Nativity scenes help churchesbring their messages to life

By AL [email protected]

As the time drew near for themain happening at a Saturday “Si-lent Night Live” event at Hosanna!Lutheran Church in St. Charles, visitors crowded around the gymarea, where actors would soon per-form a live Nativity scene.

Children and adults in the au-dience cheered and clapped asperformers portrayed the birthof Jesus. It was the third year thechurch had staged such a livescene. Lynette Anderson, thechurch’s director of children andfamily ministry, said the hope is“that we could help the real mean-ing of Christmas come alive to thechildren and their families.”

Leaders at several local church-es said such scenes can drivehome that message. That can bedone with a live Nativity scene,in which performers portray thestory in a brief presentation. Also, some churches will employ a dis-play that might stay up throughoutthe Christmas season. For some, such a display won’t be completeuntil Christmas Eve, when babyJesus will arrive.

Anderson said this is the third

year Hosanna! has put togethera live Nativity performance atthe church, which is at 36W925Red Gate Road in St. Charles. St.Charles resident Marie Kowalskiparticipated in the Saturday event, playing an angel. Kowalski saidher family was eager to play a rolein the celebration, saying suchscenes can make viewers “feel likeyou were there.”

Performances have become anannual tradition at Geneva Lu-theran Church, which is at 301 S.Third St. in Geneva. The locationputs the church in a prime spot tobe a showcase in the city’s annualChristmas Walk. Julie Slifka, thechurch’s interim director of chil-dren, youth and family programs, said the church has been staginga live Nativity at the festival formore than 20 years. She said it hasbecome “not just a part of GenevaLutheran’s tradition but also Gene-va’s tradition.”

Slifka said middle school stu-dents at the church participatein the Nativity performance eachyear, and she said it’s a big dealfor them. There are three presen-tations with three different casts, she said.

“They look forward to be-ing eighth-graders becauseeighth-graders get the first choiceof the parts they play,” Slifkasaid. “Mary and Joseph are quitesought-after [roles].”

While she enthusiasticallyspoke of Geneva Lutheran’s liveNativity tradition, Slifka addedscenes that use figures and stayup throughout the Christmas sea-son are “absolutely essential tothe season. They are a constantreminder of the meaning of theseason.”

These scenes can be viewedthroughout the area this season. AtThe Holmstad, a life-sized Nativ-ity recently made its debut at thefacility’s annual Christmas openhouse event. A live Nativity wasperformed and the scene was puton display, and it can be viewedthrough early 2015. The Holmstadis at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway inBatavia.

At St. Katharine Drexel Catho-

lic Church, at 8S055 Dugan Roadin Sugar Grove, the Rev. BobJones said a Nativity outside ofthe church eventually will fill up.On Christmas Eve, Jesus will beadded, he said. He said there alsois a scene inside the church thatincludes a manger that will remainempty until Christmas Eve.

“They’re all reminders of thetrue meaning of Christmas,” hesaid. “We can get lost easily inall of the modern, more commer-cial notions of Christmas. Thisreminds people of where the dayactually came from – two words,Christ Mass … a special Mass forChrist.”

At Holy Cross Catholic Church,2300 Main St., Batavia, the Rev.James Parker said he anticipatesa Christmas Eve service in whichthe lights will be turned low andthen baby Jesus will be placed intohis manger in the Nativity scene. He is in his first year as pastor ofthe church, but he said he previ-ously was an associate pastor atHoly Cross and was familiar withthe tradition, with parents send-ing their kids to pray before babyJesus.

“This reminds us of God’s greatlove for us,” he said.

Primrose Farm shimmers with winter programsBy CAROL HAGGAS

[email protected]

Summer around a farm isjust a hive of activity. Thereare crops to sow and hay tomow. There are fences tomend and animals to tend. And while cold weather slowsthings down a bit, there isstill plenty to do around afarmstead during wintermonths.

Kids ages 7 to 12 can learnabout farm life firsthandthrough the Winter FarmCamp on Friday, Jan. 2, atPrimrose Farm as part ofthe no-school day roster ofprograms designed to providesafe, educational and enter-taining activities to occupykids while their parents areat work. From farm chores, such as feeding cows andgathering eggs, to playinggames similar to thoseenjoyed by families duringthe 1930s, the Winter FarmCamp is a daylong trip backin time.

