GOOD NEWSGOOD NEWS February 2017 Issue
We just celebrated Advent and Christmas, which means...it’s almost time for Lent and Easter! Join us at our six-week Lenten study/dinner/worship series starting on Ash Wednesday, March 1, at 4 pm. Our class this year will explore the Apostles’ Creed using Adam Hamilton’s brand new book, Creed: What Christians Believe and Why. Watch for more information in the church bulletin and other publications as the time draws near.
The Holidaze Craft Faire Committee is happy to an-nounce another positive result of our event in early November. Sara Cleary of Usborne Books and More, one of the many ven-dors at the Faire, as promised
donated a portion of her profit as books to the charity of our choice. In December we received 25 books from her, and Ann Martin delivered them to the Child Devel-opment program at UMOM. Ann, a member of the UMOM Auxiliary, volunteers at UMOM's "Read to Me Program," so we thought she was the perfect person to make this special delivery. We would like to thank all of you who purchased books from Usborne Books at the Faire, making this donation to UMOM possible.
LEFT: Kresta Horn, Director of Child Development at UMOM, accepts the donation of 25 books for her program from Willowbrooker, Ann Martin. The books came from Usborne Books and More, a vendor at the November Holidaze Craft Faire.
Willowbrook offers three dif-ferent styles of worship. The Saturday Sabbath service meets at 5:00 p.m. in the Chapel. This informal service offers an old-fashioned hymn
sing and communion every week. People who attend say it reminds them of their small church “back home”.
Our Sunday morning traditional service at 9:30 a.m. features a more liturgical worship with robed clergy and a full choir in a beautiful stained-glass sanctuary.
Mosaic is a 45-minute informal service on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. that uses the creative arts—music, drama and art—to present God’s Word in an entertaining and relevant way.
If you haven’t already, you owe it to yourself to attend each service once-in-awhile and experience the many ways Willowbrook offers superb worship.

PASTOR'S ACADEMY
I shared during a recent sermon that sometimes more time is needed to further illustrate or
develop a point. In this particular case, after mentioning the premise of a couple of books on culture with differing viewpoints, I said that I needed more time to go into greater depth about those books. I have thought about that concept more and have concluded that, sometimes, I just need more time with not only sermon illustrations, but also scriptural insights, leadership concepts and even organizational matters around the church. There are occasions when, after a committee meeting, I feel like we could have benefited from some additional time together for background, training or coordination with other committees.
Recently we hosted one of the "Holy Huddle" conversations from the Annual Conference lead
by Bishop Robert Hoshibata. This two and one half hour meeting covered a lot of ground but raised more questions than time permitted responses. One man responded to some of the discussion points on the Bishop's agenda and stated that he felt that we weren't asking the right questions. Time didn't permit, but I wanted to hear what he felt those questions were. It is this sort of follow up that we could accomplish with some discussion time at a Pastor's Academy. At the Holy Huddle meeting the Bishop used John Wesley’s concept of the Quadrilateral, a process used to make decisions. For some folks, this concept was new and we probably needed more time to talk about it in order to understand how it fit into the larger conversation.
There may be a better title for our gatherings than Pastor's Academy but for lack of a better
term we will start with that. It will be a catch-all for subjects that need some extra time and discussion. By calling it Pastor's Academy I also leave the door open for our other pastors, Steve Marshall and Sande Kimbel, as well as our retired pastors to come in and lead a session, as needed.
The time slot the Bishop requested for the Holy Huddle was Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. I think to
make it easy to remember, I will simply say that Pastor's Academy will be held Tuesdays at 2. I will advertise the topic weekly as that might determine who will want to attend. No sign-up will be necessary. There will be no materials and they are all going to be free standing in that one academy won't necessarily have anything to do with another.
The Academy will start after the Rummage Sale is over. So to make it simple, we will start the
first Tuesday of February at 2:00 p.m. The first subject is John Wesley's Quadrilateral. We will ask what it means. How do we use it and does it mean the same thing for everyone? Is it a tool that works in considering major decisions for the individual and the denomination?
So keep in mind Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at two p.m. Tuesday at 2 for Wesley's
Quadrilateral. See you at church,
Gary Kennedy

