Introducing: Harlem Fashion Row

Harlem Fashion Row (HFR) is a significant organiza-tion that connects audiences with emerging designersof color in Fashion. HFRʼs mission is to ʻdiscover andshowcase emerging talent of color through a platformof national events and customized multi-platform pro-gramsʼ.I had a chance to not only attend but to host the Fall2013 Fashion Week Fashion Show. The event washeld at the world famous Apollo Theater in HarlemNew York and was presented by Smart Water. TheFashion show gave a chance for 7 emerging design-ers of color to showcase their collection to a support-ive audience, which included expert fashion insidersDesigners Deidre Jefferies, Evelyn Lambert, ChantellWalters, Kimberly Goldson, Sandro Romans,Shauntele and Kahindo Mateene were also compet-ing for a chance to be selected to showcase theirspring/ summer ʻ14ʼ collection in September. Therewas a proficient panel of judges that included FashionIcon Bethann Hardison and Actor/ Model Tyson Beck-ford. The audience also got a chance to vote for whothey felt should come back. The four designers thatwere choosen were:

Brooklyn born and raised Kimberly Goldson who hasalso been on Project Runway.

DC based Deidre Jefferies who has a spy inspired linecalled Espion

Sandro Romans who has a menʼs line that has anedgy urban feel.

Kahindo Mateene uses African influence prints to cre-ate her line Modahnik.

We got a chance to sit down with Espion DesignerDeidre Jefferies and ask her a few questions...

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM AND HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOURCOLOR PALETTE:

The deepest part of my inspiration is the "superwoman" inside all of us. The many roles we play, theamazing feats we have to perform to manage our daily lives & everyone else's. It's fascinating thatwe look so put together while saving the world.

I create my designs & choose my color palette solely on what it is I would like to wear personallyfor the next season. ESPION is my dream wardrobe.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER AND WHY:

My favorite designer right now is Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. He gives everything to his collectionsand the end result is always next level.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CRAZY PARTY TRICKS YOU CAN DO:

No party tricks but I love to host my family & friends. I make a mean roasted asparagus wrapped insmoked salmon & and my white sangria usually kicks the party up a notch... or two.

HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU GOT THE NEWS YOU HAD BEEN SELECTED FOR SEPT.:

I was so excited and feeling really blessed! Each of the designers were very talented, so I felt hon-ored to have been selected. That was the best news!!!

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU FOR SPRING '14' COLLECTION:

This will be my first spring collection, so I want to put forth something that even surprises me. I al-ways start with a sophisticated palette, but I have a feeling it will end up electric!

Stay up to date with the movement by following them on facebook.

Q: What are some must haves for Prom this season?DB:DB: Must haves for Prom are spark-ly shoes. I have talked about that on “My Look of the Week” show. I also talked about how you could put your hair up with cute accessories and different handbag ideas in that episode.

Q: What are some of the hottest trends for teens this spring?DB: Some of the hottest trends are pale pastel colors, black and white geometric patterns. I especially love the trend of lucite (clear) accesso-ries.

Q: Is it ok to wear dark and bold colors in the spring?DB: Yes. Absolutely. It’s very mod and a really popular trend aka color-blocking. I also think that black with white is very chic in any season.

Meet Face Mentor:Naomi Cambell

What has been your favorite part of being a coach on TheFace?Iʼve really enjoyed mentoring my contestants on “The Face.”Iʼve taken all of the lessons that I learned from my 27 years inthe industry, and shared them with my girls in order to helpthem grow and succeed. I am very aware that I have the poten-tial to change these girlsʼ lives by putting them on the right pathand launching them into the world of fashion. I take my role ascoach very seriously.

Being in the industry for a while, how do you think the in-dustry is different from when you started? The modeling industry is certainly more corporate than it wasyears ago. There are lots of great things that have not changedover the years – itʼs still an exciting industry with lots of talentedmodels and genius designers, and the thrill and adrenalin rushof the runway still exists!

Out of the 3 contestants that you have left on your team, isthere a front runner that you think could win the competi-tion?I think all of my remaining contestants are very strong, and allhave the chance to become the next face of Ulta Beauty. Youʼllhave to tune in to see who wins!

What is some of the best advice you have given your teamthat helped them through the competition?Iʼm very honest and Iʼm quite tough with my girls. I wonʼt bewith them to hold their hands as they go through castings, so Ipraise them when they do things great and coach them to helpthem improve. And when they do something thatʼs not quiteright, I guide them and give them feedback and suggest newways to do things. I want to help them grow and improve.

