Since the start of the year, we have already welcomed over 65,000 visitors to The Public who have come to explore fantastic exhibitions and art, watch sell-out performances, get creative and most importantly have fun and enjoy themselves.

In our Art of Motion exhibition you will be at the heart of the art works using your body to create pictures, sounds and animations. There’s also the opportunity to get your own work displayed in building and in our online gallery with two open submissions.

We have another great season of evening entertainment. As well as up coming musical performances from some of the best original and tribute acts around, we are proud to be launching the Now We Are Weekender over the Easter weekend. For those of you who like to laugh, The Public continues to celebrate the best in new and well known comedians. The laughing Sole launches in April – bringing an amazing and much loved comedy club to West Bromwich, and

Al Murray makes his first visit to the building in July. We also have some must-see theatre performances including Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks!

If you’re looking for family activities or fun and entertainment for younger people over the school holidays, check out the Go learn Section for details of exciting workshops and classes along with information on must-see children’s theatre.

Whatever you’re looking for you’ll be sure to find something for you at The Public.

SuMMER ExhiBiTiON 201218 July – 9 September

Our popular open exhibition for local artists returns for its third year. This year’s theme is Portraits and Places. The deadline for applications is Monday 18 June 2012. For more information, visit www.thepublic.com/ summerexhibition. This exhibition is part of the annual Sandwell Arts Festival.

Please note our gallery is open Wednesday – Sunday, and every day in the school holidays.

What do the pyramids, the Sydney opera house and The Public have in common? They all feature on the world’s 1001 “must see buildings” list.

Designed by renowned architect Will Alsop and Julian Flannery, the building is a fascinating, colourful, delightful and inspiring work of art in its own right fast becoming an icon of the Black Country.

We are building a permanent collection of art work from our past exhibitions that is on display around the building. Currently we have six large format prints by one of the UK’s leading photographers, Martin Parr, as well as works by local students inspired by their collaboration with artists. We have an online gallery featuring images from past exhibitions and projects. Visit www.thepublic.com to view a selection of images from Artist Ravi Deepres’ trip to South Africa, from ‘In Living Memory,’ ‘The Summer Exhibition 2011’ and our portrait project at ArtsFest 2011.

ThE PuBlic MEETS… BARBARA NicE

SPONSORED By

The loveable Barbara Nice has been compering The Laughing Sole Comedy Club since it started five years ago. Go Public catches up with everybody’s favourite housewife as she prepares to launch The Laughing Sole at The Public.

The laughing Sole has a great feel and atmosphere, what makes it so special?

This a comedy club unlike any other! There is a special ethos behind the night where everybody is made to feel welcome. The comedians provide material which is both clean and not offensive, creating a friendly and light experience. Comedy should not upset or offend anybody and the Laughing Sole is the nicest, most inclusive Comedy Club around – everybody should come along and share in its magic!

you’ve played at The Public before – what do you love about this iconic building?

We’re really excited to be bringing the Laughing Sole to The Public. I’ve worked with The Public many times and have always been impressed by your high quality venue – pink is one of my favourite colours! The staff are great and the audiences are always up for a good laugh.

What have been your most memorable moments as laughing Sole compere?

The press interest when we started the club was amazing – I was even interviewed on Radio 4’s Breakfast Programme. One night I even crowd-surfed the audience! The club has just grown in popularity over the years – meaning we’ve had to do two sittings and even show the acts on a screen outside. We’ve been able to discover and share new talent – including Isy Suttie who is playing the first night. When the audience first saw her a few years ago we reckoned that we had found a future star… and we were right. It’s great she’s on the first Laughing Sole bill.

After successful sell out shows in Birmingham, the highly regarded and well loved The Laughing Sole Comedy Club heads to West Bromwich.

The monthly comedy club launches on Wednesday 4 April and will take place the first Wednesday of each month.*

A great night packed with laughs, the best up and coming and established comics, and amazing headline acts – all hosted by Barbara Nice.
