BAD IQC

• Poe uses verbal irony. In the story, Montresor says, “Your health is precious.” (Poe 3). This quote shows that Montresor is using verbal irony because he doesn’t really mean that Fortunato’s health is precious.

Good IIQC• Poe uses verbal irony in order to add dark

humor and express a character’s emotion in a more effective way. As Montresor slowly leads Fortunato to his death within the catacombs, he says to Fortunato, “Your health is precious” (Poe 3). Montresor does not feel that Fortunato’s health is precious, and in fact, intends to kill him; his words actually mock Fortunato.

Integrating Unspoken Quotations

• If your chosen quotation is not spoken aloud, incorporate it as if it were your own words:

• … Montresor plans to murder Fortunato during the Carnival season and “The man [Fortunato] wore motley…and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells” (Poe 1).
