in 2015.
Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2015
The heritage of West and South Yorkshire has been founded on Victorian enterprise, predominantly the industries of textiles, steel and coal that steadily declined in the early part of the 20th century. Today, the cities of Leeds and Sheffield have been transformed into major centres of commerce. The gleaming high rise and innovative architecture is a stark contrast to the traditional market towns and Pennine villages that still remain. The handsome Victorian architecture can still be seen in towns such as Halifax, Bradford and Huddersfield and are ideal bases for exploring this part of the world, boasting some of the finest hotels in Yorkshire. Museums can be found in every town, telling the story of the Industrial Revolution and the great concentration of historic houses in this part of Yorkshire are the legacy of the immense wealth generated for the Mill owners from the toil of their workers.
Surprisingly, amongst this urban landscape there are plenty of idyllic places to escape, walk, cycle and explore, with two National Parks on its doorstep and the Pennine Trail traversing the backbone of England. This National Trail starts at Edale in the Peak District National Park and continues up through the spine of England, through the Yorkshire Dales and on to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Borders. This is a beautiful and undiscovered part of Yorkshire, the treeless Marsden and Saddleworth Moors have their own ethereal beauty. Once desolate and remote places, today they are the sight of much activity, popular with walkers and cyclists.
We wish you the warmest welcome for 2015 from all the team at Elmtree Press.

This city likes to party. The sheer variety and quality of nightlife on offer in Leeds is amazing. With everything from old fashioned drinking dens to laid back bars and late-night clubs, you won’t have to walk far to find something that suits your taste.
Leeds is the Northern hub for many UK and international companies and is home to two universities, the Northern Ballet and Leeds School of Music. With so much going on, Leeds is buzzing and over the past decade the city’s architecture has been transformed with new and dynamic buildings springing up, creating new vistas and places to hang out. The once depressed canal area is now a thriving and popular place to be, full of businesses and bars and cafes where workers love to socialise in the evening. Leeds is now a fun place to discover, with five great shopping centres, four theatres and numerous clubs this is the place to be.
Why not have a day of retail therapy in the “Knightsbridge of the North”. There are great shopping centres to visit as well as more specialised shops. Exploring is half the fun! Many of the shops and independent boutiques are housed within breathtaking Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Mix and match to your hearts’ content - neither bargain hunters nor big spenders will leave empty handed.

In 1909 Doncaster Racecourse was chosen as the venue for the second international air display after the original one had been held in Reims, France. The Daily Mail offered a prize for the first British pilot to fly a circular mile and bizarrely American Samuel Cody, signed British naturalisation papers in front of the crowd before spectacularly crashing his aeroplane on the first day of the meeting and failing to take any further part in the display!
Every year, the Snooker World Championships brings the globe’s top players to the city of Sheffield at The Crucible.

Sabine Baring-Gould, a curate at Horbury Bridge near Wakefield wrote the words to Onward Christian soldiers, while simultaneously compiling the first serious work in English on werewolves! THE LEGEND OF THE CAT AND MAN CHURCH, BARNBURGH
The village church of St Peter’s in Barnburgh near Doncaster is home to a curious fable. Before the 15th Century Barnburgh Hall was home to the Cresacre family. Legend has it that Sir Percival Cresacre was returning home on horseback when he was attacked by a wild cat or lynx. The horse threw him and Sir Percival continued to fight for his life for a mile before trying to escape the cat by running into the porch of St Peter’s Church. However, the fight had reputedly been so fierce that Sir Percival fell dying in the Church Porch and, in his last dying struggle, stretched out his feet and crushed the cat against the wall of the Porch.
Stones in the floor of the porch of St Peter’s are still tainted with red. There is also a cat at the feet of the Cresacre effigy in the north aisle of St Peter’s Church and ever since it has been known as the Cat and Man Church.