Do you enjoy working with a contestant that has experi-ence as a model or one who is new to the game and hasroom to mold into a great model? Each girl is different and each girl has her own unique qualities.I enjoy working with experienced models as well as newcomers.

Meredith also recorded the original song for the movie, “Red Head Randy” called “the Game” about bullying. She sings because of her training as a child that once made her stand out. She can model be-cause of her unique apperance that was once mocked and she can speak about it because she overcame the pain of bullying and she decided to make it her mission to help other come to their empower-ing realizations. Her next project is set to be about anti-bullying.

Meredith’s music career is taking off as well. Recentlly, she recorded and shot a music video of her new song, “Celebrity.” That was the first song she every wrote. It became an over night success reaching over 1 million views on Youtube. She started being appapproached by bloggers, news shows and many people wanting to write a story about it. She was so excited about her success but with every ex-citement comes dissapointment. She started receiving hate comments on the song and just as it started going viral, it was taken down by Youtube. She thought her career was over but it’s back up on YouTube and fans are looking forward to more music!

Vanessa is so poised as she showed up to the LA set for our cover shoot. “...Fashion is a different business and when it comes to red carpet

events, it really is like a business

””

411: What is it like working on the set of “Switched at Birth”?VM: I love it, all the actors and the crew get along really well and I think we’re all really happy to have a job and we want to give it our all.

4411: How would you describe your character, is she anything like you?VMVM: We’re very different, VERY differ-ent. The way we approach people is very different. The only thing similar obviously since I’m playing her and you have to put a little of yourself into your character, I would say our humor is similar.

411: In the episode “Uprising”, what was it like doing an entire episode in sign language? (ASL)VM: It was very difficult, especially for those who aren’t fluent in the language. I mean you’re watching a scene that a lot of people didn’t know what was going on.

4411: Did you know sign language before Switched at Birth?VM: Nope not at all! There’s so much from this show that I found that I was doing wrong. 411: How do you feel about reality TV, do you think it takes away from the actors of the world?VM:VM: A lot of people have that point of view but I’m actually a fan of reality TV because I think it made television better.

But then again if it’s that good, it won’t survive because people won’t always want to be watching reality television. Whereas, I think Home-land and New Girl, all those shows that are so good right now, really raise the bar. I think that is more likely to survive because the cast is likely to survive because the cast is that much better.

411:Being an actress, you were homeschooled, what do you think are the pros and cons of that?VM:VM: Oh, I loved being homeschooled. The only reason I loved being homeschooled was because I was an actress but I think even if I wasn’t an actress, I would still love being homeschooled. I’m a control freak and being homeschooled gave me a lot of freedom and control of where I was at. I think I would have hated regular at. I think I would have hated regular school. I found it much better working with like 40 year olds and that’s probably very strange {laughs} but nevertheless, I loved it!

411: Being an actress on a cable network, how do you think it’s changed since the writers strike?VM: It changed a lot. For example, Pilot Season, it’s kind of pilot season all year round. That was part of the reason that I think reality TV became so popular be-cause there was a shortage of people writ-ing.

411: Would you say your fashion is like Bay?VM: Well, first I think Bay and I are very similar in that we both like the dark theme. I wear a lot of black in my real life as well. That’s how we are similar but then there’s also a lot more of skirts hap-pening and crazy layering. I’ve always wanted to wear dresses in my everyday life which I never could do but it looks life which I never could do but it looks cute on television, so I guess I can try that for real. {laughs}

411: Do you enjoy dressing up for red car-pets, working with a stylist and being in the Hollywood limelight? VM: Ha. {laughs} there’s pros and cons to it, I think fashion is a dif-ferent business and I think when it comes to red carpet events it really is like a business. There’s definitely a lot of people breath-ing down your necks to make sure you’re wearing what they want you to be wearing. It’s not necessarily going to be what you want to be wearing but there is a fun part to it. I remember one time, I went to this event and it was kind of a big deal and I total-ly got forced into wearing this thing that I totally didn’t want to wear but everyone else in the entire world was saying that this was a good idea for me to wear it, so I had to wear it and I hated it the entire time. So, that’s the con to it. I do like to dress up, I con to it. I do like to dress up, I like dresses, I do like fashion. I like wearing heels. That aspect of it, I do like. 411

Actor’s Spotlight ...

