But then I got hold of it, and it has been living on a scruffy farm in West Sussex for the past quarter of a century, so you could say it has suffered something of a comedown in circumstances. ‘When I bought it, it appeared to be very shiny and rust-free, at least from the outside, but that did not tell the whole story. Every Ferrari of this age was constructed using lots of interconnected box sections, which means you have things like double-skin floors. So when condensation forms, the car begins rusting from the inside out. Even though it had been living under all that beautiful Californian sun, the car still required a lot of welding and refabricating work. ‘If you wanted to have similar work carried out today by one of the top specialist restoration companies, you would have to pay around £300,000. But you would have a car that is as good as new or, dare I say it, quite possibly better than new. Given the value of the Lusso today, I don’t tend to drive it on the road that often, but I do enjoy taking it to lots of concours events and shows, and that way other people can appreciate it too. ‘The Lusso is as good to look at as it is to drive, and in my opinion only Italians could have created an object this beautiful. It shares space on the farm with my Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada – another gorgeous Italian car, of course. I am also fortunate enough to own a Series 1 Aston Martin DB4, which is also a truly beautiful car. And who designed the body for that? Touring in Milan, of course!’ DON’T MISS THE OPEN DAY Submissions to display your car at the 2016 GRRC Open Day and Annual Vehicle Display have now closed, and we will shortly be contacting Members whose cars have been selected. However, all Members and their guests are welcome to come along to this free event, held on the Carriage Circle of Goodwood House on Sunday 14 August. 1963 FERRARI 250 GT LUSSO MEET HUGH JAMES, HIS SON NICHOLAS, AND THEIR TRULY EXQUISITE FERRARI ME AND MY CAR Time goes by so fast at Goodwood, and already we’re preparing for the Revival at the Motor Circuit this September. One of the many highlights of the event will be the two-part St Mary’s Trophy for saloon cars, which this year will be a one-make race for the Austin A35. It’ll be a sight to remember – a whole grid of these little ‘jelly beans’ scrabbling for position as they go buzzing into Madgwick on the first lap. In past years we’ve witnessed some heroics as the little cars get in among the more powerful machines, poking their noses into impossible gaps. Former BTCC champion Andrew Jordan, who will share an A35 with his father Mike, has been testing in preparation for what will be a close-fought battle, and you can see a video of his day at the circuit on YouTube or the Goodwood Road & Racing website – it’s sure to whet your appetite for the Revival. The Kinrara Trophy, for pre-1963 Grand Touring cars, will be a brand new addition to this year’s race programme, and it’s an enticing prospect: a grid of some of the most beautiful cars ever built will charge into the dusk on Friday evening for this one-hour race, providing a stunning climax to the opening day of the Revival. The line-up will include such iconic cars as the Aston Martin DB4 GT and Ferrari 250 SWB and GTO – machines which epitomise the halcyon days of GT racing at Goodwood. It’s sure to be a hotly contested battle, with headlights ablaze and brake lights glowing as the sun sets behind St Mary’s corner in the closing stages. There will also be a very special Goodwood Revival tribute to the extraordinary achievements of Sir Jack Brabham, who is still the only man ever to win a Formula 1 World Championship in a car bearing his own name – the V8 Repco-powered Brabham BT20. Three times a World Champion, twice for Cooper in 1959 and ’60, and with his own Brabham team in 1966, Jack was not only a tough and talented driver but also a gifted engineer. Working with fellow Australian Ron Tauranac, he also dominated Formula 2 with his Brabham-Hondas, providing hundreds of customers with winning cars. Jack’s remarkable career – which included memorable appearances at the Goodwood Motor Circuit – will be celebrated with a collection of cars he raced through the 1950s and ’60s. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

As we reflect on another Festival of Speed, I’m aware that conditions on the ground caused some frustration, so I’d

like to thank you all for your patience and undiminished enthusiasm. Many of you

will know that a road accident at Kennels Gate disrupted traffic flow on the

Saturday morning and led to some long delays, for which we can only apologise.

On a more positive note, BMW’s decision to celebrate its centenary with us

contributed hugely to this year’s Festival, from the Central Feature in front of the House to the amazing array of cars and

motorcycles on the Hill. Those of you who came to the GRRC Ball on Thursday will have seen the sculpture being revealed in spectacular fashion – certainly the most

exciting display we’ve staged so far.

Once again, the American racers entertained us all with some memorable

tyre-smoking runs on the Hill. The highlights, for me, were Mike Skinner’s electrifying run in his NASCAR truck,

and Richard Childress, the first NASCAR team owner to come to the Festival, who prepared his car specially for the event.

It’s always so good to see the F1 drivers. Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg were terrific (and enjoyed hooking up with

Hollywood star Keanu Reeves), as well as Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi and

Riccardo Patrese. Not to mention the drifters Mike Whiddett and Ken Block.

