STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” (Luke 17:18)

Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter, and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you.

COLLECTIONS

The collection for last weekend was $5,799. We are grateful for your loyal support.

Policy for Baptism of Children

Call to Celebrate: Baptism, which consists of three group sessions, is required for parents seeking to have their infants/children baptized at North American Martyrs. It is strongly suggested that parents prepare prior to the birth of their child. To register, contact Joan at 508-798-0612 or [email protected]. Sessions are held in January, April, June, and September. The full policy is posted on the bulletin board of the church and on the North American Martyrs website.

Novena to St. Joseph in Worcester

The 8th Annual Novena to St. Joseph will take place at Christ the King Parish on Monday evenings, 7:15-8:00 p.m. There will be prayer for the seriously ill, for improvements in palliative care, and prayer to raise awareness about all attempts to end human life unnaturally as in the case of physician assisted suicide or euthanasia. Rev. John Gavin will be the speaker/homilist this Monday, October 15. As always, all are welcome to participate in this annual Novena.

Why should we care for the environment?

This is the question that Salt and Light Television Network attempts to answer with the brilliant documentary series Creation. Many around the world have grappled with the urgent questions of the environment and ecology by focusing on political and ideological solutions that may be noble and good, but are often lacking in deeper meaning and purpose. Creation seeks to answer the deeper questions about ecology and the environment within God’s revelation as found in his creation and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Each 30 minute episode will be presented in the parish hall on 6 Friday evenings throughout the year beginning at 7pm with discussion to follow. The episodes and corresponding dates are as follows: October 18 - Sense of Wonder; November 22 - The Human Person; January 31 - Respect; February 28 - Groaning; March 27 - Grammar of Creation; May 15 - Integral Ecology. You can find more information about Creation at www.saltandlighttv.org.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend any or all of the dates by calling 508-798-0612 or emailing [email protected]. We hope you will be able to join us for this important series!

We will continue our annual novena to the North American Martyrs this week at the daily 7:00 a.m. Mass. The Feast of the North American Martyrs will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, Let’s thank God for the wonderful contribution that they made to our Christian faith.

Catholic Support for those Fighting Addictions

Worcester Diocese Calix Society meeting takes place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 am. (Oct. 19), with the potential for Mass and Adoration either before or after. The location is on the second floor of the Emmaus Center across from Sacred Heart Parish in Webster. Calix is a fellowship that provides Catholic support for those seeking freedom from the slavery of addiction, and for their families and friends who also suffer. A key mission of the Calix Society is to lead members back to the rich sacramental life of the Catholic Church, by “substituting the cup that stupefies with the one that sanctifies.” For more information, contact Kyle at 508-887-2225, or [email protected]."

Divorced/Separated Support Ministry

Are you a divorced or separated Catholic who needs to share with others what you are going through? Meetings are held right here at North American Martyrs on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 7 -9 p.m. in the Sacristy classroom in the church. Our next meeting dates are October 14, and October 28. For more information, contact Karen Lennox at 508-373-2067.

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God? (Luke 17:18)

T oday’s readings feature two foreigners suffering from leprosy: Naaman, the army commander of

the king of Aram, and a man from Samaria. Both were miraculously healed by the God of Israel—Naaman, through the prophet Elisha, and the Samaritan, by Jesus. And both recognized it: Naaman pledged not to offer sacrifice “to any other god except to the Lord” , and the Samaritan was the only one of his company to return to thank Jesus (Luke 17:15). Both stories contrast these foreigners’ faith with the complacency of God’s people.

These readings underscore the truth that God is the God of all the nations, not just of Israel. Even in the Old Testament, foreigners sometimes acknowledged Israel’s God as their own. When Jesus was preaching in his hometown of Nazareth, he pointed out that God had chosen not the “insiders,” but Naaman and the widow in Zarephath to whom he sent his prophets. In a similar way, Jesus praised the faith of the Samaritan who returned to thank him. It seems that God sometimes uses outsiders to shake up the people on the inside who may have grown complacent about their faith.

God can still use people on the periphery to open our eyes and give us a different perspective. For example, a person who comes to Mass for the first time may have lots of questions. As someone who has been attending Mass for years, you might have taken such rituals and prayers for granted. But now you dig a little deeper to learn more about the liturgy. Or suppose you become friendly with a Christian from another tradition who isn’t shy about praying with people. He might show you how to be bolder in prayer.

We can all benefit from a different perspective. So get to know people outside your normal circles. God just might have something important to show you through them.
