Ben Pendleton - Association President

President’s Report

Dear Brothers and Co-Workers, In case you haven’t heard, we have a new short-term membership campaign going on for the months of June, July and August. Loyal Order members will receive a California/Nevada lapel pin for signing up a member during these months. We’re also giving away two Life Memberships: one for the men and one for the women. For every Loyal Order member you sign up during these months, your name goes into a hopper to win. Remember, this is for signing up new/former Loyal Order members. Great news! Ladies, you’re now being included

in the weekly drawing of $50.00 for signing up a Loyal Order member. Your Association is also winding up it’s final fundraiser for this year. Raffle tickets were distributed to all the District Presidents, who in turn were to distribute them to the Lodges. Our goal is to end this year with an increase in assets. Please be sure to purchase your tickets. Once I got past the heat and humidity, the International Convention in Tampa, Florida wasn’t bad. I want to thank the Mighty 190 and Hesperian 174 Moose Legion jurisdictions for representing California/Nevada in the International Moose Legion Ritual Competition. Thank you! Special congratulations go out to Fred Reichelt, who was appointed to the Mooseheart Board of Directors, Rick Balthazar, who was appointed to the International Risk Management Committee and Bridget Robinson, the women’s incoming Deputy Grand Regent. And we have our three new Deputy Supreme Governors; Carl Murphy, R.J. Barcalow and Dan Papp. Congratulations gentlemen. Derrick Morris is continuing on with the International Heart of the Community Committee. I’d also like to give a shout out to Bob Sypnieski for all his years of service on the Moosehaven Board of Governors. Congratulations Jerry O’Connor for receiving the Moose International Lifetime Achievement Award! California/Nevada really ROCKS! In closing, I’d like to say Thank You, to each and every one of you for continuing to pay your dues, participating in Lodge/Chapter activities and most importantly, supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven. God Bless all of you, our troops and our first responders. Fraternally,

Ben Pendleton

Joe Rigazio – Association Vice President

Vice President’s Report Another few months have come and gone with some new and exciting happenings going on. In June, my wife and I we drove to Mooseheart for the high school graduation. On Friday, we went to Camp Ross and had a tour of the complete facility. Very impressive! There were lots of renovations that were done and a lot in progress. We also got to see where the new children’s play set was going to be erected. They have a great set up and are continuing with improvements. We are very glad that we finally got to see the place. On the way back to Mooseheart we

stopped at Mount Morris Moose Lodge. Even though they weren’t open, they let us in and showed us around. What a place, huge clean and friendly. The next day we went to the graduation of the high school students. It was a small class, but very emotional. The students are so polite and organized. Some were going on to college with scholarships, some were going into the military, and some had trades. But, all acted like they could whip the world. You would and should be very proud of you Mooseheart Kids! Next was on to the House of God for the elevation of Fellows to the Pilgrim Degree of Merit. California/Nevada had 11 new Pilgrims. Sharing this experience with them was pretty moving. Congratulations to all! On our way back home, we went to see Mount Rushmore and to Crazy Horse. On the way back we also stopped at two Moose lodges. One in Mitchel, S.D. and one in Rapid City, S.D. Unfortunately, neither were open yet. Maybe next trip. The end of June we went to Jacksonville, Florida and on to Tampa, Florida for the International Convention. In Jacksonville, we went for a tour of Moosehaven. This place was very, very impressive and moving. All the residents were happy to see us and couldn’t stop talking about their experience. Some even called it Mooseheaven! We also visited Lakeshore Moose Lodge #2929 and Chapter #1495. The convention was an experience all it’s own and I’m sure we will be talking about it at our own convention in September. Speaking of convention, we hope to see all of you there for a fun and informational time. In the meantime, be safe and happy. Respectfully,

Joe Rigazio

Friendliest Place in Town?

Are our lodges the friendliest places in town? Make sure to say "hello" to new and old members, especially those who are not a familiar face. Visiting members need to feel welcome; make sure they do feel that way. Making them feel welcome is the biggest part of our retention program. Brag about your lodge to the visitors. Take the time to show them around the lodge and show them what a great facility you have and the many things that are available for the members to participate in.

