The Mallard New Year Edition Issue 292 January 2016
Good Turnout to get Christmas Under Way
T he Lavender Hill Mob from King’s
Lynn came to Great Massingham to
sing at our annual ‘Lighting the tree cere-
mony’ on Saturday 12th December. It was a
windy, damp evening but, nevertheless,
many local people braved the weather and
ventured out specially to witness the event.
Alana from the group was chosen to flick
the switch that lit up our tree on the Green.
The Dabbling Duck provided mulled wine
& mince pies to add to the Christmas spirit.
Thanks to Tim Collins for providing the
impressive switch and to Mick Wingell and
Ryan Brown for their hard work in prepar-
ing the event and ensuring the lights actu-
ally came on. Andrew Bickerton
Outside looking in as the ‘Lavender Hill
Mob’ entertained everyone singing
some Christmas carols.
Alana stands ready to flick the
switch when the countdown
ends.

‘Histry Bits’ BLACK SHUCK
Would you dare to walk alone along Peddars Way after dark ?
If you’re foolish enough to answer yes,
please read the following before you go:
“My name is Mark Barrett, and I live in King’s Lynn. On Sunday
October 23rd 1977, when I was aged eighteen, I took part in a
night hike along Peddars Way with other members of the 14th
Wootton Venture Scouts from King’s Lynn.
By about half past five in the morning the party had become
rather strung out and I was walking on my own about a quarter
of a mile from a point called Shepherd’s Bush, where Peddars
Way meets the Castle Acre/Massingham road. Looking up, I
saw what I took to be a sheepdog running towards me. The
distance closed quickly and, about 20 yards away, it leapt at
me. I stumbled to my knees and put up my arms to fend off the
anticipated attack and to shift my weight to counteract the
thrust that never materialised.
I quickly picked myself up and turned around expecting an
attack from behind, assuming that it had passed clean over my
head, only to find myself alone again on the quiet country road
with no sign of it. I remember the dog as big and black, about
the size of a St. Bernard, with a wide mouth, teeth very evident
and two largish eyes amongst a mass of black fur.
When I got home my mother told me about the legend of the
ghost dog, Black Shuck, which I’d never heard before, and how
you are supposed to die before the year is out after having seen
it. On October 23rd 1978, a year later to the day, I was involved
in a serious road accident and was on a critical list for five days,
spending three and a half months in the Norfolk and Norwich
Hospital subsequently.” Co-incidence? You decide.
With thanks to Mike Burgess and Mark Barrett.

BARRY AND JANE MOULE
When we arrived over 28 years
ago with three young children
we were not sure what to ex-
pect but it did not take us long
to know that, with an excellent
school and a community with
events and sporting activities,
we would soon settle in and,
along the way, make many
wonderful friends.
We are now moving to be near
our families but not many miles
away and we will still meet up
to attend the village functions.
We want to say many thanks to
a wonderful village.

Things are moving fast, The RAF MUSEUM has
been taken on by CNAM (50% anyway) so we have
room to breathe!
We are soon starting an Inventory of all Photographs,
Documents, Articles, Human Stories, Artefacts,
Publications etc in our collection. Our main aim is
to produce Display Panels covering all aspects of life
in Great and Little Massingham. These will be on
view at Events, in the Church and Village Hall.
If you have a skill that would help us - Treasurer,
Video Camera user, Typist - then please make contact.
Or, if you just want to jot down notes of your
memories, find some old photos at your leisure at
night when there's nothing on the Telly and hand
them to us we will turn them into a presentation to
be shared with future generations.
We meet at Ant Robinson's Studio at

Health Visitor Clinic
Make the most of this new clinic. Once a month for the next three months the
Village Hall is hosting a
Health Visitor Clinic.
It is a chance for mums
(or carers) to come along
with their babies, have
them weighed and to
chat to the Community
Health Visitor about any
health concerns they might have. It’s a ‘Stay
and Play’ session so there’s the opportunity
to also meet other parents or carers.
The Community Health Visitor coming to
Massingham is Sue Wright.
The clinic will be between
10:00am – 11:00am, on the 4th Tuesday of
the month, starting 26th January.
Funded by Norfolk County Council and
managed by Action for Children.

OUR VILLAGE WEBSITE As we mentioned a few months ago, The
Mallard has arranged for the village
website to be redesigned. We hope you
agree that the website is much improved.
Why not have a look!
Many thanks to Caroline Boydon for all
her hard work assisting with the revamp.
It has not been an easy task and there are
still some village organisations who
need to make contact with Caroline so
that she can bring their page up to date.
Caroline has organised adverts for the
website which will help bring in income
to fund the project. Each copy of the
Mallard is posted on-line every month
so any adverts in the Mallard also go
on-line.
People from all over the world visit our
website which indicates its importance.
Thanks Caroline.