Now we all look forward to the Revival. For me, the Revival is a very special event as it reminds us all of the very beginnings of motorsport at Goodwood. This year we have new races (see page 1) and a tribute

to Jack Brabham, who not only raced here in the 1960s but also drove at both

the Revival and the Festival.

I look forward to seeing you all in September.

SERGIO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE DESIGN OF FORMULA 1 CARS FOR

WILLIAMS, BRABHAM, BENETTON AND SAUBER AMONG OTHERS. HE NOW RUNS HIS OWN DESIGN AND

ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY, ASTAUTO LTD

When did you join the GRRC?I was living in America working for Dan Gurney when the Festival started in 1993, but when I moved back to

England in 1998 I decided to join.

What is the appeal of Goodwood for you?Goodwood brings a smile to my face every year, and it takes many months before that smile goes away. The events remind me why I fell in love with the automobile and motorsport. When I was a child in Argentina I used to sit by the road and wait for a car to come by. If it was

one I liked, I would run indoors and draw it.

How did racing become part of your life? There was always a passion for racing in Argentina, with the Grand Prix and the Temporada series. I used to follow Fangio and González, and the big road races used to pass through my town, so I spent hours looking at all of the cars we never saw anywhere else. Like any kid, I wanted to race, and my heroes were Jack Brabham, Jim Hall and Bruce McLaren because they were engineers as well as drivers – they knew their cars intimately. But unfortunately I never had the money to

get behind the wheel and race myself.

When did you decide to come over to Europe? When I was a teenager in high school, it was always my ambition. When I graduated as an engineer my father bought me a ticket to come to England. I’d met a lot of racing people, had worked with the Chrysler F2 team, but my visa only lasted for two months, so I went back in 1980, with a local Formula 3 driver as his race engineer. When he got a works drive, Steve Hollman at PRS gave me a job as a mechanic, and after I’d redesigned most of the car he made me Chief Designer. We then went on to win the Formula Ford title

with Stefan Bellof.

How did you get into Formula 1?I was working for Ron Tauranac at Ralt and was offered a job by John MacDonald at RAM – that was where it all began. Then in 1986 I went to Williams, working with Patrick Head on the FW11, and from there to Brabham, where I designed the turbocharged BT56, and remained there until the team closed in 1991. Seeing my cars running up the Hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is fantastic: the Brabhams, the RAM 03 from 1985, which I designed with Gustav Brunner – I didn’t know that still existed. Perhaps my best memory is the Fondmetal GR02, the first F1 car I designed after setting up my own consultancy in 1992. That was actually a very good car with a lot of promise, but the team ran out of money and had to withdraw from F1.

What are you working on these days?My consultancy has been involved in a wide range of engineering disciplines, but now works mainly on electric and hybrid vehicles. We are also involved in

simulator services for many different types of cars.

What do you drive at the moment?A 5 Series BMW turbodiesel. I’ve been driving 5 Series cars for 25 years because they are fast, comfortable and practical. If I could have any road car it would have to be the BMW i8 hybrid sports car, as I really admire

the technology that goes into it.

We are delighted to offer GRRC Members the opportunity to join us at Silverstone on Monday 17 October for a track day organised in conjunction with RMA. We will use the ‘Heritage’ pit lane and experience the full GP circuit alongside RMA Members. The noise restriction for the day is set at 105dB. The day will begin with registration and a briefing at 0800hrs, followed by 15 minutes of track familiarisation before the day begins in earnest. The morning session will run until 1300hrs, when we’ll take a break for lunch before heading back onto the track, and you are very welcome to bring additional drivers, passengers or spectators should you wish. The day will conclude at 1700hrs. We very much hope you will join us for what promises to be an excellent day on one of the finest GP circuits in the world. The price of the day is £350, with additional drivers, passengers, instruction, pit garages and accommodation available at extra cost. To book your place, please return the enclosed form to Chloe Fernandez at [email protected]

FULL-THROTTLE FUN ON THE HILLAs Lord March mentioned (see left), some unseasonable weather presented a few challenges at this year’s Festival of Speed – but the British summer failed to dampen your spirits and enthusiasm in our two enclosures, the Kinrara and main GRRC Enclosure.

‘This year we introduced some exclusive benefits which I know many of you enjoyed,’ reports GRRC Manager Alan Brewer. ‘Lord March and I have been working hard to create the best possible experience for Members at the Festival of Speed. We are keen to work closely with our partners, and this year I know some of you enjoyed getting involved in the Audi off-roading and the opening of the Jaguar Land Rover exhibition stand. We are in the process of planning more of these special benefits with more of our partners in the future.’

The 2016 Festival was another memorable feast for the eyes and ears – so many great cars and bikes, plus a guest appearance from Hollywood star Keanu Reeves. ‘An awesome experience, such a fantastic event, I loved it all,’ said Keanu. We agree, and hope you do too.