Natalie Dreyfuss411: What drew you to your character Chloe on The Secret Life of the American Teenager?ND:ND: Chloe is the kind of girl that will bounce back no matter what has hap-pened to her. I love that in a character. She doesn't wallow in sadness she pushes through and finds a way. 411: What would you say is your favorite to do… TV series or Movies?ND: I like television. It's fast and keeps you on your toes. My favorite tv shows are comedies, especially ones you can shoot in front of a live audience. 411: Who have you enjoyed working with the most?ND: ND: On Secret Life I got to work with Ken Baumann a lot and I have been friends with him for years. It's always fun when you know each other and then get to play siblings. 411: What is a day like on set for you?ND: ND: It's a lot of waiting. I think people don't realize how much you sit and wait. There are so many people working to make the project happen it takes time.

411: Would you say you are a lot like your character Chloe or complete opposites and why?ND:ND: I'm spunky and outgoing like Chloe, but we definitely have had different lives. She has a lot of damage from her past that I am lucky I didn't experience. 4411: How would you describe your characters fashion compared to your own?ND: ND: When we first see Chloe on the show she is wearing her "work clothes". They are very promiscu-ous. I never dress like that. Later in the show when she is adopted, she dresses more like a normal teen. I dress a little less formal than that in life but still girlie. life but still girlie. f there were one item of clothing you could take with you from set what would it be?I had these awesome ballet flats by Sam Edelman that I got to wear on set. Haley Pullos 411: How would you describe your character on “General Hospital?HP: HP: Molly is an innocent, romantic, loving teenager. Her biggest goal is to help the people she cares about, like her family and sometimes complete strangers who just need a strong advocate. Unfortunately, this often gets her into a bit a trouble (cough cough... Rafe)

411: What drew you to your char-acter Molly Lansing Davis?HP: I love Molly's romantic side and the fact that she reads con-stantly. In those two areas, we are a lot alike. I love that her teenager attitude pops out every once in a while. This makes her more relatable and realistic.411: How do you get into charac-ter when you play Molly?HP: It's actually pretty easy for me to get into character. We are so much alike. Molly's family is like a real family to me, interact-ing with them is completely normal and comfortable.

411: What’s a day on set like for you?HP:HP: I usually have a really early call time, like6:45am, so I have to wake up around 5:15 to get to the studio on time. I start out in hair and make-up, then we do blocking at 7:15. Any time that I'm not on set, I'm in school taking care of my three hours of class-work. The best part of the day is when I'm actually on set. I really miss it on the days actually on set. I really miss it on the days that I don't work.411: Would you say you are just like your character Molly?HP: I wouldn't say we are just alike, but we have a lot of similarities. However, we have some differences too. We have very different fashion sense. Molly doesn't really care about fashion trends, but I'm definitely ob-sessed with fashion and try to stay up to date with clothes and hair/makeup.(Contniued on Pg. 36 )

Emma Kenney 411: Can you tell us a little about your character on Shameless? EK: Debbie is a middle child, kind of lost in the mix. She is really smart, responsible and loyal, but also a loner.4411: What is like working on that set? EK: It is so much fun. Its like one big family not only because of the actors but also a lot of the crew have worked on Shameless since season one so you really get to know everyone.4411: At what age did you start acting? EK: I started at 4 but not really for acting. I only took improv classes for fun because I didn’t like any other activity. My teacher was a lot of fun. Her name was Kerry Lea and she is Jesse and Hallie Eisenberg’s sister. We spent the class pretending diWe spent the class pretending differ-ent scenes. She would say “ok I own a candy store and its closed and you have to convince me to open it up”. 411: Is there an actor or actress that inspires you? EK: I get asked that a lot and I think I give different answers every time!! But I guess any actress who went to college and has other interests other than just acting, like directing or writ-ing scripts, stuff like that. That is the type of actress I look up to and want to be like. to be like. (Continued on Pg. 37 )

Landry Bender 411: How would you describe your char-acter Cleo on Crash and Bernstein?LB: She’s very fashionable, an entrepre-neur, sassy, and a know-it-all. Even though she’s only 11, she thinks she’s the smartest one in the family.411:What’s your favorite part so far when it comes to playing Cleo?LB:Because of her sass, she’s always yelling at Crash, it’s really cool to be able to scream at a puppet. *laughs* Tim Lagasse our puppeteer is really talented, he makes Crash come to life.4411: Would you say your character Cleo and you are very similar?LB: I definitely think we have some sim-ilar qualities, I will admit we both have are a little sassy, we both like things a certain way, we both love fashion.411:What can you tell us about Crash and Bernstein for those who have not seen the show?LB:LB:It’s set up as a kids show but it’s also a show that most anyone can relate to. Kids have to learn to get along with siblings (whether they are purple or not) and it’s really a family show, we live our “everyday lives” with a crazy little thing living with us.

