Dr. Charles Hamner, the "biodad" of NorthCarolina's growing biotechnology industry, and Epic Games stolethe spotlight at WRAL Tech Wire's first "Full Steam Ahead Awards"

Thursday night.

Dr. Hamner, a driving force behind North Carolina's becoming the third largest biotech cluster in theU.S., received two honors - the only person to do so. ("Biodad" or "biofather" is The Skinny'snickname for Dr. Hamner. The late James Graham was North Carolina's "sodfather" in agriculture,so The Skinny came up with a nickname that Dr. Hamner told us he does enjoy.)

First, he received a lifetime achievement award.

Jane Smith Patterson, the longtime director of e-NC, former science advisor to Gov. Jim Hunt and atireless visionary who helped bring broadband access to North Carolina, also received theachievement award.

Later, Hamner received the "Yardmaster" honor for his visionaryleadership in the state as the long-time chief executive officer atthe N.C. Biotechnology Center, his continuing role as an advisor tostate and industry leaders, and also his efforts to expand TheHamner Institutes in RTP.

Epic Games, meanwhile, received two honors.

Dr. Michael Capps, Epic's president, and Tim Sweeney, thecompany's CEO, chairman and technical director, shared the "Engineer" award, which went to thetop CEO as nominated by a panel of independent judges from the Triangle's entrepreneurialcommunity.

Capps, Sweeney and their team have built Epic into one of the world's top video game companieswith its "Unreal," "Gears of War" and "Infinity Blade" franchises. Epic also has created a series ofvideogame engines, called Unreal, which is used across all major game platforms and bycompanies around the globe. Unreal also is being used for virtual reality training. Their Gearsfranchise alone has produced more than $1 billion in sales.

Epic's other award went to Cliff Bleszinski, who shared the "Inventor" award with Dr. JosephDeSimone, who teaches at both UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State when not discovering inventionsand launching new companies. Bleszinski is the creative director at Epic where his task is to inventand create new universes for game play.

An overflow crowd of more than 250 people packed the Fullsteam Breweryfor the event, which was a salute the best companies and technologyleadership North Carolina has to offer. We played off a train theme, thus the"Full Steam" name, and every award winner received an engineer's hat. Whyrailroads?

Well, they were America's original broadband.

Special Recognition

Because immigrants played such a key role in the building of thetranscontinental railroad, we chose to recognize to immigrants to America who became successfulentrepreneurs - true examples of living the American Dream.

“In accepting the award I thought of 75 hard-working people at MCNC who made this happen,” said MCNCPresident and CEO Joe Freddoso, who also was nominated individually in the Engineer Category and theYardmaster Category. “We are very proud of the entrepreneurial spirit that defines MCNC. And, we are proudto be building an infrastructure that will scale to help North Carolina meet its broadband needs of the future.”
