Gorilla Class Spring Term 1 2020 Theme: Back to the Future– The Tudors Curriculum Information for Parents ENGLISH In English we will study two texts. The first one My Friend Walterwritten by Michael Morpurgo is about a girls encounter with the ghost of Sir Walter Raleigh, so it links close- ly with our Tudor theme. Through studying the book, children will have the opportunity to write a non-chronological report, an infor- mal letter, a descriptive passage, a newspa- per report and a recount. The second text is A Midsummer Nights Dream, a play written by Shakespeare. The children will have opportunities to take part in drama activities as well as write their own stories, retell parts of the play and write a set of instructions. Children will continue to learn grammar through daily English lessons and will have regular stand alone guided reading and spelling sessions. MATHS In number, we will be multiplying and dividing fractions as well as revisiting finding a frac- tion and percentage of a quantity. In algebra, the class will learn how to interpret and solve number sequences; reason about missing num- bers and the year 6’s will be looking in depth at formulas and equations. We will also focus on ratio and proportion. In geometry, we will plot shapes on a co- ordinate grid and transform them through reflections and translations. Finally, in statis- tics, we will interpret data in tables and graphs and the year 6’s will calculate the mean average. Through daily mental and oral starters we will revisit topics such as: order- ing, rounding and x and ÷ by 10, 100 and 1000. The children will continue to have opportuni- ties to practise their times table knowledge on TT Rockstars. Foundation Subjects In Science, we will be studying teeth and the digestive system. We will learn about the different types of teeth and their function as well as discuss how to look after them. We will name the parts of the body associated with the digestive system and understand the role they play. We will also look at other animalsdiets and create food chains. In music, we will listen to and appraise Tudor music and, in response, compose our own fanfare. We will also learn to play Tudor nursery rhymes on both the recorder and glockenspiel and in PE, we will learn and choreo- graph our own Tudor dances. In History we will learn about the reformation of the Church; Henry VIIIs wives as well as generate and answer our own research questions. Map work related to the Spanish Armada in Geography and in Art, children will produce their own famous Tudor portrait as well as a famous Tudor Face Swap using materials. RE learning will centre around reading and comparing different faithsCreation Stories. E-safety will be part of learning in Computing and in PSHE, children will learn about the process of decision-making; identifying their own strengths and relating this to potential careers. Other Information PE will take place on a Monday and Friday. Homework will be sent out on a Thursday and needs to be handed back in on a Tuesday.