pletion date of June 10, 2017. SOUPS ON!
February 5th is the first Sunday of the month and is the day Willow-brook sets aside to collect food and donations for our local food banks. It is also Super Bowl Sunday.
Help restock the food bank shelves by bringing in your non-perishable
food items for the Salvation Army. Soup kettles will be around Fellowship Hall for cash donations which are given to Valley View Community Food Bank.
Let’s join together again and make this Super Bowl Sunday really “Souper”.
Outreach-Mission News... A heartfelt “Thank You” goes out to all who gave of their time, talents, and treasures in
support of the many outreach opportunities that took place during the Thanksgiving & Christmas season. You have touched so many lives. 20 Thanksgiving turkeys were donated to Valley View Community Food Bank. On Monday, November 28th, 100 twenty dollar Wal-Mart gift cards were delivered to the Southwest Confer-ence office of Sidewalk Sunday School. Billie Fidlin’s greeting that day was, “We can always count on Willow-brook.” The purchase of the gift cards was funded through Benji Fund donations. From the Thanksgiving offering, Christmas gift cards were purchased for Sidewalk Sunday School and the remaining balance was sent to Habitat for Humanity. For over 10 years, Willowbrook has participated in funding and working on the “Mighty United Methodist Coalition Home” builds. The coalition home will break ground in late February. Look for signups if you would like to work on the house. 50 children from 23 families were provided with gifts through the Angel Tree program. Individual Willowbrook members purchased gifts for the children and caregivers were given a $25 gift card purchased from Benji Fund donations. On Monday, December 12, we had a gift wrapping party and over the next several days, the Out-reach Committee delivered the gifts to all the families. Volunteers rang the Kettle Bells for the Salvation Army on December 16th & 17th. Every year “The Army” strug-gles to find enough recruits needed to support this com-munity outreach program. Your gift of time makes a big impact in the success of this event. Thank you to all who volunteered! You collected $1,542.61! Willowbrookers again supported UMOM’s Christmas card program. Each card purchased provides one night of shelter for an individual or a family at the New Day Center. These cards remind us that on the night of our Lord’s birth, the gift given to Mary & Joseph by the inn-keeper was the gift of shelter. The Christmas offering is being used to support the HART Pantry. HART, “Helping At Risk Teens”, provides weekend food bags for teens who struggle with hunger.
Willowbrook always puts God’s LOVE into ACTION. Thank you!
In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all en-counter in life.
Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief and abandonment. That’s part of being human. Another part of being human is needing help from each other. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it. So, if you are experiencing diffi-cult times, don’t struggle alone. Your Stephen Ministers will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you and provide confidential one-on-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life. WILLOWBROOK’S STEPHEN MINISTERS ARE READY TO CARE FOR YOU!

Honor the life or memory of a loved one. Purchase the altar flowers for a worship service as a beautiful expression of your love.
Locate the FLOWER BOOK in the Narthex. Write your name, your loved one’s name, the occasion you want to remember (birthday, anniversary, etc.) and the date you would like to have the altar flowers presented. Place your $40 check marked “flowers” into the offering plate or bring it to the office.
BENJI TAKES A BREAK Benji is taking a little rest, so has asked his sister
"UMWi" to organize a project to send Health Kits to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). The kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or natural disaster. Willowbrook's Unit of United Methodist Women is collecting the following items, and assembling them in kits to send to UMCOR in mid February. If you would like to contribute to this project, bring the items to Wilson Fellowship Hall and place them in the box labeled "UMCOR Health Kits" under the UMW table. • Hand towel - 15 x 25 to 17 x 27 inches (must be new
and unwashed) • Washcloth (also new and unwashed) • Comb (sturdy and longer than 6 inches) • Metal nail file or nail clippers (no emery boards) • Bath-size soap - 3 oz or larger (no Ivory or Jergens
because of high moisture content) • Toothbrush - adult size only, packaged singly (do
not remove from packaging) "UMWi" thanks you in advance for helping with this pro-ject. If you would prefer to give money to help with ship-ping and UMCOR's purchase of toothpaste, you can give it to any member of United Methodist Women. Checks can be made out to Willowbrook UMW.
DISCOVER YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Here at Willowbrook we believe that every member is a minister
and every member has been gifted for ministry through their individual and unique spiritual gifts. Noted Christian author John MacArthur once wrote, “No local congregation will be what it should be, what Jesus prayed that it would be, what the Holy Spirit gifted it and empowered it to be, until it understands spiritual gifts.”
We want all our members, both new members and long-time members, to learn and use their spiritual gifts.
We invite you to “Discover Your Spiritual Gifts” on Saturday, February 11th, from 9:30am – 11:00am in the Library Lounge. Rev. Steve Marshall will help you learn about spiritual gifts, take a spiritual gifts inventory to discover your own gifts, and then learn how to use your spiritual gifts in ministry. Please sign up in Wilson Fellowship Hall so we can plan for materials, refreshments, etc.
