HAVE AN EVENT YOU WOULDLIKE FOR US TO COVER? Let us know at [email protected]!?

THE NEW YEAR IS IN FULL SWING, where did the month of January go? It seems like just yesterday the New Year was rung in. Now diets have started and failed, gym memberships opened and closed, Cokes getting thrown away and then bought again; there is a lot that can happen in a month. In a month’s time; teams are made and broken, players excel or are injured, and dreams are thought of and crushed. Go Team is going through changes just like everyone else. We have implemented an entire new layout for the magazine, and it’s to get you more acquainted and

personal with the players. It will help you get to know them just a little more, so that after your reading the magazine you feel as if you have just a few more friends. Check out the rest of the pictures from every game onwww.GoTeamMagazine.com and also you can watch the videos from a few of our events. One such clip is from the Cheer and Dance Exhibition 2010 for Middle School and newly included this year, High School. The U n i v e r s i t y of Southern Indiana cheer team, Go S c r e a m i n g Eagles, had us come out and donate our time to get action shots and team pictures, with a portion of the proceeds getting donated back to the USI cheer team. The pictures turned out great and in total we took 1,241 pictures, WOW, and got some great video of the high school teams that is posted on www.GoTeamMagazine.com! Go Team Magazine is taking Team pictures now! If you have a league and are looking for a new photographer let us know, 812-589-8676, We never charge to come out and take pictures and with every package purchased the parent gets a team picture FREE! Also, 10% of the proceeds go back into your organization. It’s an ongoing fundraiser that we’re calling GO TEAM GIVES BACK and it’s a great tool to boost your fundraising needs! If you would like a price sheet from us just email me at [email protected]. If you own a business and would like to sponsor a photo shoot and show your support for your favorite team in the magazine please contact [email protected]

February - March 2010

This month, Go Team spoke with Dan Mosby with the Dunnigan Family Branch of the local YMCA. Here, he offers an insider’s view of life

on the sidelines and in the locker room.

GT: How did you get into coaching? DM: I played sports my entire life: golf; baseball; basketball. I went to IU, majoring in sports management and I worked at the Y up in Bloomington for a while. Just volunteering, working a little part time, coaching soccer and basketball helping out here and there. When I graduated I didn’t know where it was going to lead me, I came to Evansville and became the sports assistant here at the [Dunigan] YMCA, and helped organize and plan and coach all of the sports here. We have soccer, flag football, basketball and when the sports director Gary Niemeier left in September I took over and I have been sports director as of December. Involved coaching basketball and organizing all of our sports in that nature. I got into coaching because I have a love of the game and I really enjoy helping out the kids in the community, that’s really why I do what I do.

What is your coaching philosophy?Especially here at the Y we want to teach fundamentals, that is the key for everything. We really try to stress to the kids that their not gonna learn to shoot a three pointer if you don’t know how to dribble the ball right or teach those important factors in the game. That’s really why I try to be very hands-on with the kids before I’m very worksey and try to confuse them more.

How many years have you been a coach?I have been a coach for the past three to four years.

How would YOU select a coach?I would select a coach that is a figure head, respected by all the kids around him or players. Someone that is very instructional and demands respect and that everyone looks up to and really knows the game.

What’s unique about you as a coach?I feel like I know the game and middle school aged kids can really look up to somebody my age because I’m not much older than they are right now. I’m only in my 20s and they can really see what I’ve done and where I’ve been. If I know the game I feel like I can teach them the game.

How do you measure success? I would not measure [it] by wins and losses by any means. Success is how well you can teach someone else the game, how well they grasp the game, and how well they show that on the court.

What is your Program Philosophy at the YMCA?Winning is definitely not first, we stress caring, honesty and responsibility here at the Y. Everyone plays, here we do a lot of financial assistance and we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to play, whether they can afford it or not. That is our philosophy here at the YMCA.

Do you have any special tips or tricks you use? With the level that we coach it is very important to be patient with the kids and be very instructional with them and show them hands on and show them exactly what you want so they can reflect that on the court.

What should be the priorities of an athlete? It’s learning the skills that are necessary for the sport, not necessarily going out there and wanting to score 50-60 points a game. Just focusing on fundamentals and the key to basketball or soccer or whatever that be, at an early age.

/ / / / PRE-GAME TIPS from Coach Dan Mosby

1) STRETCH IT OUT Make sure to know your skills and sport.

2) HYDRATE I ask my players to listen first.

3) MENTALLY PREPRARE I ask my players to prepare yourself dribbling down the court and making that basket

4) TAKE A MOMENT TO I ask my players to think before you act, envision yourself before you make that pass or make that dribble. Envision yourself against the other team.

Core Value of the Month: HONORHONOR:

Letti ng someone know you see how valuable they are.

Why is it important to teach kids about honor? Because every day we are given the opportunity to show those around us that we think they are valuable. We honor the people around us by showing respect and courtesy. Our body language, our words, our ti me and our acti ons all indicate who or what we value. Here are some specifi c ways we show honor at school:

We honor those who came before us. When we remember the contributi ons of people who have contributed to our world, our country and even to our lives personally, we honor their memories.

We honor authority. When we respect those in authority, we show that we honor not only the person, but also the positi on which they hold.

We honor each other. Every day our acti ons and words communicate to those around who we consider valuable—and who we don’t, even if we don’t say a thing.

CATCH YOUR CHILD SHOWING HONORCore Essenti als believes that a key way to help your child internalize the character values being taught is to “catch” them demonstrati ng the value. Here are a few suggesti ons on how you can catch your child, and let him or her know you see them showing honor.

• Your child treats others with kindness. • Your child is good at sharing. • Your child treats everyone equally. • Your child treats people of diff erent ages like they are valuable. • Your child reaches out to kids who are new.

These are just a few ways you can catch your child showing honor. The Core Essenti als Program believes it takes an INWARD atti tude to infl uence OUTWARD behavior. The Program is based on aligning the home and school to teach character.

If you do catch your child showing honor, we would love to hear about it. Tell us what your child did in a note sent into the school, or an e-mail sent directly to his or her teacher.
