Today's gospel is the moving account of Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. What begins as a seemingly chance encounter while drawing water at a well becomes for the woman the revelation that Jesus is God: "I know there is a Messiah coming," the woman says, and Jesus responds: "I who speak to you am He." She receives a gift: "the water I give shall become a fountain within...welling up to eternal life."

The Samaritan woman offers Jesus water, and Jesus offers her “life giving” water. The life giving water is reference to the water of baptism, a fountain welling up to eternal life. Did you know that in the first few centuries of the Church all the baptisms took place the night before Easter by the local bishop? As time went on, the bishop could not do all the baptisms. The priests and deacons did the baptisms, and the bishop would come by later to lay his hands on the folks for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (just like we do today). Most of us were baptized as babies, but not all. This year Clarissa Hintz will be baptized and will receive Our Lord for the first time in Holy Communion. She will be joined by Taylor Helmuth and Paul Przebelski who will also receive their Holy Communion and Confirmation. Pease keep Clarissa, Taylor and Paul in your prayers.

Speaking of life giving water, Dr. Dan and Carla Gilchrist will be joining us this weekend to share with you how you can offer life giving water to those who do not have access to fresh water in Africa. Can you imagine that there are people in the world today that do not have access to fresh water? You can help. We’ll let you know how at Mass.

For those who might want to spend more time with the Lord, on Tuesday evenings, I will offer the Stations of the Cross at 5:00 PM followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. I’d like to ask each family to make at least one holy hour each year. There is no better time than Lent. Jesus is inviting you to come to Him. Why not this Tuesday? What is keeping you away? Holy Mass is offered each Tuesday at 6:00 PM followed by supper at 6:30 and Adult Faith Formation at 7:15 PM.

Thank you to all those who have pledged to the Diocesan Annual Appeal. We need your help. We need the $25 and the $1000 or more pledges and everything in between. Please know I understand that many families are in a financial hardship. Of course, I am not addressing them. On the other hand, there are many who can contribute. This is one bill we need to make (not out of the general fund, but by individual pledges), so please be generous. We have made our appeal every year since I’ve been here as pastor, and we’ll make it again this year. All funds made over our goal come back the parish 100% tax free. It can’t get