“Our goal is to get kids en-gaged with history, let theminteract with the animalsand provide them with fungames and activities,” saidLaura Johns, educator andlead interpreter. “This willbe a unique way to spendpart of their Christmasbreak.”

For those participantswho are regular attendees

of the farm’s summer campprogram, Winter Camp willgive them the uncommonexperience of seeing whatgoes on at another time ofyear. For others who are first-time visitors, the day campprovides enough tantalizingglimpses of both the indoorand outdoor working aspectsof the farm to entice them tocome back during the summermonths.

“Kids who have never beento camp before will get to meet

the animals for the first timeand help with regular chores, such as letting the cows in andout of the barn and feedingall the livestock,” said Johns.”Kids love to connect with ouranimals.”

They also will get to makehot cocoa and cookies usingthe wood stove in the farm’ssummer kitchen and learnabout the types of householdtasks that farm families setaside specifically as winterchores – things such as mend-

ing garments and repairingharnesses.

“Equipment care and main-tenance [were] a big part ofwinter farm life in the 1930s,”said Johns.

If the weather cooperates, kids also can take a snowshoehike around the farm proper-ty, an activity they can repeatwith their family duringthree Sunset Snowshoe Hikesscheduled for the first Satur-day in January, February andMarch.

These snowshoe hikes aresuitable for all ages, for bothaccomplished and novicesnowshoers alike. Partici-pants hike down the farm’slane to Ferson Creek, wherethey can observe nativeplants along fence rows, spotbird-nesting sites in treesand check out critter activityalong the creek bed.

“Not only is it goodexercise, but hiking onsnowshoes gets you to placesyou wouldn’t be able to go to

otherwise,” said Johns. The 90-minute hikes depart

from the farm’s summerkitchen in late afternoon, heading out just as the sunis setting and returning towarming treats of cocoaand cookies as the moon isrising. “It’s magical as youmake your way down to thecreek,” said Johns. “The sunsets right over the creek andeverything is glowing andsparkling. It’s really beauti-ful.”

Another less-strenuousway of experiencing thefarm’s wintertime beautyis to take part in the farm’sHoliday Sleigh Rides. Thesetractor-drawn bobsled ridestraverse the fields and trailsof the farm Friday, Dec. 26,and Saturday, Dec. 27, andagain Friday, Jan. 2, andSaturday, Jan. 3. At the tour’send, guests return to thefarm’s summer kitchen wherethey can warm up by thewarmth of the wood stove, sipsome hot cocoa and listen to1930s-era holiday music.

Those interested in theSunset Snowshoe Hikes andHoliday Sleigh Rides pro-grams are asked to registerin advance so Primrose Farmstaff can contact them in caseof inclement weather.

For additional informationon the farm’s winter pro-grams, call Johns at 630-513-4374.

In an effort to isolate the causes of eye strain, which is one of several major symptoms of “dryeye” disease, researchers analyzed the tear fluidof office workers who spend long periods of timepeering at computer screens. They found thatthose who spent the most time looking at theirmonitors had the least amount of the protein(known as MUC5AC) that is secreted by cells inthe upper eyelid to create the mucus layer in tears(“tear film”) that keeps the eye moist. In fact, the workers who spent the most time watchingtheir computer screens had MUC5AC levelsthat approached the levels seen with individualsdiagnosed with dry eye. Treatment with artificialtears can help.

P.S. Because they tend to blink less often thanusual and open their eyes wider, people in front ofcomputer screens are likely to be more susceptibleto ocular fatigue and dry eye symptoms.

Two resign from GenevaPublic Library Board

By BRENDA [email protected]

GENEVA – Geneva PublicLibrary trustees Dec. 18 not-ed the resignation of theirlongtime boardpresident, Es-ther Steel, asofficials saidshe moved outof the district, and also theresignation ofSusan Shivers, who was elected to the boardin 2011.

The new board president,Robert Shiffler, said Shiversresigned by email.

Steel, who had been on theboard for 12 years, had beenpresident for 10 years.

“We really are going to missher passion and enthusiasmand leadership,” Shiffler said.“Her passion for the library isvery obvious.”

For years, Steel had beena leading force in trying toget a new, larger site for thelibrary while still keeping itin Geneva’s downtown. Forthree years, library officialsconsidered buying the Cetron

property at 7 Richards St. for$2 million then terminated apurchase contract in Septem-ber 2013 because of an environ-mental review.

