GRACE E Destination: The Baltic Summer 2015
Summer 2015
Sail the Baltic in ultimate luxury onboard GRACE E
There are literally hundreds of thousands of islands across the Baltic Sea from top to bottom offering stunning views across varied coastlines. Take a helicopter or seaplane ride over the stunning waterfalls and glaciers or try some skiing or reindeer and dog team sleighs. Taste home made cheeses and creams straight from the traditional farms and order private performances of musicians and artists on coastal islands. It’s quite simply a perfect cruising destination.
Many are lured to the land of the midnight sun with images of the electric hues of the Aurora Borealis, cross country skiing over snow-clad mountains and dramatic mountain scenery. Less well known is the late spring and summer seasons when the Fjords in the south are in blossom, lined with apple and cherry orchards. Temperatures can rise up to 30 degree Celsius and the crystal, clean fjord waters welcome swimmers, divers, kayak enthusiasts and waterskiers. Many of the fjords have been added to the list of World Heritage Sites because of their outstanding beauty, with depths varying between 10 and 500 metres and the surrounding mountains rising up to more than 1400 metres high. But it’s not all just about nature; the cities and towns are vibrant and exciting centres of culture and history with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
According to the UN, Norway is the best place to live in the world.
An array of diverse activities immersed in nature.
Cruising in the wildest landscapes.
Norway Places to visit
Trondheim The oldest of Norway's major cities, and its old heritage can still be traced in and around the city centre. The marvellous Nidaros Cathedral, the second largest church of Northern Europe, towers over the city centre, which is roughly the area inside the meandering Nidelva. The city boasts a rich, cultural heritage, but is still a major centre. Even if the size is modest, there's a lot going on in Trondheim. Music, arts, culture, alternative politics, nightlife, student life... all combines into making Trondheim one of the most exciting city centres of Northern Europe.
Kristiansund A city and municipality on the mid-western coast of Norway, located in Møre og Romsdal county. It is arguably the city with the most special and interesting architecture of Norway, which originates from the aftermath of World War Two, when nearly 80% of the city was demolished by bombs. Situated on five islands slightly off the shore of main-land Norway. The natural harbour formed by the islands is considered to be very unique and particularly beautiful, protecting the city centre from winds and weather outside in the Atlantic Ocean.
Geiranger Geiranger is a village in Møre og Romsdal. The Geirangerfjord is one of the most beautiful mainland fjords. In a rating of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Geirangerfjord (along with Nærøyfjord in Sogn og Fjordane) obtained top score in a survey conducted by prestigious National Geographic Magazine.
Sognefjorden Sognefjorden is the longest fjord in Europe. Nærøyfjord, a World Heritage Site, is one of the Sognefjorden.

Balestrand A small charming village on the edge of the Sognefjord in Sogn og Fjordane. There is a nature trail up the hill from Balestrand and numerous other walks with plenty of great views of the fjord. Mountains: There are several marked walks\hikes starting from Balestrand, some go through the woods others go on up to the tops of mountains and along ridges, some can be turned into very long circular routes (about 8 hours). Fjord: There are some trips on small boats out into the fjord as well as the regular large daily ferries to Fjærland Glacier and Vik stave church Road. One of the National tourist routes of Norway runs from Balestrand along some smaller fjords and up into the Gaularfjell mountains a truly beautiful road and landscape. Bicycles can also be rented from Balestrand tourist information.
Gudvangen A major attraction in this village is the Kjelfoss (Kjelfoss Waterfall). This waterfall can be seen from boatquay, or from E16. The total hight is 755 m (2477 ft). The highest single drop is 149 m (490 ft).
Nærøyfjorden This fjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beautiful scenery of the fjord surrounded by mountains up to 1800 metres tall will take the breath out of you. The fjord is 17 km (11 mi) long. At the most narrow it is only 250 m (820 ft) wide.
Bergen The second largest city in Norway and the most popular gateway to the fjords of West Norway. The city is renowned for its beautiful nature and offers excellent hiking opportunities in its immediate surroundings. Having fostered many of Norway's greatest bands and artists, the city is also famous for its cultural life and underground/indie music scene. The old town, Bryggen, is listed as a UNESCO world Heritage Site.

Stavanger Two major attractions near Stavanger are two plateaus that are part of the 45km fjord called Lysefjord that runs for 45 km deep beneath them. Preikestolen (The Pulpit Rock), it is a massive 600 metres vertical cliff that sits on the edge of the Lysefjord. Its top is a natural lookout of several hundred square metres, almost perfectly flat, and the rock is the region's main tourist attraction, and one of the nation's landmarks. Kjerag, which is almost double the altitude of Preikestolen but the access is more difficult, is further into the Lysefjord. Farsund A gorgeous harbour and worth visiting because of its beautiful scenery and surroundings. Lillesand The Lillesand municipality is located in the most famous part of the archipelago along the Skagerak coast. The idyllic town centre is typical of towns in this area, white painted, wooden houses around a small port. Risør A very well preserved coast town between Kristiansand and Oslo, with an old history of sailing ships and lumber export in the golden days in the late 18 century, nowadays known for art and handicraft.
Quick facts - Norway o During a 7 or 10 day cruise you can explore roughly 6 different sections of the coastline. Each section is different, but
there are some common features: they all offer breathtaking scenery with deep fjords, thousands of islands, towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, wonderful fresh air, clean water, tranquillity and unspoilt nature.
o The Sognefjord in Norway is the world’s longest fjord: 205 kilometres long, it reaches from the North Sea all the way into the mountainous centre of Norway. The journey takes you past breathtaking seascapes with myriads of islands and their bird colonies, old lighthouses, deserted fishing villages and numerous Viking remains.
o Trondheim, Norway's first capital, is an ancient city and very prominent in the country’s history. Just 500km from the Polar Circle, the warm Gulf Stream nevertheless allows for a relatively mild climate. Its most important monument is the Nidaros Cathedral. In Medieval times this church was one of Europe's most important pilgrimage sites. The shrine on the high altar is of St. Olav, the King who converted Norway to Christianity and died a martyr in 1030.
o Cruising from Brønnøysund to Bodø you will cross the Arctic Circle. North of this point you will be able to enjoy the wonderful light of the midnight sun around Midsummer and of course the Northern Light during the fascinating Winter time.
Quick facts - Norway o Climate: Norway enjoys a surprisingly temperate climate. For this you can thank the Gulf Stream, which flows north
along the coast. Alta in the country’s far north receives less rain than the Sahara! In January, the average maximum temperature is between 1°C and -3°C.Average maximum temperatures for July hover around 16°C in the south (although they can be double that) and around 13°C in the north. Norway is at its best and brightest for much of the period from May to September. May is particularly pleasant: flowers are blooming, fruit trees blossoming (especially in Hardangerfjord), daylight hours are growing longer. North of the Arctic Circle, the true midnight sun is visible at least one day a year, and at Nordkappit stays out from 13 May to 29 July. At any time of the year, be aware that extremes of temperature are always possible; over 30°C in summer and below -30ºC in winter!
o Currency: The Norwegian krone is most often represented either as Nkr, NOKor simply kr . One Norwegian krone (Nkr1) equals 100 øre. Visa, Eurocard, MasterCard, Diners Club and American Express cards are widely accepted.
o Language & Religion: Norwegian is the official language, but English is widely understood. The religion is mainly Evangelical Lutheran.
o Time Zone: Local time is GMT +1 (GMT +2 from the last Sunday in March and the Saturday before the last Sunday in October).
