District Governor Suraj P. “Raj” Bhatia Governor’s Newsletter District 7490 Bergen, Hudson, Passaic February, 2010 GREETINGS FROM THE GOVERNOR! Welcome to the Governor’s monthly Newsletter. February is “World Understanding” month and we look forward to celebrating Rotary’s 105 th Anniversary on February 23 rd , 2010. This also marks the 25 th year of our efforts towards the eradication of Polio. The Chicago club, which was the first club started by the Rotary founder Paul Harris, celebrates by lighting up the Wrigley Building in downtown Chicago with the End Polio Now logo and I encourage every club in the District to use the anniversary of the first Rotary club meeting to share the story of Rotary’s local and global plans for the eradication of Polio with the people in their communities. For the past few weeks, District Rotarians have mobilized their efforts towards helping the people of Haiti. We established the Dis- trict 7490 Haiti Disaster Relief Fund as our District response to the situation. I thank you all for your generous donations to the Fund. AG Ray Falcon is serving as Chair of the District 7490 Haiti Disas- ter Relief Committee, which will administer the Fund. The Com- mittee will identify where and how the funds should be disbursed and ensure that the money is allocated on items of immediate need to the people affected by the earthquake. Our goal is to provide the people of Haiti the items that will benefit them the most and to provide that assistance as soon as possible. Two Fund Sub- Committees have been established: a Disbursement Sub-Committee tasked with reviewing all requests for disbursements from the Fund; and an Action Sub-Committee, tasked with working with the requester of the disbursement to implement any approved dis- bursements. Peter Kikot, from the Ridgewood A.M. Club, recently returned from Haiti after undertaking a relief mission. Rev. Andy Topp and Jeff Wells, also from the Ridgewood A.M Club, were in Les Cayes at the time the Earthquake hit, remained for some time working on relief efforts, and have now returned. They have provided us with signifi- cant intelligence on the conditions in Les Cayes area, which is the focus of our relief efforts. The need for shelter is acute. In addition to the shelter Boxes, another possible solution under consideration is to acquire steel shipping containers, send them to Les Cayes and convert them into housing for persons affected by the earthquake. The Action Sub-Committee is exploring the viability of this option as well as other options. We will give you an update of all the ac- tions taken at the next District Staff meeting. We celebrated Gift of Life program with a presentation at the Dis- trict Staff meeting from the Paramus Sunrise club who collected substantial amount of money for the GOL children, and had a his- torical view from PDG Art Scialla, who started the program in our district in 1985. (Continued on Next Column) As we look ahead into March we focus our efforts on Literacy, which has been a priority for Rotary International for many years. But oddly enough, the word has meaning far beyond its commonplace definition: being able to read. Here is how we need to interpret our call to action on behalf of “Literacy”. We need to focus and develop projects in each of the three categories such as, functional literacy, character literacy and Basic literacy. Finally, I will leave you with these thoughts. Rotarians are able to make changes that will shape the course not only of the months but of the years and decades that lie ahead. This is our privilege. Building Communities – Bridging Continents’.

The theme of Rotary International for 2010 – 2011 will be “Building Communities – Bridging Continents” President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced last week. Speaking at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego on January 19, Mr. Klinginsmith said in part: “I hope you agree that these four words [Building Communities - Bridg-ing Continents] aptly reflect who we are and what we do as Rotarians.” He continued: We are a unique and a premier organization, certainly one of the best in the world. We build the spirit and resources of our local communities in an important way, which was beautifully summarized by the governor of my district last year, Elizabeth Usovicz: ‘When a positive spirit comes alive in our clubs, we inspire our com-munities. And when our communities are inspired by our service and presence, we inspire new members.” Mr. Klinginsmith said also that while members of other service organizations “may not concede the point” that Rota-ry “is the best in the world at building communities” few could doubt that it “is the best in the world at linking people of goodwill around the globe and then gaining their coopera-tion and support to make the world a much better place to live and work.” Mr. Klinginsmith spoke also of Rotary initiatives such as the Youth Exchange in which high school students from around the world attend school for a year in foreign lands and of the Group Study Exchange, in which young profes-sional people visit foreign nations, learning how people in comparable professions work and experiencing the culture of the place by living with Rotary families. During the International Assembly, district governors-elect, including Adele E. Miller of the Jersey City Rotary Club, are undergoing training in preparation for the duties they will undertake beginning on July 1.

The theme of Rotary International for 2010 – 2011 will be “Build-ing Communities - Bridging Continents” as symbolized by this logo which was released at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego last week.

District Rotarians Establish a Haiti Disaster Relief Fund.