In January this year, a pos-sible purchase of the formerSixth Street School came upwhen Kane County officialssaid they would put it on themarket.

The library has the right offirst refusal.

Steel also presided overleadership issues at the li-brary, when former directorMatt Teske resigned in Janu-ary then was reappointed asassistant director.

Teske’s resignation letterrevealed he was strugglingwith depression and anxiety.

But then Teske resignedagain in April and the boardhired Christine Lazaris as li-brary director in May.

RISING ABOVE THE REST

By ERIC [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – In choosinga name for their first restau-rant, Hampshire couple Nathanand Amanda Drafall tried tocome up with something thatreflected the excellent food andservice the establishment aimsto provide.

Top Table restaurant openedin September at 1 W. IllinoisAve., Suite 170, St. Charles, inthe Fox Island Square center.Bistro One West, which closedin November 2012, formerlyoccupied the space.

“It is something that risesabove – the best of the best,”Amanda Drafall said of therestaurant’s name.

The couple runs the restau-rant along with Amanda Dra-fall’s mother-in-law, CynthiaDrafall. For the couple, openingthe restaurant truly is a dreamcome true.

“We dated in high school, and he used to wine and dineme and take me out to reallynice restaurants when we wereyounger,” Amanda Drafallsaid. “He would always say,‘Wouldn’t it be funny if whenwe were older one day we couldown a restaurant. And here weare.’”

They spent a lot of timerenovating the space to make ittheir own, including installingbooths to provide additionalprivacy.

“We added our own personaltouch to it to give it the warmthand feeling that we would wantif we went to a restaurant, if myhusband was taking me out todinner,” she said.

Top Table serves such fare assteaks, seafood, chops, burgersand ribs. In planning the restau-rant’s menu, the couple thoughtabout the items they would liketo see if they were going out fora night on the town.

That includes baked frenchonion soup, which is one of thesoups featured on Top Table’smenu.

“Before Top Table opened,we went to every other restau-rant to try and find out whohad the best one,” AmandaDrafall said. “My husband isa big meat-and-potatoes guy. Ilove fish, and I really love pastadishes. We don’t offer too manypastas, but there is a chickenziti dish that the chef makesthat is outstanding.”

The restaurant’s execu-tive chef, Josef Yurisich, is afamiliar face in the area as hepreviously worked at PheasantRun Resort in St. Charles foralmost 23 years.

“He was used to running andmanaging four kitchens at thesame time and not just one,”Amanda Drafall said. “He defi-nitely has the experience. Hispresentation and passion aloneare outstanding. We are verythankful every day that he ishere, because of the magnificentdishes that he creates.”

Top Table is open for dinnerand recently started servinglunches. In the new year, TopTable will be serving lunch onWednesdays, Thursdays andFridays, Amanda Drafall said.

The restaurant’s most popu-lar items include such dishes asa crowned filet, Mediterraneanmahi-mahi, chicken ziti and adry aged Tomahawk steak.

“People who appreciate goodsteaks, they said they reallydo appreciate our restaurant,”Amanda Drafall said. “They ap-preciate what we have broughtto the table.”

Her favorite item on themenu is Amanda’s slow roastedprime rib.

“It has nothing to do withit being named after me,” shesaid. “I love it because I justlove how tender the meat is andthe flavor.”

All of the food is prepared in-house, she said. For some of itsdesserts, Top Table works with

Kimmer’s Ice Cream, whichalso is located in the Fox IslandSquare center.

“That’s probably the onlything we don’t make in-house,”Amanda Drafall said. “Every-thing else the chef makes fromscratch.”

The word is starting to getout about Top Table, and therestaurant has been seeingrepeat customers.

“It’s all by word-of-mouth,”Amanda Drafall said. “We havequite a few repeat customers, which is nice and heartfelt.”

Top Table will ring in thenew year with a New Year’sEve party that will feature liveentertainment. For the conve-nience of its customers, www.opentable.com takes all of TopTable’s reservations.

Information about Top Tableis available by going to its web-site, toptablestc.com, or callingthe restaurant at 630-945-3740.Top Table also is available forprivate parties.

‘Modern Family’ producer buys film rights to local author’s book, ‘Real Santa’By KARA SILVA

[email protected]

On the cover of author Wil-liam Hazelgrove’s latest novel,“Real Santa,” a starred reviewby Booklist states, “If somebodydoesn’t make a movie out of thisbook, there’s something wrongwith the world.”