At International Convention in Tampa, FL., our Director General, Scott

Hart told and showed us experiences he had when he played "Undercover Boss" when he visited various lodges throughout the Fraternity. Some were very friendly and some practically ignored him. Some asked to see his membership card (although many did not even recognize the name), and some served him not even looking to see who he was or if he was even a member. Greet everyone with a smile, handshake or hug. We ARE the friendliest place in town!

Bill Stukes – Association Jr. Past President

Jr. Past President’s Report

Just back from International Moose Convention in Tampa, Florida! It was very informative and fun! The one subject that kept coming up was: Membership Retention! Not a bit surprised. As Membership Retention is one of our problem areas in the Loyal Order of Moose. And we are not alone. Many other Fraternal Organizations are having similar problems within their ranks. We always tout ourselves as the Friendliest Place in Town! But are we? Are we giving our members what we promised them when they willingly joined with us? I believe if we stay connected with our members, new and old alike, we will have a better chance of keeping them active in our Moose Lodges and Moose Legions.

Our Director General, Scott Hart, went around the country undercover. Such as Undercover Boss on television. And he found some surprising results! Some good and some not so good. At the end of the day we can all learn from this. And that is we need to welcome members into our lodges with friendly smiles and open arms. In conclusion, I believe that treating each other as we would like to be treated is the best way to retain our members and to also sign new ones. Good luck and I hope to see you all in Reno in September. Thanks for all you do and God bless. Fraternally,

Bill Stukes

Annual Convention 2017

Greetings all and another year is coming to an end with new opportunities around the corner, for a new and better year! Our Official Visitors at our Annual Convention will be as follows: Pilgrim Council Danny Albert for the Loyal Order Of Moose and for the Women Of The Moose, JR. Past Grand Regent, Judy Davis. We truly look forward to their words of wisdom. The Annual Convention also brings in new ideas, opportunities for advancement, recognition, a little work, opportunities to meet and greet and to see old friends and to make new ones.

With that said, we will have the Bellflower show after the 25 club party on Friday night, installation of new officers on Saturday night and an Awards Breakfast on Sunday morning; in between this, a lot of new information at the meetings. With that, I would like to thank in advance all the returning State and District Officers, Committee Chairman, and all our members for all they have done and will do again. Next, I would like to cover a few of the hot issues that some are asking about. They are the State Association Treasurer, Association Secretary, “March of Checks,” and finally, submitting applications for the State Association. Treasures time in Office: At the 2017 Mid-Year Conference, it was announced that the proposed term for the Treasurer would be 3 years. Moose International has approved this, but needs to be approved again by us. If approved, the new term would not take effect until the September 2018 elections. The Association Secretary’s three (3) year commitment ends September 2017, and I have been asked to continue on and will do so, if approved. More information will come later on this. March of Checks for “Moose Charities” Projects and Programs: Please write the checks directly to Moose Charities and NOT to the California/Nevada Moose Association. This would cover checks for the Centennial Project, Endowment Fund, Scholarship, Safe Surfin, and Moosehaven. The Youth Awareness checks DO go to the California/Nevada Moose Association. This is also noted in the District Presidents handbook. Please note that writing checks for Moose Charities does not stop at the Mid-Year Convention and should be submitted the entire year. This will insure fast and timely credit for your most appreciated donations. Association Applications: As always, to be in the Roster, your applications for a position, if accepted, should have been submitted before or by July 15th. After that date, you can still be appointed or elected and still serve and be recognized, but might not be in the roster.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone for their support of our Association, Mooseheart, Moosehaven and remember that we are a TEAM. Together Everyone achives more! God bless our Military and our children at Mooseheart. “It’s All About the Kids” Fred Reichelt, Association Secretry

Youth Awareness Congress Greetings all The Youth Awareness Program is basically over for 2016-2017. We want to thank all of

Gail Marlatt – Liaison CNMA

Update from CNMA Liaison Well, we came close to PLUS-1 for the Association this year. We had many members attending the Convention in Tampa, FL. who sat through the final results for the other Associations and waited to see how ours did.