Rotary District 7490 has a unique opportunity to assist the relief efforts in Haiti. The District has a long-standing in-volvement in Haiti, with strong relationships with various organizations and sponsorship of ongoing projects in Haiti. According to District 7490’s District Governor, Suraj Bhatia, several Rotarians from District 7490 were working on a Ro-tary project near the city of Les Cayes, Haiti, when the earthquake hit. Les Cayes, the third largest city in Haiti is about 100 miles from Port-au-Prince. Mr. Bhatia com-mented: “These Rotarians were able to provide us with real-time information on what was happening in the area. In addition, some of our local Haitian partners, such as the Rotary Club of Les Cayes and Hospital Immaculate Concep-tion (the local hospital in Les Cayes) have provided us with ongoing information.” Indications are that large numbers of people from Port-au-Prince are coming into Les Cayes, putting tremendous pres-sure on the community. Medical supplies are in very short supply as is shelter for the refugees. In response, District 7490 has set up the District 7490 Haiti Disaster Relief Fund. The primary purpose of the Fund is to provide money to purchase medical supplies and shelter (including shelter boxes) for Les Cayes, as well as to address other specific Haitian relief needs as they arise. District Governor Bhatia added: “We at Rotary know we can make a difference. Rotary is unique in its ability to inter-face, Rotarian to Rotarian, in locations all over the world. With its network of over 1.2 million Rotarians in 33,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide, Rotary can have an immediate and direct impact on local conditions. Through the presence of our members in Les Cayes, and our relationships with local organizations, we are confident that Rotary District 7490 can support relief efforts I that area effectively in a real and tangible way.” Since District 7490 has no office or administrative costs, 100% of the money donated to the Fund will go directly to-ward Haiti disaster relief. Rotarian volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the Ro-tary motto” Service Above Self.” If you wish to support the District’s efforts, please make your check out to “Walter D. Head Foundation, which is District 7490 charitable organization. Write “Haiti Relief Fund” on the memo line of the check and mail it to Haiti Relief Fund, Attn.: Assistant Governor Ray Falcon, C/O Fal-con & Singer, P.C., 221 West Avenue, Montvale, New Jersey 07465-1729. HACKENSACK ROTARY CLUB’S ESSAY CONTEST.  The concept of ethics has been interwoven with human be-havior since the beginning of time— sometimes with posi-tive outcomes, sometimes not so much. In today’s world, scarcely a day goes by that we don’t see the subject of ethics affecting at least one major story in the news. So the issue clearly merits examination, and you are invited to partici-pate in the conversation. Rotary International—the world’s oldest and largest service organization—was founded over 100 years ago on the basis of a very specific set of ethics, which Rotarians refer to as “The 4Way Test.” This year, the Hackensack Rotary Club is sponsoring an essay contest based on that 4-Way Test. The writing competition is open to all students (no age limitations) attending either Hackensack High School or Bergen Academies, or any Hackensack res-ident attending any other high school. There will be $1000 in prize money awarded: First Place—$500; 2nd Place—$300; 3rd Place— $200. All three prize win-ners will be invited to attend the Hackensack Rotary Club’s 90th Year Celebration Gala on May 14, 2010, where the rec-ognition and prize money will be awarded. Judging of the essays will be on a 100 point system: 45 points for content (substance of ideas, creativity, organiza-tion, and development of thoughts) 35 points for English basics (grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence construc-tion) 20 points for professional presentation (No emails will be accepted.) Participants will be asked to select and answer two of the three questions in Part One, as well as both questions in the compulsory Part Two. All entries must be typed and double-spaced, with a one-inch margin on each side, top, and bot-tom. Maximum Word Count: 500 words for each of the three questions (1500 words total). Submission Deadline: March 1, 2010. Completed entries should be mailed to: Hackensack Rotary Essay Contest, P.O. Box 471, Hackensack, NJ 07602. Winners will be notified by the end of April 2010. All en-trants will have their essays returned, with the judges’ marks and comments. Prizes and recognition will be awarded on Friday evening, May 14, 2010, at the Hacken-sack Rotary’s 90th Anniversary Celebration in the Hilton Hasbrouck Heights. Each of the three winners and their parents will be invited. Rotary reserves the right to copy, publish, and distribute the three winning entries. NOTE TO ALL CONTESTANTS from members of the Hackensack Rotary Club: In keeping with the spirit of this essay contest, your entries must be your work alone.

(Continued on Next Column)

There should be no input from, or editing by, teachers, par-ents, tutors, friends, guidance counselors, siblings, or any other person. Remember: This is an essay contest about eth-ics! Thanks and good luck! Prior to writing your essay, we recommend that you read the articles “Is It the Truth?” (the Rotarian magazine, Au-gust 2009), as well as “I [mis] behaved” and “I’m [not] sorry” (the Rotarian magazine, September 2009). These articles will give you additional background and perspectives that might help motivate your thoughts. If you do not have cop-ies of these articles and wish to have them sent to you, please contact Cheri Laser at 201-230-1538. The Rotary International 4-Way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all con-cerned? Part One (Select and answer two of the three ques-tions—your choice—writing 500 words maximum each, or a combined total of 1000 words): A. If every member of the United States Congress, in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, was forced to apply all four elements of this 4-Way Test to every decision they made, how do you think the news stories today would be different? You may choose to focus on the Congress in general, on a specific issue such as Health Care Reform, or on a combination of the general and specific. B. If CEOs and executive management teams of major fi-nancial institutions (banks, investment banking firms, bro-kerage houses, venture capital organizations, etc.) had al-ways been forced to apply all four elements of this 4-Way Test to their decisions, how do you think the financial health of our country would be different today? You may choose to address the subject in general, or to focus on a specific institution that has been in the news during the last year, or a combination of the general and specific. C. If every student and teacher in your school had to first make certain that every action and decision they made passed all four elements of this 4-Way Test, how do you think things would be different in your school? Part Two (Answer both questions. Length should not exceed a maximum combined total of 500 words): a) Do you believe that striving to achieve ethical standards such as the Rotary 4-Way Test is still a realistic goal in to-day’s society? If yes, why? If no, why not? b) Describe one aspect of your own life (in school, at work, or at home) where you think that applying the Rotary 4-Way Test would cur-rently—or would have in the past— improve(d) conditions or an outcome for you and/or those around you. A couple of reference books that might also be of help to you as you write: The Chicago Manual of Style—The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers (a classic refer-ence source, and still the most universally used in the writ-ing/publishing world) Grammatically Correct: The Writer’s Essential Guide to Punctuation, Spelling, Style, Usage, and Grammar by Anne Stilman (very user-friendly)