411:What can fans look forward to with Cleo in the season?LB:LB:Our show has some really funny stuff coming up! Cleo’s always trying to promote and create different busi-nesses all based on her own brand, “Cleo”. Depending on the episodes she has sold perfumes, cotton candy, face wash, and even bags of dirt, just watch…. *laughs*watch…. *laughs*411:How would you describe your char-acters style of fashion?LB:The head costumer, Shana Knecht gets all the credit for creating Cleo’s style. She told me at the beginning of the season, “This is what I would wear in 7th Grade if my mom let me and had the budget to make it happen.” Cleo is very layered – leggings under skirts under shirts under jackets under tons of under shirts under jackets under tons of jewelry and always a hat. She loves combat boots, printed leggings any-thing with an edge to make her stand out. 411:Would you say that it matches your style?LB: I’m definitely very similar but maybe a little more simple.(Continued on Pg.37 )

(Natalie Dreyfus from Pg. 30 ) Chloe had them in tan and black. Anytime they were in my trailer to wear for the day I was excited!4411: What can you fans out there to expect in this upcoming season as well as with your character Chloe?ND:ND: It's our last season, so every-thing is wrapping up this year. You can expect a lot of changes and drama in the end! As for Chloe, there are some fun twists and turns in her story where you get to see how much she has changed since she got this new life. she got this new life. 411: How did you get into acting? Was there anyone you inspired to?ND: I have been around sets and actors most of my life but I never thought it was going to be some-thing I loved to do. After taking my first acting class, I was hooked. I am inspired by strong, funny women in this industry such as TTina Fey and Amy Poehler. 411: What message do you hope the show will bring forth to the viewers?ND:Teenagers will always have secrets and no one is alone no matter how they are feeling or what they are experiencing.

(Haley Pullos from Pg.32 )4411: You did an interview with Peta about animal adoption and how its important to give your animal compan-ions lots of love and proper care. Why is this so close to your heart? What do you hope speaking out will accom-plish?HP: I have always been an animal lover! I hope speaking out will help bring up the awareness of the benefits of adoption versus breeding. Animals are loving creatures and deserve to be loved in return.4411: What would you say is your favor-ite thing to shoot… Movies or TV Se-ries/Spots?HP: I really like shooting soap operas because they move so quickly. I am a very fast-paced person and I love the challenge that it provides me. Typical-ly, we only get one opportunity to rehearse, so it's important to get it right the first time. Of course, movies and primetime television are also awesome! primetime television are also awesome! Actors from those types of show get to perfect their delivery because there is more time to get it right. What is currently on your ipod?Oooh - I like this question! Lana Del Rey, The Lumineers, The Black Keys, Ed Sheeran, Marina & The Diamonds,

But, I love Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. My family and I try to go every summer. I'm hoping to get to Jamaica for Christmas this year, so I might have a new answer by this time next yearby this time next year411: Who inspired you as an actress growing up?HP: I have always looked up to Hilary Duff. She is my idol and the reason I became an actress. I would love to meet her someday so Ican say, "Thank you!" 411

EK:So far, Iceland and France. I’m going back to Paris this summer for a week. 411(From LandryBender, P.34 )411:How do you stay grounded when it comes balancing normal life and being an actress?LB:LB:My parents have definitely kept me grounded. I go see my friends in Ari-zona (where I’m from) AT LEAST three times a year, I come home from work everyday and do schoolwork, and of course the same chores every kid has; make my bed, clean my room, and feed my dog. feed my dog. 411:What was it like to work on the movie The Sitter?LB:The Sitter was the first big project I had ever worked on and it was a great experience. Fox put us in a really nice apartment in NYC for 4 months so I got to see and do so much. Jonah Hill was a great influence, helping me learn the business. I also became good friends with Max Records and Kevin Hernanwith Max Records and Kevin Hernan-dez (my brothers in the film), we stay in touch and see each other sometimes too. 411
