    Presidents Report April 2016

This year has been it seems more busy than the past years with not enough time in each day to get

everything done that I want to get done, but what I have seen and participated in has lived up to expectations.

Another truck show is now under way and time will now evaporate as it has done in the past. I would like to

thank those who have been involved with the organization of the show so far. Volunteers are the basis of our

club with every position held being held by a person who carries out the work of that position for no

remuneration. Without the help of these volunteers this great event would not get off the ground and what a loss

it would be to the people who participate and to those who just come to enjoy the event and all that this event has

to offer not only for these people but for the greater community which benefits from the donations that are made

    afterwards.

The shows that I have been to, Wellington, Gnooblas and Harden,

were well worth going to as they allow some time away from the day to

day grind of going to work. The new projects that are coming onto the

scene are fascinating and gaining much attention wherever they go.

The Golden Oldies are now the proud custodians of another

Commer which Jon, Nathan and myself journeyed to Goondiwindi to

retrieve. Jon has a story from the owners about the life of the Commer

which has been well looked after.

Truck show flyers have been printed and are available for

distribution so if you are going somewhere could you take some with you

and spread the word as the more people that know about the truck show

will mean that more people may attend, thank you for your help.

    Enjoy your day

    Fosel.

    The Little Tug

That could! By, Noel Woodyard and Sharon Way

Tug 2, The start of the project The Finished project ready for the Sign Writer.

For those of you that came on our mystery shed tour last year you would remember that I had started to restore

    a small baggage tug.

As I was restoring the tug I was offered a second one and to Sharon’s reluctance we purchased it for a small

fee. After getting the second tug home and assessing it, I was a little bit puzzled at a few things. Like the engine

oil was clean after it had been running for a while, the tyres had no wear and it was mechanically exceptional.

About a week after we got it home, the bloke who put me onto the tug rang to see if I was happy with my

purchase. I asked him for the history on it and he told me that the company that he works for purchased the tug

many years ago as a fully reconditioned unit to tow things around the business, when it arrived on site it was

parked in the yard and never moved again until I purchased it last year. The little tug was in bad shape body wise

with rust being a huge issue, as was the original machine, but as this one was mechanically sound I turned my

attention to this one as a better proposition to restore.

Sharon and I have cosmetically revitalised the little tug with new windscreens, paint lights and the usual

hydraulics associated something sitting for a long time and now its waiting for something to tow.

So if you are looking for a different restoration project the other tug that I started is available for the price that

the steering box cost me to have rebuilt. It is still quite a good project but when I had to choose between the two

    I took the easy one.

Now it off to the sign writer for the final touches to complete the project.

The little tug will be at this year’s truck show, and available if required to move things around.

Any enquiries call Noel on 0417 779 587.

Commer Truck – RN & SE Stewart

The Commer truck, registration (FXU-360, NSW), was purchased by Ron Stewart, “Milroy” North Star 2408 NSW, about 1951 from Jack Rose’s Garage in Goondiwindi Qld.

This truck was used for many years to cart sheep to Cannon Hill in Brisbane, bales of wool to the wool stores

and return with fuel in 44 gallon drums. One year a jersey calf, only a few days old, was purchased at the Cannon

Hill saleyards for $2.00 and smuggled home between the drums. Needless to say when we stopped she let us

know that she was not very comfortable! “Strawberry”, as she was called, lived for many years and produced a

    calf every year.

Each year the truck was used to spray chemical onto cultivations. A 500 gallon galvanised iron water tank

with mixed chemical on the back and wings of spray nozzles each side and under the truck. The Commer was

used at wheat harvest. Firstly in the 1960’s to cart 125 bags (3 bushel bags) approx. 10.5 tonnes of bagged wheat

from the paddock to North Star silo. This was made possible with a bag loader – one man on the ground loading

the bags onto the loader and another on the truck stacking up the bags. Later on a 8 ton “A” frame bin was placed

on the back tray and the truck towed a trailer which carried 8 tons of grain also.

For many years the truck carted stud sheep to Sydney Sheep Show where Poll Merino sheep were shown.

One memorable moment was when the truck, with a team of stud sheep, ran out of fuel on the harbour bridge in

early morning traffic. Luckily the traffic was light and it was only a matter of turning the tap on to the second

    tank of fuel.

The truck served faithfully until “Milroy” was sold in 1992. Roger N Stewart

The Commer truck has been kindly donated to the Golden Oldies Truck Club. The following photos of how it looks today. The Commer will be on display at The Golden Oldies Truck Club bi annual Show on 13th August 2016.
