Goodwood Primary has a focus in Science, not only through our great Goody Patch program but also across the curriculum. Last week was an amazing

week affirming the school’s and communities commitment. The preschool made slime thanks to Luke Faulkner and congratulations to Catherine Murch and Bec Anderson for coordinating the lunch time activities. Many thanks also goes to the other staff and parents who made it all happen in the courtyard. It was fabulous to see teachers, students and parents all actively engaged in such an important area of the curriculum. Your child’s future life is going to depend on us having scientists to ensure the complex global issues we face can be

addressed.

A dazzling Book Week parade got our celebrations off to a great start.

A commitment to how adults treat each other at Goodwood School. At the beginning of the year staff spent time exploring norms of behaviour for how we treat each other. These were also considered by the Governing Council, our parent representative

body. After consultation we now have 5 expected behaviours adults will adhere to when at Goodwood School: Listen and consider other people’s opinions and share

yours respectfully and appropriately.

Collaborate to help and support each other. Punctual behaviour respects other people’s time. Allow people to have the opportunity to contribute

in a safe environment and a constructive manner. Acknowledge individual and group contributions.

Handwriting Tips In week 3 staff were involved in training about handwriting by an Occupational Therapist, Daryl Kerr. Daryl provided us with information about a child’s developmental readiness and stages in terms of promoting effective habits for handwriting. Many children of all ages have developed bad habits. Often this is linked to motor processing issues. Daryl provided preschool to year 7 staff possible interventions for gross motor skills, sensory processing, visual perception, fine motor skills, planning and organisation, alertness and attention, postural stability and

control, written expression and school readiness.

RAN TRAINING for volunteers Those volunteers parents who have indicated they will be attending this training it will be held in the library. Please be there at 9am sharp. Refreshments will be provided.

Kind regards, Deb Brassington

Principal

UNIFORM SHOP VOLUNTEER REQUIRED - Can you help?? Our uniform shop provides a great service for the community and it is run entirely by volunteers. However, one of our regular helpful contributors is unable to help out any longer due to other work commitments.

Out of Hours Goodwood Primary Sport ...Chant and Mascot

Here is the chant chosen last year for students to use when they play sport. The students also chose a Goanna as a mascot.

A design of a Goanna is needed and the parents who run the sport suggested students put in designs. If you would like to put in a design for a Goanna, that can then be printed up and used to promote Goodwood.

Please give your design into the front office by Wednesday September 9th. Parents and staff on the Out of Hours Sports Committee will choose a final design.

Please help out in Goodwood Primary School’s

North Yard Working Bee - Sunday 30th August 9am-12pm

The North Unit students had a fantastic time at their Movie Night a few weeks ago. Everyone looked great dressed up in their pyjamas! We watched ‘Over the Hedge’ and all had a good laugh. The night was also a great success financially, raising $497! This money will be vital in establishing a mud kitchen play area for the students of Goodwood Primary School.

Our Junior Primary teachers have been involved in a number of Professional Development sessions this year, discovering some ways to develop children’s resilience, problem solving, risk taking and creativity through Nature Play. We would love for you to be involved in the creation of the Mud Kitchen.

We are looking for donations of old cooking utensils (pots and pans, spoons etc.), terracotta pots (for a herb garden) and any drought resistant plants.

On the working bee day, we will need wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, electric drills and electric belt sanders.

If you are interested in some resources and ideas for home, Nature Play SA is a wonderful organisation to look into.

Great Achievements at Goodwood!

Courtyard Science Courtyard science a huge success!

I would like to thank all staff and students who participated in this frantic but fun week of science. In particular I would like to thank the parent/grandparent volunteers who gave up time in the middle of their day to help supervise the activities and talk science with the students…

Thanks to: Rebecca Anderson Bec Campbell Vanessa Rowe Lan Kelly Helen Barter Rosh and Andre Amrein Chris McDevitt Noelle Vadim Zolotaryov Susanne Bertram Michelle Stead Ian Richo

What fantastic support, thank you, Catherine Murch

Riley and Mim were our journalists during Science Week and captured the excitement of participants…

All children interviewed would love to have an event like this again.

‘If you shine lots of light together you get white.’ - Jasmine

‘This is a very good idea because you get to explore different science things.’ - Tanya

‘We had to decide with our team where the mirrors would go. I learnt that you can reflect light from any angle.’ - Ethan

‘This is fun because I can do all different experiments and have fun while learning.’ - Lucy

Zoe was involved in the reflecting and refracting experiment. She said: ‘I’ve enjoyed doing things with different coloured

lights. It was hard to work out how to get the light to bend!’

‘I loved learning about light!’ - Misandi

‘I have learnt how bubbles pop. I’m having lots of fun learning things about bubbles.’ - Noah

‘I had fun playing the car game because my car kept falling off the road.’ - Ruby

Great Achievements at Goodwood!

Courtyard Science continued...

Preschool Science had students and teachers all thinking ... This week is Science Week and we invited Milenka’s dad, Luke to come and speak to us. We learnt about fossils and what they can tell us about the time on earth before we were here. Before dinosaurs there were plants and the plants made oxygen. Luke showed us fossils and we were able to hold them and look carefully at them. We looked through microscopes to see very small things. When looking through the microscope Kiaan said, ‘It looks like a meteor shower.’ Naman said, “That’s the first time I’ve seen a microscope.” Luke then made us slime! The slime was great fun to play with. Thank you Luke!

Great Achievements at Goodwood!

Italian Students shared their recent work in Italian with Deb. They were very proud of their research on Italy and commented on the approach to learning they were able to use: ‘We were able to work independently’ ‘We practiced our mapping skills’ ‘We could be creative’ ‘We chose how we would present the information we learnt.’ ‘We could work on it at school or at home.’

Witchetty Grubs … Hmmm!!!

On Tuesday 28th

July Matilda Spier’s grandparents, Paul and Ann Eckert, brought maku (witchetty grubs) to show the class. It was fascinating to see how the maku were tucked away in the hollow part of roots. They were incredibly wriggly in the pitty (wooden bowl), and we watched in amusement and apprehension as they tried to crawl out! As they sizzled in a pan, and gradually stopped moving, their colour changed from white to toasty brown. Many of us were very brave and placed a segment on our tongues and then in our mouths. We thought they tasted like a combination of scrambled eggs and corn. (6M)

MAKU Squishy! Squirmy! My heart was racing fast as I went to put it in my mouth! Chewy! Stringy! Why would anybody eat them? It tastes like wet grass. What if they didn’t cook it … EEEWWW! What if you ate it whole and it turned into a moth in your stomach!

Year 7 expo of learning through literature It was wonderful to see students and staff enjoying the year 7’s book week showcase. The detail and quality of their dioramas and trioramas gave all of us great insight into the books they had read.
