Teachers appreciated catching up with you. It was fabulous to see so many of you join us for the informal pizza catch up in the north yard. We have had a great response with regards volunteers for our Governing Council sub-committees. Goodwood Primary’s community always blows me away with regards our parents commitment to making our school the best possible place to be. Many hands make light work and we certainly have many hands so thank you!! Their music and dancing was appreciated by all. Writing Focus The connections between being a strong writer and reader are clear. We plan to broaden the range of texts that students access and read. We are aiming for all students to 'read like a writer'. To support this Nikki is engaging with Early Years classes for story telling. Community and connection across the whole site All of our classes have been paired up for our Buddy Class program. This program provides the opportunity for older and younger students to develop authentic purposeful relationships. Here are 19E students hanging out with our Preschool children. Our commitment to facilitating programs like this ensures positive relationships between children and that a culture of respect and collaboration exists at Goodwood. For example, at a recent parent tour new parents to our school commented on a very positive action towards their child. Their child was sitting alone in the yard and some older children came up and said: ‘Hi, are you new to Goodwood?’ The child said ‘Yes’. The other child then asked, ‘Do you want to join us? We are just hanging out over here” (pointing to where their friends were). While their child declined the offer the older child then responded with, ’No worries, we hang over there most days, so you can find us if you ever want.’ The parent said it was a wonderful experience for their child. Looking out for community members isn’t restricted to school. I recently received this email and felt compelled to share it with you: I am a resident in Victoria Street Goodwood. Before heading off to work this morning I received a call from one of your students. I’m guessing he and his companion are possibly Year 6-ish students. It seems our pet dog Baxter did an escape act onto the road. The boys obviously encountered Baxter and they showed enormous maturity in checking his tag on which our phone numbers were engraved. They called me advising me of their location and to top it off, they encouraged me “not to get stressed” as they committed to remaining with Baxter until I arrived. I didn’t get the names of the boys but they will know who they are. The school community and their parents should be proud of these quick-thinking and caring young fellows. My sincere thanks to them once again. Jeff Congratulations to our Luke and Dan from who were the students who helped Jeff. I feel blessed to be Principal of Goodwood and our caring community.

Writing Focus The connections between being a

strong writer and reader are clear.

Celebrating Student Achievements I love it when children come to visit and share their learning. This week 18N children came to share their guided reading work and confidently read their work to me.

Wandering around the school there are always surprises. Last week in Graeme’s and Kate’s classes students had started their investigations into forces and interesting constructions were being created. Earlier this term 4M and 5M certainly enjoyed getting messy and thinking carefully about the technology and engineering behind constructing their letters.

Student Leadership The year 4/5 to year 7 teachers and leadership have reviewed our student leadership program. There will now be two components to student leadership opportunities across the school. There will be groups of students who engage in activities/ jobs around the school in their own time. These are: Assemblies: setting up and managing technology at assemblies, Canteen (year 7’s only): helping serve at recess and lunch; Library: monitors to manage student borrowing and tidying of the library; Promotion Team (year 7’s only): school tours for parents and other official visitors; Lost

Property: managing the huge amount of lost clothing and items we generate in the school. Students had to apply for these positions and demonstrate their experience and skills associated with the roles. Students will be notified early next week if they have been successful. The other aspect to leadership is linked to how our students at Goodwood are very adept at taking up and following projects they are passionate about. For example taking initiative to raise money for a charity or making a difference at our school like, stopping the use of plastic straws at our canteen.

Fortnightly, on Wednesday afternoons, the 4/5 to 6/7 classes will have time to explore topics they are passionate

about. In groups they will develop plans of action to be submitted to staff. This will enable more children to be involved. During the fortnightly Wednesday afternoon time children will follow these passion projects. We envisage this will engage students more as their

project will be an Inquiry of their choice. All classes have regular class meetings and often leadership projects Reception to year 7 evolve. For example, last year we had year 1/2 children promoting recycling and stopping the use of soft plastics. Our Inquiry learning also lends itself to many leadership opportunities throughout the school day.

Important Community Events While we no longer publish important dates in the newsletter I do want to make mention of some important events coming up, later this term. These events are always great fun because of the level of participation by students, parents and staff. Harmony Day, on Thursday the 21st of March, begins with a cultural breakfast followed by cultural and collaborative workshops for students, see the article in this Newsletter. I encourage parents to join in and offer to run a workshop for

a small group of students. The theme for Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. As a result of the many volunteers, who commit many hours to Goodwood, we have a reputation for our sense of community. Our 2018 volunteer award will be presented at this years Harmony Day breakfast, acknowledging two community members who have had a huge influence in connecting our school community to the wider Goodwood community. Sports Day Wednesday 3rd of April. This is always a great event where our children have the best fun and test their physical skills. I go on leave for the next two weeks. Steve and I are going to New Zealand. While I am away Nikki will be acting Principal. A number of staff will be released over the two weeks to work on leadership tasks supporting Nikki, Mike and Liam.

Kind regards Deb Brassington Principal

Important Notices

Harmony Day Thursday the 21st of March is Harmony Day, which celebrates the country’s cultural diversity and reinforces the importance of

inclusiveness to all Australians with the theme “Everyone belongs” Harmony Day was run very successfully at Goodwood Primary in 2018. The Student Learning and Wellbeing Committee initiated community-run sessions exploring the diversity of culture at Goodwood and we would like to continue this in 2019. Parents and community members with teacher support, will run 45-minute activities that showcase an aspect of a particular culture. If you have a special skill, know a great game, can tell a story or teach a craft, and you would like to share that with a small group of students please consider volunteering. We are happy to

support with ideas for your workshop. If you have younger children with you, they are welcome to join in your activity. Please contact Mike Delean on [email protected] by 27th February and we will schedule you in!

Swimming Students in selected classes will be attending swimming lessons for a full week in term 1 as a mandatory part of our Physical Education Curriculum. These classes are: 18N/ 1M/ 2M/ 4M/ 5M/ 12C/ 19E & 8M (year 5 students only) This year these classes will be swimming in week 6 (4th – 8th March) at the Unley Swimming Centre, Forestville. All other classes (14N/ 15N/ 17N/ 13N & 16N) will be swimming during weeks 4 and 5 in term 4. More information will be sent out to you later in the year. All lessons are one hour long and notes and consent forms have been sent home.

There are some important requirements that parents are requested to attend to and understand prior to week 6. These include: Due to child protection requirements adults are unable to be supervising in change-rooms unless they have a current criminal history screening. Therefore it is important that all children start practising these skills if they don’t already manage dressing independently. Parents are allowed to dry and help their own child change but are not allowed into the change rooms (without the screening) so this is why children need to practise these skills. Assistance can be provided with shoes and socks. If you would like to accompany your child’s class to the pool and support the teacher, this would be extremely helpful. However, we do ask that you do not also have responsibility for a younger sibling and/or take this time to swim during the swimming lessons.

If you indicate your child has a medical issue, the swimming centre will insist on a health care plan from the doctor. If you do not provide this, your child will NOT be able to attend swimming lessons. Thank you in advance for your support with this busy and important time of year.