Well, someone has decidedto do just that.

“Modern Family” pro-ducer Vicki Rocco recentlybought the film rights to “RealSanta” for her productioncompany – Small But MightyProductions – with an eye for afeature or made-for-televisionmovie. This news comes on theback of Hazelgrove’s summerannouncement that he sold therights to his fifth book, “ThePitcher,” to producer Ed Bates, who currently is adapting thescreenplay.

Kane County ChronicleFeatures Editor Kara Silvagot to chat with the CamptonHills resident about his recentsuccesses and living the literarydream.

Kara Silva: Can you brieflyexplainwhat “Real Santa” is allabout?

William Hazelgrove: It allstarted when my daughterstarted to doubt Santa Claus. We live in this sort of Victorianfarmhouse. [It has] three chim-neys … and kind of a flat roof. I[was] looking out the window, thinking about Santa, andthen I’m like, “You know, youcould land reindeer on the roof, and going down the chimneywouldn’t be that hard.” What ifthere was this crazy mechani-cal engineer, and he decides todo it; to do the physics of it – tobe the real Santa. How wouldyou do it?

So, I started researchingand trying to figure out how toput reindeer on the roof; howto actually create the illusionof flying, and from there it justsnowballed, so to speak. It’s all[about] what would you do foryour kid? How far would yougo?

Silva: How long did it take towrite?

Hazelgrove:First draft wasless than six months.

Silva: Howmuch of yourself doyou put in your characters?

Hazelgrove:You really dohave to have yourself in there. And you have to have some-thing to lose. If [readers] don’tcare about the characters, they’re not going to care aboutthe book. You have to write likethat’s you. In “The Pitcher,”“Real Santa” [and] “Jack Pine,”there are pieces of me.

Silva: You’ve had a pretty goodyear. The last two books you’vewritten, “Real Santa” and “ThePitcher,” you sold themovie rightsto, and now they are going to bemade into films.

Hazelgrove: [Bates] is stillwriting the script for “ThePitcher.” He’s going to givethat right to Kevin Costner. Hethinks it’ll be ready in January.

I think [“The Pitcher”] is areally cinematic book, and if theright person reads [it], I thinkit’s going to be great. So, I think

also that’s why he’s taking solong – to get the screenplayright.

“Real Santa” is a little moreamped up. It’s a very high-con-cept kind of Christmas movie.[It could be] in the Hollywoodgenre, but it could easily beturned into a made-for-TV mov-ie, because [Rocco] had talkedabout using the same crew thatshoots “Modern Family” tomake the movie.

So, it’s hard to say whichway it’ll go – feature or [televi-sion movie].

The rule is television moviesget made a lot faster. Features, you have to get all of the bigpeople interested. So, I think it’sa little more involved.

Silva: Do you have a prefer-ence?

Hazelgrove: I really don’t.

Silva: Are there any nervesabout yourwork being turned

into amovie and then it not beinggood?

Hazelgrove: It’s great whensomething is made into amovie because it gets that bigaudience. Even a [bad] movie, people will hear about it more. That’s such a different medium.I will say this, most movies failbecause they have [bad] storiesat their core. They’re flimsy. It’snot thought out. My novels aregood stories at their core.

“Real Santa,” if it does comeout as a made-for-TV movie, there is a chance that it couldbe kind of goofy – it could bethis goofy movie. And you couldmiss all of the dimension of it.

Silva: Do you think you’ll beon set for either film or go to thepremieres when they come out?

Hazelgrove: I’d love to beon set.

Silva: Thatwould be amazing.Sit in a littlemovie director’s chairand hang out.

Hazelgrove:Hang aroundthe food truck (laughs). It’llprobably be done in Hollywood.I would love to go. But, I am thelow man on the totem pole.

Silva:What about the pre-miere?

Hazelgrove: I would love to goto the premiere. But my think-ing is probably not. Because I’mjust the writer, ya know. Holly-wood is such a weird place.

Silva: Is this the dream for youor is there more to be done?

Hazelgrove: Probably get ona bestseller list and stay there.

Obviously, see the moviesproduced – seeing both moviesout would be great.

I try not to get too far aheadof myself because it’s a brick-by-brick career.

[Right now,] I have bookswaiting to be written that I’vealready signed for, and that’sgreat because it allows you tohave focus as a writer. For [a]long time, I’d write books andthink, “I don’t know if this willever get published.”

