STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

He said to them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few…’” (Luke 10:2) As Catholics we are all called to serve. However, many of us are unsure of what our charisms or gifts from the Holy Spirit are to help build God’s Church. Through prayer we are able to discern how God is calling us. The next time your pastor or fellow parishioner asks you to join a committee, ask God first, if that is what He wants you to do with your gifts.

COLLECTIONS

The collection for last weekend was $4,635. The Peter’s Pence collection was $349. We are very grateful for your loyal support.

Policy for Baptism of Children

Call to Celebrate: Baptism, which consists of three group sessions, is required for parents seeking to have their infants/children baptized at North American Martyrs. It is strongly suggested that parents prepare prior to the birth of their child. To register, contact Joan at 508-798-0612 or [email protected]. The Preparation Sessions are held in September, January, April and June. The full policy is posted on the bulletin board of the church and on the North American Martyrs website.

Explanation of the ‘ROE ACT’

Currently before the Legislature of Massachusetts are two identical bills (House No. 3320 and Senate No. 1209) proposing the “ROE Act” (HB 3320: “An Act Removing Obstacles and Expanding access to Women’s Reproductive Health” and SB 1209: “An Act to Remove Obstacles and Expand Abortion Access”). The Legislature may very well act on these bills this summer.

These acts, if passed, will: expand abortion access, including late-term abortions, during the nine months of pregnancy for virtually any reason; eliminate any requirements that late-term abortions be performed in a hospital; eliminate the requirement that provides medical care to a child who survives an abortion attempt; eliminate the requirement that a minor under the age of 18 have the consent of a parent, guardian, or the courts; and expand state funding for women who cannot afford the procedure.

Mr. James Driscoll, the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, will make a presentation on this important and urgent matter in the parish hall at Christ the King on Tuesday, July 9 at 7:00 pm. All are invited to come and learn what steps can be taken to oppose the passage of this legislation. The meeting is planned for all the people of Central Massachusetts and our Diocese.

Holy Hour For Priests

On Friday, July 12 from 7 to 8 pm a holy hour to pray for priests will take place at Immaculate Conception Church on 353 Grove St., Worcester. It will consist of adoration, a short reflection, the rosary, silent prayer and benediction, and will be repeated on the second Friday of each month.

Divorced/Separated Support Ministry

Are you a divorced or separated Catholic who needs to share with others what you are going through? Meetings are held at St. Joseph’s Church, 10 H Putnam Ext. in Charlton, MA on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 7- 9 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus room. Our next meeting dates are July 8 and July 22. For more information, contact Karen Lennox at 508-373-2067.

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time May I never boast except in the cross. (Galatians 6:14)

T he church in Galatia was struggling. The people there had gladly welcomed Paul’s simple

message: Jesus Christ died for their sins, rose for their salvation, and was now inviting them to embrace that salvation through faith and baptism. But after Paul left Galatia, other people arrived with a more complicated message: if you don’t embrace all of Jewish law, especially circumcision, your salvation is incomplete. You have to become a Jewish convert as well as a Christian.

When Paul got wind of this, he fired off a harsh letter of rebuke. “Are you so stupid?” he asked. “It is those who have faith who are children of Abraham,” not just those who are circumcised (Galatians 3:3, 7).

For Paul, the issue went to the heart of the gospel message. If the Galatians embraced circumcision, they would be perpetuating the old division between Jew and Gentile that Jesus had come to destroy. Not only that, but they would be feeding the lie that Jesus belongs only to a certain class or type of people. “There is neither Jew nor Greek,” Paul told them, “there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

This is one of the most powerful truths of our faith: in Christ, every division is wiped out. Being a Christian is not a matter of deciding who is “in” and who is “out.” Neither are there different “levels” or “classes” of believers. There’s only everybody. We are all equally sinners who are equally loved by God and forgiven by the cross. The question is whether we will accept this salvation and let God’s love heal our divided hearts and change our divisive actions.

Paul never wanted to “boast” about anything that made him feel special or better than other people (Galatians 6:14). The gift of God’s merciful, liberating, transforming love outshone everything else. This love is available to you today at Mass. Come and taste it. Let it break down every division in your heart.