WITH All our Lodges and higher Degree units working harder and together there is no reason we can't make it this year (I'm counting on all of you).

It was a real pleasure to be there when our new Deputy Supreme Governors were sworn in for this new year. (Carl Murphy -, R J

Barcalow and Dan Pap. There were also 15 Lodges who earned the coveted Premiere Lodge Award. Lots of great information was presented at our workshops and meetings. Watch your Moose Magazine for information on the new Veterans Program and other important programs being initiated. Go to your Lodge and Chapter meetings and find out more of what your representatives learned to take back to you. THANK each of you for what you have done and what you WILL do in the future. Let's shoot for PLUS 1 in membership by April 30, 2018. Thanks,

Gail Marlatt

Training

Two Day Hands on Technical Training (2 HOTT) classes for the California/ Nevada Moose Association (CNMA) are currently being conducted throughout northern and southern California. It is suggested that those who must attend these sessions make every effort to attend a session closest to your location. A schedule of WOTM training sessions is available on the CNMA website under Fraternal Education and are listed by date. Please let the session leader know that you plan to attend so that adequate preparations can be made for the specific number of students. WOTM makeup training sessions

are being coordinated through Pat Adams. She can be reached at [email protected]. Two Administrator Schools have been scheduled in the coming months, one in Modesto, CA and one in Simi Valley, CA. Please take advantage of these scheduled sessions -- remember you must complete a registration form and mail or email it to [email protected] to register for the training session. WALK INs WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED as materials are ordered from Moose International (MI). Information and registration forms can be found on the CNMA website at www.ca-nvmoose.org under Fraternal Education by selecting the specific training announcement. Lodge officers are encouraged to take the Lodge Leadership & House Committee training on line using the Moose International website. It can be found at www.mooseintl.org, select Members Area (found at the lower left hand corner of the Moose International Home Page), Moose Training, Online Training, Online Training – Credit Eligible, Lodge Leadership & House Committee. Don’t know how to find a schedule of classes in California or Nevada? Go to the CNMA website and select Fraternal Education on the left-hand side of the page. Review each monthly section to find all the training opportunities available in the Association. Moose Technical Trainers are available to assist Fraternal Units with LCL net and/or QuickBooks. They are only a phone call or email away! A listing of all Moose Technical Trainers can be found on the CNMA website by selecting LCL NET and scrolling down the page. Have you taken advantage of the procedures that are available on the CNMA website under the LCL NET section? These procedures have been developed to help all fraternal units with day-to-day operations and tasks. California Mooseheart Child

CA/NV Moose Members: Here are some pictures we took of our California Mooseheart child, Autumn Campbell, who lives in the Minnesota Home. Autumn is 13 and was promoted from the 8th grade into high school on Friday June 2nd. She is an excellent student and received many awards at the awards ceremony on Thursday, June 1st including the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She is thriving at Mooseheart and is a model resident according to her family teachers. She plans on being an LIT this summer while she is on campus at Mooseheart, which she explained is like a family teacher to the younger kids. Also enclosed is a picture of her playing the saxophone in the school band at the high school graduation on Saturday June 3rd. She also marched with the band to the House of God and played for the Pilgrim March. Notice she is wearing the JROTC uniform in the picture. She was excited to meet Fred who is now a Director on the Mooseheart Board of Directors. She wants to thank everyone in California/Nevada for their support and for the opportunity to be at Mooseheart.

Mike Aldrich – Loss Prevention

Loss Prevention

Well summer is about half over and it is time to start "safety" preparing for the autumn and winter months. Now is a good to time take a look at your lodge, area both inside and outside. Unfortunately, it won't be that long before the leaves start to fall and the rain arrives. Also, it is getting darker in the morning and evening hours, so it really is a great time to look around for those trip and fall hazards now when you have plenty of time to find and fix problems. Some common problems come to mind: a. Welcome mats have become worn (trip) b. Pot holes in the parking lots (trip and fall) c. Non-functioning lights, inside and out d. Handicapped parking areas not clearly marked and lighted e. Vegetation not trimmed away from walkways and entrances f. Storm water control systems not in place g. No systems in place for controlling pests In addition, kitchen areas need to be looked at for liquid, garbage and refuse disposal, as well as equipment for temperature control and written procedures for personal cleanliness. Many of the above items and a lot more can be identified through your Lodge Safety Inspection Form. Start working on completing the safety inspection now. Remember, the safety inspection form is due, to Moose International, not later than September 30, 2017 (but it is okay if you complete and send it in early). The safety form is on-line at MI. If your inspections find areas that need correction and those areas can't be completed on the spot, develop an action plan to make the corrections at a future date. Have a great rest of the summer and autumn.

