Goodyear Ski Club
SKI NEWS April 2019
Officer Reports
President – Rick Beagle
I hope everyone had a great ski season; our two trips out West were
great. We’re looking at Big Sky, Vail, Telluride or Sun Valley for 2020.
April means elections for Vice President, Treasurer and Officer in
Charge of Marketing. If you want to help your club, show up at the
meeting. There are responsibilities that go with these positions, but we
officers are willing to help.
VP/Social – Mary Beth Grether
We already miss Tom Nemcheck, but we know he is with us in spirit.
We appreciate members stepping up to set up several social events.
April 27 is our Western mystery “Murder at the Black Diamond
Saloon”. Don’t miss out; sign up now. We still need a few people to
play active roles. See the flyer on page 4 for details. The event will go
out on Meetup so other ski clubs can come and participate.
Since we have no meetings in the summer, come join GSC on Tuesday
evenings starting in June as we participate in the Summit Brew Path.
• The Mamma Mia! dinner and show is June 22. See page 6.
• A wine social at Red Horse Winery is in the works (date TBD).
July 13 is our Golf Social at Spring Hills Golf Course. Our event is
limited to 20 golfers, so sign up early. We will have more of a social
time after the golf. See the flyer on page 7 for details. You can come
and just enjoy the dinner and social, but golf is more fun.
• Betty Wise will host a wine social at Sarah’s Vineyard on July 18.
• The GSC annual picnic is scheduled for August 4 at Wingfoot Lake.
Other upcoming events to look forward to include a Rubber Ducks
baseball game, kayaking, hiking, and bike riding.

Foodbank
Another great volunteer session at the Akron-
Canton Foodbank. We sorted through cosmetic type
items. We had Flo Fiehn, Mary Ann Betz, Bonnie
Schaaf, Randy and Mary Beth Grether, Cheryl Gray,
and Cheryl’s niece and friend who are regulars at
the Foodbank. We sorted, cleaned and taped 450
pounds of cosmetics, hair products, soaps and
other personal care items. This is equivalent to 375
meals. Who said something about food? We went to
the Family Restaurant in Akron for a good lunch
and more conversation. We will volunteer again in
June. See the next newsletter for details.
Meetup
Please join the CMSC Meetup group (it’s not hard.) There are over 800 members. CMSC, Fagowees, Hi
Rise and others use it to reach out for ski trips, meetings and social events. Here is the link to the CMSC
Meetup page: https://www.meetup.com/Cleveland-Metro-Ski-Council/.
Meetup is a program where you can find people with common interests. This one just happens to be for
skiers. There are meetups if you like to hike, knit, photograph, and Linda, they even have one for Yarn
Hoarders Anonymous. You can find a Meetup group for just about anything.
I will post the Murder Mystery on the CMSC Meetup so other ski clubs may attend.

Since we have no meetings during the summer, come join GSC on Tuesday evenings as we participate in
the Summit Brew Path. Get your passport at any of the 22 participating breweries and get a stamp as you
visit each of them. We will meet at a different brewery each Tuesday, so you are not drinking alone. We’ll
begin June 4. You can get your passport then or start now (official start was March 23). If you miss a
Tuesday, you can make it up anytime. Visit https://www.summitbrewpath.com/ for more information.
First is #10 Lock 15 Brewing Co. on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 PM. Randy Grether will be your host
for that night. Lock 15 Brewing Co., 21 W. North Street, Akron, is in the Cascade Lofts apartment building
on the corner of North and Howard. The parking lot entrance is on Howard St.
Save the following nine breweries to visit with GSC; they are
open on Tuesdays. We will plan to visit them during June and
July. Look for the full schedule in the May newsletter.

attend the show, but you must purchase your own tickets at the box office.

Steamboat Springs – Linda Slicker
On a very windy Sunday, February 24,
thirty-two excited skiers arrived at the
Cleveland airport. As we boarded the
plane, all the aisle and windows seats
were taken. Most of us ended up in the
rear of the plane scattered among the Air
Force hockey team returning home. Some
people felt safe since we were surrounded
by strong young men. The windy
conditions delayed our take-off for 40
minutes. We experienced many bumps,
and the captain kept the seat belt light on
for quite some time. We did arrive in
Denver safely. We boarded the train to
take us to baggage claim. I’m glad to
report that all the luggage was delivered;
however, I believe Eric Young’s suitcase
was missing a wheel.
We boarded the bus, and we were on our
way to Steamboat. We stopped for about
an hour at Apple Jack’s, King Sooper, and
varied eating establishments. People
purchased groceries, alcohol, and lunch
or dinner for the long bus ride. Mary Beth
supplied entertainment with the video
from our Park City trip and a movie.
We arrived at The Ranch at Steamboat
around 7 PM Mountain time. We were
shuttled to our condo units. I believe
everyone just unpacked and went to bed
from the long day of travel.
Our first two days were sunny “bluebird”
days. The snow conditions were great.
Some people took the mountain tours to
familiarize themselves with the area. One
of the unique features of Steamboat is
the Morningside Park on the back side of
the mountain. As you are going up the
lift, if you hold out your hand, birds will
sweep down to get food. This area has
some nice runs through the trees.
Wednesday we had some fresh snow. Thursday morning was foggy, but it cleared up a bit. In the
afternoon it turned cloudy with the oncoming snow clouds.
9
Tuesday night we had our mid-week party in the conference room below the office. I ordered the food
from Moe’s Original Barbecue. We had pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked ribs, marinated slaw, baked
beans, mac & and cheese, sweet potato casserole along with buns and cornbread. There was plenty of
food. We were joined by Judy and Warren Ripple, Esther DeTray, and Judy Fordyce (from Chagrin Valley
Ski Club). We sent a plate of food back to the condo for her husband Larry since he was not feeling well.
Thanks to Judy and Warren for supplying some wine. We went around the room, with people introducing
themselves and sharing how they signed up for the trip if new to the club or sharing their involvement
with Goodyear Ski Club. There was so much food that Cheryl and I hosted a “clean out your condo” party
on Thursday night. About two-thirds of the group attended. Some couples had made prior arrangements
for a sleigh ride dinner on the mountain, and others just wanted to go downtown one more time.
Friday morning, it was snowing for our trip back to Denver. The bus did slip a few times trying to stop
coming down the hill out of Steamboat. The trip to Denver was not an easy one, but the pass was open
even with the snow. Also, there was a lot of traffic since it was the start of the weekend.
All in all, it was a great trip with no serious injuries. I want to thank everyone for their cooperation,
making my job easy. I think we had a great group. I look forward to seeing all of you on trips in the
future.
We even had a celebrity on the trip – Mr. Speedo.
