Information Session for Parents

Apprenticeship
To be successful studying at an apprenticeship, students should:
• learn best in an informal, hands-on setting
• be able to take direction from others while working with a mentor
• Planning an apprenticeship?
• Research labor market trends
• Explore pre-apprentice/co-op programs at college
• Resume • Reference letters • Network• Use web resources
College
To be successful at college, students should:
• enjoy practical learning more than theoretical
• have chosen a specific career that requires specific skills that they will learn studying college programs
(some colleges offer applied degree programs with mandatory Co-op placements)
�Application Process:
� Workshops/Open Houses/Tours
� Application Fee $95 for five choices (no more than 3 at any given school)
� Admission requirements
� Cost/financing – OSAP, webinars
Admission to College
� For the most part, diploma programs in Ontario require ENG4C/U
� There are some highly competitive programs which will mandate certain course requirements
� Some programs will ask for supplemental application items, students must be aware of all criteria and must meet all deadlines
�Deadline for online application is Feb 1st, 2020
February 1, 2020 Equal consideration date
February 1, 2020 Earliest admission offer date for high school applicants
May 1, 2020 Confirmation date for acceptance of an offer of admission - online
*Colleges WILL make final decisions based on Gr 11 marks

University
To be successful studying at university, students should:
• be independent learners who take responsibility for their own learning
• be able to set their own study hours and meet assignment deadlines
• Develop critical thinking skills that can be applied to the real world

� Application Fee $150 for first 3 choices, $50 each additional choice
� Admission requirements
� Cost/financing – OSAP
Admission to University
� General admission to any university in Ontario requires 6 Gr 12 U/M level courses
� ENG4U and five other courses as dictated by the program of choice
� Some programs will require additional supplemental application items
� Students must complete all criteria for supplemental items and adhere to all deadlines
�Deadline for online application is January 15th, 2020
January 15, 2020: Application deadline
May 27, 2020: Universities must respond to your application
June 1, 2020: Earliest date universities may require a response to an offer
* Gr 12 Sem 1 finals and Sem2 midterms are used for FINAL admission offers, any offers using Gr 11 marks are CONDITIONAL