P: 16 www.goyorkshire.com | West & South Yorkshire - Skipton & Wharfedale
Skipton, the capital town of Wharfedale is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Dales.’ Crowned by its magnificent Norman castle and
the bustling high street full of independent shops and cafes, it is easy see why. A market lines the high street four days a week and the local calendar
is peppered with festivals and events throughout the year. For a great introduction to the Dales, Pennine Cruisers run excursions from one hour
to all day boat trips along the canal. Pack up a picnic lunch and catch the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway from the Embsay station, (parking
is free), and take a scenic ride into the Dales to visit Bolton Abbey only a short walk from the station.
The Southern Dales scenery is dominated by Wharfedale with its wide sweeping valley and river, the moorland uplands that turn purple in late August and the
woods that hug the riverbanks. Neighbouring Airedale, which borders the urban outskirts of West Yorkshire, is where the River Aire starts life in Malham and makes
its way down past Skipton on to Keighley, Bingley and Shipley, through to Leeds and Castleford and on to join the River Ouse at Airmyn in East Yorkshire. The area
gives its name to the Airedale Terrier the largest of the Terrier breed of dogs. They were first bred in the area in the early nineteenth century.
Easy access and excellent train links from nearby Leeds, Bradford and Manchester make this part of the Dales very popular for days out for city dwellers, who tend to
favour hot spots such as Bolton Abbey and the picturesque village of Burnsall which are always popular especially on a sunny day. However, there are still many places to explore
and escape the crowds, and for those that are prepared to walk, or enjoy exploring off the beaten track, there are plenty of delightful spots along the river Wharfe and fell
walks where you will hardly meet a soul all day. The smaller dale Littondale is delightful and the road over to Malham from Arncliffe is a spectacular drive. The circular walk from
www.goyorkshire.com | West & South Yorkshire - Skipton & Wharfedale P: 17
Malham village, climbing up the steep steps and over to Gorsdale Scar, returning to the village along the river by Janet’s Foss waterfall is a walk we recommend all visitors should undertake if able, as the views and landscape are quite spectacular. Even for the disabled there is good wheelchair access to the cove itself to be able to see the magnificence of this natural spectacle and you can spend hours watching the star attraction of Peregrine Falcons who nest in the Cove.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park have two excellent centres at Malham and the picturesque town of Grassington where there are popular walks across the falls to the delightful village of Linton or along the River Wharfe. Alternatively continue down to the foot of Wharfedale to pretty Kettlewell, the capital of Upper Wharfedale, once an important centre for trade it was granted a market charter in the 13th century. Take a walk up Great Whernside and on your return there are pubs and cafes to satisfy your need for refreshments or a welcome pint of Theakstons or Black Sheep bitter!
Alternatively if you prefer a day’s touring, a visit to the neighbouring valley of Wensleydale and its many attractions, is a lovely day out. There is an excellent circular route through the village of Buckden and over the tops through Bishopdale where you choose to turn left after West Burton (a village worth stopping to explore and view the falls) and explore Hawes and Upper Wensleydale or alternatively, turn right and enjoy the delightful town of Leyburn, and the attractions of lower Wensleydale returning through Coverdale. Whichever route you choose do remember the roads are narrow and steep in places, so take your time, stop off and explore. For more information please see our website for recommended places to visit.
Remember to check out the events on page 40 which include re-enactments at Skipton Castle, historical weekends at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway plus much, much more.

The beautiful village of Haworth (meaning “hawthorne enclosure”) nestles in the Pennines, close to Keighley. It is world famous for the Brontë sisters, born at nearby Thornton, who wrote most of their novels in the Parsonage there, whilst their father was the Parson of St Michael and All Angels. The Parsonage is now a museum, owned and maintained by the Brontë Society. Haworth is a base for exploring Brontë Country, while still being close to the major cities of Bradford and Leeds.
The 43 miles long Brontë Way leads past Lower Laithe Reservoir, Stanbury to the Brontë waterfalls, the Brontë Bridge and the Brontë Stone Chair in which (it is said) the sisters took turns to sit and write their first stories. It then leads out of the valley and up on the moors to Ponden Hall (reputedly Thrushcross Grange in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights) and Top Withens, a desolate ruin which was reputedly the setting for the farmstead Wuthering Heights. Top Withens can also be reached by a shorter walking route departing from the nearby village of Stanbury.
Haworth is also the home of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, which is a 5 mile long preserved steam heritage railway which originally served mills and villages in the Worth Valley. It runs from Keighley to Oxenhope and connects to the national rail network at Keighley railway station and, as a major tourist attraction, carries more than 110.000 passengers annually.
Haworth railway station was used in 1970 as the setting for “The Railway Children” which starred Jenny Agutter.
Each year, Haworth hosts a number of special events for locals and visitors to the area. One of the most popular is the annual 1940’s weekend when everyone dons wartime attire for a host of nostalgic events. The Haworth Arts Festival is held on the first weekend in September and involves local musicians, combining performance and visual arts and street performance.

www.goyorkshire.com | West & South Yorkshire - Where to Shop P: 23
The main two cities of Leeds and Sheffield are the perfect centres for shopaholics in Yorkshire. Both offer city centre high street stores, independent retailers and boutiques. As an alternative, Meadowhall Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Sheffield and the The Light in Leeds offer shoppers everything all under one roof including places to eat and cinemas.
From Sheffield you can drop down into Derbyshire to experience the Chesterfield Market with over 150 stalls. Then perhaps call off in Buxton and choose a holiday book from the Bookstore, Brierlow Bar as a memento of your visit.
If you are looking for something more traditional, we recommend that you check out some of the smaller towns. Perhaps visit when the market is on to soak up the atmosphere and wander round the local shops.
On the following page please find our shopping trail showing some of our recommendations not just for West & South Yorkshire but across the whole of Yorkshire.