Carol Veach – CA/NV WOTM Membership Coordinator

Women of the Moose Membership “If I told you that you could clothe, feed, house and educate 295 needy kids and support over 250 seniors for only $50...... for the first year and then $30... each year after, would you? Ask me

about it!” WORDS FROM TAMPA! Don’t know who said it, or exactly where, but when co-workers came back from the International Convention in Tampa, Florida, those words were all over Facebook. They were followed by lots of good comments on using the words to entice new members. Sounds like a good thing to me! You could also divide the yearly amount of dues by 365 days for a cost of just over eight cents a day and add that information to your talk. I like the “Elevator Speech” by our own Grand Chancellor, Barbara McPherson. It tells your prospect a lot more about the Moose in the time it takes an elevator in a hotel to reach your floor. We passed out a lot of copies at the Membership table in Reno, NV. last year. Ask your Recorder to order some free pamphlets that fold up to about the size of a credit card. They also have words you can use to enlighten a new candidate. All of these words are intended to make it easier for you to make contact with the women around you and ask them to join your Chapter. Use the words that suit you and feel free to change them to make them your own. When I ask “Super Sponsors” like Judy Neu in Arizona and our incoming Deputy Grand Regent, Bridget Robinson how they do it, both will tell you they just talk to women. They talk about the Moose because they are proud and want to share what they have found in their membership. They also try to keep tabs on these new members and make sure they enjoy being in the Chapter. By August, things are settling down in our Chapters. This is a chance to concentrate – early in the year – on sponsoring new members and building your Chapter. Please talk to your friends and co-workers to bring them into the Moose. I hope some of these words will be useful to you. Go get ‘em!

Denise (Dee) Angeles - WOTM Community Service Chairman

WOTM Heart of the Community Let me introduce myself. My name is Denise (Dee) Angeles and I have recently been selected as the Women of the Moose State Community Service Chairman for California and Nevada. In this position, it is my responsibility to promote the Community Service endeavors sponsored by Moose International, namely, Special Olympics, Moose Youth Awareness Program, Safe Surfin’, Valued Veterans and Tommy Moose, as well as the many community service programs supported locally within our Association. I will also be working closely with the

Association “Heart of the Community” Chairman. As we have done in the past, we will be collecting blankets, hats, Tommy Moose, Tommy Moose Coloring Books, Tommy Moose Bookmarks and Tommy Moose Bags during our Annual Conference. These items will be given to various Reno, NV. organizations. Please stop by our booth and collect some of the various pamphlets that the committee has to distribute, identifying the various Community Service Programs. Please take this information back to your Chapters and present it to the co-workers so that they will be informed about the different programs. I would like to ask a favor. If you have pictures of events that you recently had pertaining to Community Service, please email them to me at [email protected]. I want to show the co-workers the wonderful things that the Chapters are doing. Our Committee would like to thank all the co-workers for their continued support of our many programs and for the work they do for organizations in their communities. I look forward to seeing you all in Reno. Please do not hesitate to email me with questions or if assistance is required. I am also available to come to your Chapter to do a presentation on Community Service. Thank you again for your service. Denise (Dee) Angeles

