ACTIVITY Greet your baby with a warm smile and make eye contact with them before taking him or her from their sleep space. Talk to your child about his or her night and what you do as you prepare for the day.

ACTIVITY Once personal-care needs are met and you and your child are ready to start the day, read or listen to the sweet story Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle, illustrated by Jill McElmurry. This book is full of fun sounds for your baby to make, including truck and animal noises.

Processing Activity

ACTIVITY Use an empty tissue box and place a favorite truck or car inside it. Have your infant reach in to discover the toy.

ACTIVITY Under direct supervision, while your baby is in his or her high chair or at the table, provide him or her with a bowl and a variety of large pom-poms or cotton balls. Have your little one place the pom-poms in the bowl as you ask, “Can you put more in the bowl?”

ACTIVITY Place finger foods that are safe for your baby to eat on the tray of his or her high chair. Show your baby how to pick up a piece of food and drop it into the bowl. See if your baby will copy you and do it too. If your baby decides to eat it instead, that’s okay. This is a yummy way to give your child practice using the thumb and index finger to pick up objects.

ACTIVITY Pretend to be a train conductor, car driver or a pilot flying a plane as you move to your next activity, using the sounds and motions with your baby.

ACTIVITY Place a ball in a wagon, if available, or roll it down a ramp or incline. If you’re using a wagon, roll the wagon slightly back and forth, watching how the ball moves. If you’re using a ramp or incline, roll the ball down, talking about how the ball travels. Either way, you are exploring cause and effect – or physics – with your little one!

ACTIVITY Give your infant a rattle. Encourage him or her to shake, beat and rattle to the rhythm while you sing familiar songs such as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” “ABCs” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” Repeat the song your infant enjoyed the most.
