Golden Fire Department Year In Review2013
“Ordinary People-Extraordinary Job”
Colorado Gaming:
$192,750 towards the purchase of a 2014 Water
Rescue Vehicle
Golden Civic Foundation:
$2,000 for the purchase of new Automatic
External Defibrillators
I t is my honor to present the 2013 Annual
Report summarizing the activities of the
Golden Fire Department and its members.
This overview reflects the hard work and dedication
of the staff and members of the Department who
have made significant sacrifices to ensure that the
citizens and the visitors to the City of Golden
continue to receive the highest quality level of
service they have become accustomed to. 2013 was
not without challenges but the staff and members
have continued to work maintain and enhancing
service levels, keeping up-to-date with capital
equipment replacements and continued to make
technological advancements with the necessary
tools to perform many administrative and
operational functions. In 2013 there was a record
1406 emergency responses by our firefighters,
iPads became the standard in all fire apparatus, new
alerting systems were added to two fire stations, a
joint recruit academy between four different fire
agencies was successfully held and a State of
Colorado Gaming Grant was procured for the
purchase of a new Water Rescue Vehicle in 2014.
We continue our approach to making firefighter safety our #1 goal and at the same time
continuing to meet the mission of the Golden Fire Department for many years to come.
2013 Grants Received

Upgraded the Training Modules in Emergency Reporting.
Streamlined most all of our paper filing processes and except for two areas
we are virtually paperless.
Completed three more purchases for iPads to complete the fleet and staff
with pageable, real time mapping functionality.
Went live on Twitter @GoldenCOFire
Went live on Facebook at Golden Fire-Rescue
Procured a $10,000 grant for all of our wireless fees for paging that goes to
our iPads from the 911 Authority Board.
Worked with FEMA Flood Assistance and the Colorado Department of
Public Safety to bill for damages sustained to the Golden infrastructure
during the September floods. We will be receiving approximately
$50,000.00 in recovery costs.
A lthough 2013 seems to be nothing but a blur now, I look back with great amazement at all we have done. As
2012 brought all the portals to technology 2013 allowed us to plug into “all things techno”, thus we named most of our administrative trainings “All Things Techno”. We found out rather quickly if we aren’t careful we could grab a hold of too much technology. We found ourselves trying to slow some of it down and really focus on the things that were working and getting rid
of things that didn’t perform as well. As we pioneered the way for the City IT Staff we proved that tablet technology and Cloud reporting was a safe and reliable way to conduct business and make our technicians and inspectors much more fluid in the field with instantaneous feedback to our customers. No longer do they bring back a triplicate form from the field that had to be entered into a reporting system and then printed and mailed to our customers. Now they fill out the form on the iPad in our reporting systems and email them their copy of the report right there.
Along with the growth of our technology we also said good bye to some old friends such as the Monthly Newsletter “Smoke Signals”, and paper Training Rosters, Shift Logs and Work
Details. We realized that times are changing and we still felt the need to get information out but in real time now. This began our latest journey through Social Media and our live Twitter account @GoldenCOFire and Facebook, Golden Fire-Rescue. We are able to push out information now while live on scene with GFD as to whether or not the Canyon is closed and the use of alternate routes. We were able to use Twitter to notify our followers that a power outage at a surgical center had also
knocked out their phone lines and all surgeries were having to be canceled. We post weekly safety tips on our Facebook page and show current photos of areas around town that may be a danger in real time. With all that said, we couldn’t do what we do without the support of City Hall and the work from all of our wonderful Volunteers. We recognize the time and sacrifices our volunteers give back and we have tried to give them the best in equipment and technology. Thank you volunteers for everything you give. It does not
go unnoticed here in admin. Thank you also to our City Council for your vision to help us stay in the game. We have equipment that is second to none and we have volunteers that are second to none. Bring on 2014.
