Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: January 26 “Today we celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the continuation of the Lord’s ministry of compassion. The God of all consolation chose and sent his Son into the world for the healing of our body, soul and spirit. Jesus identified with the sufferings of the sick. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the oil poured out on us is a gift of soothing ointment and God’s tender care for his people. This sacrament of healing is our support in weakness and our comfort in suffering to deliver us from all afflictions of mind and body.” Fr. Richard Eldredge, TOR

Our parish family at Good Shepherd is greatly saddened by the passing of our beloved pastor Father Richard, and many have been asking for ways to honor his legacy of Christ-like service to our community. Father Richard poured his whole self into living out Good Shepherd’s mission of discipleship and evangelization. As pastor of Good Shepherd, he taught our community firsthand that “By God, We Can Do It.” He led us out of debt, bringing Good Shepherd into a strong position to continue spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When Good Shepherd acquired new land in 2019, Father Richard saw this as an exciting opportunity for our future, and he greatly hoped that the loan would be paid off as quickly as possible so that Good Shepherd might remain in a strong position to carry out the work of Christ’s Church. In memory of Father Richard’s faithful leadership and stewardship of Good Shepherd, one way to honor his legacy is by contributing to the Father Richard Memorial Fund which is directed toward the land acquisition debt. Checks can be made out to Good Shepherd Catholic Community with “Father Richard Memorial Fund” on the memo line. Please keep Father Richard and his family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

Recently before a 9:00am Mass this month, Father Ronald received a full bag of change from a young brother and sister in our parish, as they had decided to donate their allowance to the Father Richard Memorial Fund. (You

might be able to see in the picture that they wrote Father Richard’s name on the plastic bag.) It is beautiful to witness how Father Richard’s legacy has impacted even the youngest of our parish!

A Message from Fr. John Mark

Dear Good People of Good Shepherd,

I just want to let you know that Bishop Olson assigned me as the Pastoral Administrator of Good Shepherd on January 8, 2020. This means that I am the acting interim pastor. Fr. Ron will continue as Parochial Vicar. Sometime in the future, our Provincial and the Bishop will together discern if there are any clergy changes.

Please keep me in prayer in my new role to minister to the people of Good Shepherd Catholic Community as the interim pastor.

Blessing of Throats

Monday, February 3 | Daily Chapel 8:30am Daily Mass with Blessing of Throats 7:00pm Service with Blessing of Throats About the Feast of St. Blaise: “At the end of Mass today we celebrate our devotion to Saint Blase with the Blessing of Throats. He was Bishop and Martyr in Fourth Century Armenia, and is held in special honor by the Eastern Church. For decades Catholics in the United States have sought the blessing of Saint Blase for physical healing. Catholics seek the intercession of all the Saints because of their holy lives and legendary acts. We invite you to receive this special blessing as a sign and example of God’s power for all those who give themselves entirely to Jesus.” Fr. Richard Eldredge, TOR

Saturday, February 29 at Good Shepherd | 9:30am It is difficult for those of us who have enough to truly understand the situations that families living in poverty experience every day – the decisions they have to make, and the fears and frustrations they feel. That is why we are inviting you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in our Poverty Simulation. This program will allow participants to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. It lasts about 2 hours and the goal is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people. Child care will be provided. Advance registration is required (participants must be 18 or older). Register online at gscc.net/poverty

A disciple SERVES God’s people.

We give our grateful response to God’s gifts through a life of

service to God and neighbor by daily personal prayer, by

generously supporting the needs of the Church, and by

participating in parish ministries and initiatives.

Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

People often wonder or ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there: after the devastating phone call; after

everyone has left the funeral; after the relationship falls apart; after the doctor says there’s no more they can do; after the nursing home welcomes you; after the last child drives away from home; after the gavel comes down on your loved one; after the baby arrives demanding your all; after your last paycheck; after your loved ones have heard your story too many times, but you still need to talk. Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you and provide comfort and support for as long as you need. For details, please visit gscc.net/stephenministry

Many, many thanks to all our parishioners who have stepped forward to serve as Vocation Icon households. We are grateful for your willingness to take the Vocation Icon home and to offer prayers for our seminarians, priests, and all religious. The men and women you are praying for appreciate you, too. If you and your family would like to receive the Vocation Icon, simply see an Icon Greeter before any Mass. All that is requested is that you say a short daily prayer asking God's blessing on those who are discerning His call in their lives. Please help us grow and strengthen vocations! Or, want to become an Icon Greeter? Help us ensure that our seminarians, priests, and religious are always lifted up in prayer. If interested in helping, please contact Joyce Fisher at 817-488-4843. You simply arrive 20 minutes before Mass to recruit a Vocation Icon household to receive the Icon at the end of Mass. Icon greeters are needed for all Mass times.

From the Diocese

Help families send their children to our Catholic schools. Today begins Catholic Schools Week. Bishop Olson encourages you not only to support the Diocesan collection for the Catholic School Tuition Assistance Fund, but also to take part in the many open houses and other activities scheduled in our Catholic Schools. Do a “little something extra” to express your gratitude to our educators and your support for our students this week. For details: www.catholicschoolsfwdioc.org/tuition-assistance

Next week is a Diocesan collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ.
