This marks our eighth year ranking the best small and medium companies nationwide and the eighth year that we’ve seen an impressive roster of exceptional organizations dedicated to creating great workplaces.

Recognizing the achievements of small- and medium-sized companies is extremely rewarding. SMEs play a crucial role in our economy, employing more than half of the private sector and shipping 30% of US exports.

Given the recent global economic uncertainty, we were curious to see how these small and medium companies fared this year. Would we see a drop in enthusiasm and drive to create great workplaces? Would companies lose sight of the business benefits of a culture based on trust?

It turns out that the answer is no—instead we saw an increase in creativity and strategy in the programs and policies these companies selected. These Best Workplaces have chosen programs that meet their employees’ needs, programs that bolster company values and in many cases, programs that take little in the way of resources to carry out but mean everything to their employees.

So without further ado, I’d like to introduce this year’s winners.

Once again ACUITY has made the #1 position in the Medium category. Since this list’s inception, this reigning champion has never fallen out of the top five. These world-class champs have continued to build upon their strengths and further drive sustained growth.

Leapfrogging to the top spot this year in the Small category from #9 just twelve months ago is Snagajob. To insure their unique culture is kept intact, all current employees are trained in a variety of interviewing and assessment skills, up to a dozen of them eventually consulting with the CEO on the selection of each new hire. The Culture Squad—a representative group of “snaggers” from every department—focuses on maintaining and improving the company culture by welcoming every new hire as they complete their “Snagger Confession,” a list of fun personal facts shared with their colleagues via the company intranet. Through their “Rotating Officer Program,” Bank Officers can elect to join board meetings, getting a look at how the company is governed in the midst of industry challenges.

Employees’ art work is on display throughout the office, and the firm sponsors fun competitions for employees to demonstrate their long jump or slowest-bike-riding skills. Quirky awards are handed out to employees at their annual offsite meeting and include such titles as “The MacGyver” (for the employee who has an answer for any situation) and “The Optimist” (who keeps a positive attitude in spite of obstacles). They host an all-agency happy hour-dubbed “Schbooze” on the third Thursday of each month, creating a forum for employees (and management) to mingle and chat in a casual environment.