Silva: I feel like I would dothis, but do you ever go to Barnesand Noble for an ego boost? Tosee your own book on displaythere.

Hazelgrove: Good question. Here’s what I do. At Barnesand Noble, the books are allon tables, so what peopledon’t know is that publisherspay to get their bestsellers onthose tables. The rest of theauthors have to fight for shelfspace.

So, my book, “Real Santa,”is [organized] really neat.[Barnes and Noble] put it faceout instead of spine out. Butit’s not on the tables.

So, I [find] my book; I pickit up. I walk over to the table, shove a few [books] over andthen plop – I put it on the holi-day table.

When people walk inBarnes and Noble, they lookat the tables. I probably havebeen to 20 Barnes and Noblesin the Chicago area.

Silva: Ever think about movingto Hollywood and becoming ascreenplay writer?

Hazelgrove: Never say never. The only way that would hap-pen is if I continue to publishpretty high-concept books inthe future. And they continueto get bought and made [intomovies].

Silva: So, what’s next for you?Are you writing anything at themoment?

Hazelgrove: Yeah, there’s abook coming out in the springcalled “Jack Pine.” It’s a bigNorthwoods epoch aboutloggers and environmental-ists. It’s sweeping, and it’s in alocation that I think is prettyinteresting to people.

Trainers stressmaking fitnessmore than a resolutionBy CHARLES [email protected]

Planning to make big life-style changes in 2015? Localfitness experts said waitinguntil Thursday, Jan. 1, isn’tnecessary.

With the upcoming gamutof holiday food and parties, trainers recommend main-taining current workout rou-tines, or starting a routine forthose who don’t already do so,to stay ahead of the game.

“You’ll burn off some of thecalories that will come fromall the gatherings,” said ChrisHylton, owner of River WestFamily Fitness, 108 1st St., Bat-avia. “Starting before the hol-idays is always a good time.”

A study published in theNew England Journal of Medi-cine in 2000 concluded that theaverage weight gain during theholidays is 1 pound. This aver-age increase, however, did notappear to go away during thestudy participants’ spring andsummer months, resulting inan continual weight increase

over time, according to thestudy.

The owners of various fit-ness centers say they alwayssee an uptick in membershipin January, which they attri-bute to people using the newyear as a fresh start. Thosefeelings don’t always con-tinue later in the year, saidDanny DeKing, co-owner ofPound 4 Pound Fitness, 21 S.

Main St. in Elburn.“We see a downslide in the

number [of members] as theyear continues on,” DeKingsaid. “People get motivatedbased on New Year’s resolu-tions. When that wears out, people start to fade out.”

To encourage residents tostart their fitness goals early,Hylton, DeKing and other lo-cal fitness centers are offering

package deals and reducedmemberships for those thatjoin this month.

Getting started on two keytasks – exercise and dieting –will be difficult for anyone thatis usually sedentary, Hyltonsaid. The orientation for a newRiver West Fitness customerincludes a discussion of theirgoals and a review of how touse the training equipment inthe facility.

A little support can go along way for those startingan exercise regiment. Mostfitness centers offer personal,one-on-one training so some-one is there to keep customersmotivated. Hylton also findsthose who workout with afriend or in groups tend to holdthemselves more accountable.

St. Charles resident Vir-ginia Kammerer has found aninterest in Zumba classes andother workouts offered at theCurves at 1578 E. Main St. inSt. Charles. She said JeanineFitzmaurice, owner and fran-chisee of the St. Charles loca-tion, is a great motivator andalways urges customers to

push harder and further theirlimits.

“I try to go three times aweek,” Kammerer said. “I feelbetter for it, frankly.”

Fitzmaurice said walking isa good introductory exercise forsomeone who doesn’t alreadystay active. But it should be com-plemented by strength trainingto build muscle, she said.

Nearly all local fitness cen-ter owners encourage peopleto use portion control at var-ious holiday gatherings thisseason. This could range fromselecting the holiday drinkswith the fewest calories to hav-ing to just one cookie insteadof a handful, DeKing said.

“I do want people to enjoythe holidays … but we have tomake better choices when [we]are out at restaurants and par-ties,” Fitzmaurice said.

No matter what time ofyear, the results will only beas significant as what the indi-vidual contributes, the ownerssaid.

“Really it comes down tohard work and dedication,”Hylton said.