www.goyorkshire.com | West & South Yorkshire - Where to Eat P: 27
Over the years, traditional Yorkshire fare has been joined by new cultural influences. Bradford has a range of great curry houses and within the whole area ethnic restaurants abound. Don’t forget though, that one of the nicest ways to spend a lazy lunchtime is with a picnic of local produce relaxing in the fabulous Peak District.
There are over 15,000 companies involved in the production of food and drink in Yorkshire with many regional specialities. West Yorkshire has the rhubarb triangle of Britain producing 90% of early forced rhubarb, perfect for a delicious crumble to complete a Sunday roast of locally produced beef or lamb accompanied, of course, by Yorkshire puddings!
Check over the hospitality trail on page 30 for some recommended places to eat across the whole of Yorkshire and don’t forget many attractions and farm shops have great tearooms and restaurants that are well worth a visit too.
For the real foodie, look out for the many food festivals and events that take place in Yorkshire throughout
the year and visit our website www.goyorkshire.com
for the latest information.

Ask any student, and there are certainly plenty living in this vibrant city, which is home to two universities and a teaching hospital, and they will give you a similar answer about what attracts them to the city. Sheffield is rather like a big village, it is intimate and relaxed, compact and very friendly; the city centre is where the heart is, with great shops, restaurants and bars, often hosting local groups and jazz nights. Sheffield’s heritage was built on the wealth created from steel and coal, the legacy of the landowners who reaped vast riches from the mines and the hard labour of its workforce. This wealth created many of the great estates of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, including the impressive Chatsworth House, Wentworth Woodhouse, Wentworth Castle, and Nostell Priory to name but a few. Indeed the numerous grand houses in this part of the world, that now open their doors to finance their
upkeep, enable you the opportunity to marvel at the grandeur and riches of a past age.
Today new industries have been attracted to the area and Sheffield is recognised as the United Kingdom’s main hub for call centres and new technology industries. This has bought new wealth to Sheffield ensuring the feel good factor is not only for the young student factions.
Sheffield boasts a host of entertainment venues, the largest group is run by Sheffield International Venues and one of the largest shopping centres in Europe, Meadowhall is situated just to the north of the city.
Sheffield originally took its name from a big river: the River Sheaf. It runs right through the city centre,
eventually joining up with the River Don.
Sheffield FC is the oldest running football team in the world. Just like Real Madrid, Sheffield FC is the only other team to be awarded the FIFA Order of Merit. Established in 1857, Sheffield FC is still on the go today.

Nestled at the heart of the country, Derbyshire, along with the breathtaking backdrop of its Peak District, is easily accessible and the perfect location for a short getaway or longer break all year round. It is therefore no surprise that the Peak District, Britain’s first National Park, is today also England’s most visited National Park.
Those of you who perhaps really want to push the adrenaline boundaries, have a range of exciting activities on offer to get your heart racing. Whether you’re into mountain biking, want to try your hand at rock climbing, caving or sailing, or perhaps take to the skies hang gliding or paragliding, the Peak District and Derbyshire has something for everyone.
After a day of adventure, a cosy pub lunch is your chance to sample the excellent, local country produce. The region is peppered with many tea shops and restaurants which can be found across Derbyshire in the picturesque villages and quaint market towns.
The City of York makes a great day out if you are staying for a week or more and easy to reach by car, bus or train. If you decide to drive, our advice is to take the Park and Ride, this
fast and regular service will drop you in the city centre and halve your parking costs. One of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom, York has it all. The magnificent York Minster dominates the skyline and there is a wealth of historic buildings and houses to visit, as well as some of the finest national
museums in the country, including York Dungeon and the National Railway Museum. The Shambles is definitely a must see, not only for the wealth of architectural features, but also for the great shops and galleries in what is acknowledged as the
oldest surviving shopping street in Europe!
Perhaps take a walking tour or, alternatively, one of the best ways to discover the city and learn about its rich past, is to take the City Sightseeing bus, enabling you to see the city in one day. So,
whether you fancy a day’s shopping, sightseeing or having a lovely meal out, York is definitely the place to go.
Why not take a ghost walk or visit The York Dungeon to discover York’s more gruesome past!

The North York Moors are characterised by their incredible beauty and a calming sense of space, solitude and tranquillity.
Whatever the season, the Moors offer the perfect place to get away from it all. The spectacular cliffs and sandy coves of the North Yorkshire Coast form a dramatic backdrop to the North York Moors National Park. Ridge upon ridge of purple heather moorlands extend into the distance, while the natural beauty of secluded dales and rugged, heritage coastlines make it the ideal place to explore.
The charming fishing port of Whitby has little changed since the days of its famous son, Captain Cook. With its sheer cliffs and ominous, gothic architecture, Whitby proved to be the perfect inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous dramatic novel Dracula.
For a bustling and buzzing seaside atmosphere, try Scarborough. Packed with seaside attractions, the coastal town caters for the whole family. The East Yorkshire coastline ranges from the golden splendour of some of Britain’s finest beaches to the wave pounded rocks of the East Coast’s highest cliffs at Flamborough Head.
