Goals
• I can identify the major cultural groups in Israel and the roles they have played in the nation’s history.
• I can list the steps that Israel and its Arab neighbors have taken to prevent conflict.
• Drip irrigation- a process by which precisely controlled amounts of water drip directly onto plants form pipes, thus preserving precious water resources.
• Potash- a mineral used in explosives and fertilizer.
Expansion of Israel
• Series of wars between Israel, neighbors has led to expansion of Israel
• Israel controls more land now than in 1948 when created
• Result: many Palestinian Arabs live under Israeli control; another source of tension, conflict in region
Conflicts with Israel
• 1948, Israel established; since then most Middle Eastern countries have refused to recognize its right to exist
• Some countries have repeatedly attacked Israel, funded militant groups that conduct raids, terrorist attacks against Israelis