Great Massingham and Harpley C of E Schools Federation On 3rd November Great Massingham had its Church Schools Inspection (SIAMS) and we
are pleased to report the school was graded GOOD.
The Federation is creating more opportunities for the two schools to share and work to-
gether without losing their individual character. Here’s how they each celebrated Christmas.
Harpley children all took part in a production entitled ‘A Twist in the Tale’ based on
the story of Oliver and performed at the Village Hall. It involved music and drama and
several children sang solos. A high quality performance by all involved.
A raffle held at the performances raised £212 for Action Aid , a charity the school supports.
Both Massingham Primary School &
the Pre-School children took part in a
special service in the Church.
It included traditional carols and a
very lively, polished, presentation of
the Christmas story and traditions.

Walking Backwards to Christmas
With a strong wind to face, the Strollers, like The Goons, might have done better by
walking backwards. But, as the walk on Sunday 6th December was a short one, we man-
aged to complete the walk in good time without anyone being blown away. We were also
spurred on by the thought of the roast dinner that awaited us at the Dabbling Duck.
Our walk took us up Drunken Drove, along Peddars Way until we reached Green Gate
Road and then back into Massingham.
Along the way, one of our group
found an abandoned crash helmet but
we found no sign of the owner or his/
her motor bike. It’s extraordinary what
some people discard!
Having enjoyed our meal, we then had
the excitement of our annual Christ-
mas Quiz. Some of us took it more
seriously than others. For instance in
answer to the question “Where is
Shepherd’s Bush?” (the corner at the
top of Castle Acre Hill), one of our
number wrote something extremely funny but unprintable!
There will be no Strollers in January. Andrew Bickerton
Local Boy Padraig wins a place in the
Norfolk U-13 Hockey Squad After five days of trials at the UEA Sportspark,
Padraig Turner (12) has been selected to join
the Norfolk Under 13 Hockey Squad.
Padraig, who has been a team member of the
King’s Lynn Pelicans for several years, will
be training each week in Norwich with the 21
other squad members before matches start in
April against other counties. It’s a great
achievement for Padraig
who said he was
‘delighted to have been
picked and very grate-
ful to those who have
ferried him to hockey
practice every week.’
Padraig also plays
tennis and is a member
of the West Norfolk
Under 13 Rugby team.
Well done, Pardraig!

Massingham’s Play Park Refurbishment
The application for funding to WREN to refurbish
our play park has been submitted. This followed
consultation with older members of Great Mass-
ingham Youth Club, a survey of all households
through The Mallard and Village Store and a pres-
entation to Great Massingham Parish Council.
The proposal was then shown to Youth Club
members. We received 26 replies from members
in the 9-16 age range with 100% support for up-
grade of equipment for older aged children. 93
households responded with strong support for the
project. Some residents also gave a written re-
sponse of support - many thanks.
If we eventually see a much improved play park
for our young people, the efforts made will be
worthwhile. WREN’s decision is expected in
April 2016. If we are successful, that’s quite a big
“if”, we hope to see the equipment installed in
time for the summer holidays.
Many thanks to everyone who has taken time to
answer our surveys or written a letter. Let’s hope
it is a Happy New Year for our children.
Andrew Bickerton, John Bridger, Liz Foster.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!
Murder Mystery...... It was the Vicar Whodunnit
Over the last weekend of November there was a terrible murder in the Village Hall! In
fact, the same person was done away with twice! However, with the help of over 120
people, the murderer was identified. And, of course, each time it was the vicar.
The Murder Mystery 'Death at the Shangri-la' was
directed by Ann Bowen with a very strong cast, in-
cluding, amongst others, the Mallard's own Gert and
Daisy, Barry Bowen, Rob Burton, Lorna Taylor and
Neil Steed who played the guilty vicar.
Promoted by the Tennis and Multi-sports Club and
sharing the profits with the Village Hall, the combined
profits from the Friday and Saturday evenings
amounted to £1,006. On the Saturday evening, Irene
Allen, Sandy Francis and Ann Bowen provided the
most delicious Cottage Pies and puds, served up by a
number of ‘comely maidens’ from the Tennis Club.
So far as we are aware, no-one died of food poisoning,
which was another fine result.
Many thanks to our actors, our producer, our chefs, to Bruce Riches, Bob Nash and Sue
Kingston for providing behind the scenes support and to Den and Eddie Evans & Harley
Britcher for providing photographs. Thanks to you all for making it such a successful
event. Arthur Allen