Jesse Orta – CNMA Veteran’s

Moose Valued Veteran’s

Moose military Veteran Commrades, efforts to identify all Moose veterans, men and women, continue and our California/Nevada Moose Association will soon swell from a Battalion to Regiment size. We have so very many special and unique members in our organization that, undoubtedly will be a part of our special recognitions in the future. When you interview veterans, please inquire and record about their campaign periods, special assignment and experiences. We will find and later honor: Pearl Harbor survivors, Ex-Prisoners of War, Defenders of Bataan & Corregidor, D-Day veterans, Korea/Grenada campaigns and all campaign periods eventually working our way to the youngest/newest Gulf War Veterans. Remember that all veterans can most easily call Moose International and self-identify as a veteran, get your new Valued Veterans membership card and even pay your dues in one easy move. There are so many issues that affect veterans and their families, and responding to contemporary needs, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continues to change and modify its programs, and to change long-held policies. “Veterans Choice” allows veterans to qualify for local and private medical care. A new SCAM tries to trick veterans by using the very same toll-free phone number, but the wrong prefix – (800) in the WRONG one. When a veteran is awarded compensation, it is computed from the “Date of Claim” no matter how long it takes or even if the application was made on a bar napkin. Now, the way to preserve the earliest Date of Claim is to submit VA form 21-0966, up to a full year before the actual claim application is submitted. Agent Orange exposures are now confirmed in Korea, Cambodia, Guam, Brown & some Blue Water Navy and even in USAFR crews now using the planes that were used to spray. There are 5 new Agent Orange “Presumptive” conditions [Hypothyroidism, Bladder Cancer, Stroke, Hypertension & all Parkinson-like conditions] and the VA is stone-walling to gain as much time before officially changing their regulations. This is the period of most “Stand-Downs” and there is always a need for toiletries, clothing, volunteers and especially, veteran ‘mentor/guides’ for a day at a time. BX/PX/NavX priviliges will be open to all qualified veterans for online shopping on Veterans Day 2017. Register at “VetVerify” to establish eligibility. National Outrage:18-22 Military veterans commit suicide every day; and not all states report. We can at least be a part of the solution.

The government of South Korea has authorized and minted a special medal to be awarded to American military who served in defense of the South Korean people. Please help us identify all veterans who served in the Korean theater so that we may plan another series of special presentation ceremonies. Some easy and clear claims for VA compensations are easily submitted by anyone, but the best insurance for success is to always go to an “ACCREDITED” veterans service officer. The local CVSO (County Veterans Service Officer) is often, but not always the best. Remember that every legitimate Veterans Organization has Accredited “Department Service Officers” available throughout the state; and all service officers do not charge for their services. If you are ever DENIED, the ACCREDITED service officer is critical! Veterans who have never filed VA compensation claim or have filed and been awarded a percentage but would like increase percentage or if you have filed VA claim and been denied, you have one year from denial to file your appeal or claim is dead. Begin planning now to develop your annual Patriotic Calendar: Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, D-Day, Flag Day, ETC; and plan an activity and program around it. A new proposal in congress by one of the very few military veterans members of congress will help veterans HR-11 the Veterans Preventive health coverage Fairness Act – would end the practice of charging veterans copayments for preventive medications from the VA. Let’s hope this one is passed by our congress. Veterans who qualify for annual VA clothing allowance,($740+) must submit VA form 10-8678 by 29 August- it is your responsibility to meet VA deadlines. Please remember that our California & Nevada Moose Association conference will meet again at the Atlantis Hotel/Casino in Reno September 7-10, 2017. Please try to attend this important organizing meeting and enjoy time with like-minded friends from throughout the state. We are hoping to have a separate veterans session in order to better organize and establish a network for the exchange of ideas and information. There is a need for a structure, at least an e-mail or phone network that connects all our veterans and districts throughout our California & Nevada association. We continue to send our association webmaster new information for the new Veteran’s web page; giving valuable US V.A. and CA/NV VA that applies to veterans and their families. We also wish to request your photographs of Moose veterans in uniform and in service. This will be a great network for sharing information, ideas, questions, inquiries and ETC.

MOOSE – Honoring Community Heroes Membership Campaign

Membership campaigns are created and implemented by the Membership Department at

Moose International. Annual Membership Campaigns typically run from May 1 to April 30 and

have a unique theme each year.

This year’s Annual Membership Campaign is Moose – Honoring Community Heroes, which

runs from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018. Last year we focused on growing our Lodges and

Chapters in order to support our core values. Now it’s time to build on that success and push

above those levels and recognize those individuals and organizations who share our value of

“doing good for others.”
