REDD+First introduced in 2005, REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation

and Forest Degradation) is a UNsupported, performancebased payment systemdesigned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan involves payingdeveloping countries not to cut down trees. Additional financial incentives areprovided to plant trees in areas that have been logged or where there were no treesbefore. ( 26 ), countries receive funding of various amounts based on howmuch they can reduce overall deforestation.

REDD+ has enjoyed some success in reducing logging. Brazil, for example, cut logging by 70 percent, while China, thanks to a combination of variousprograms, has seen forest areas increase by an average of 3 million hectares a yearsince 2000. REDD+ seems to have had less success in African nations, wheredeforestation is reported to be on the rise. However, progress ( 27 ).Information about forest resources in Africa is often unreliable, and thedeforestation rate across the continent is thought to be exaggerated, with the realfigure possibly being half of what is reported.

Critics say REDD+ emphasizes ( 28 ). Because of REDD+, countriesmay start logging healthy, mature forests and replacing them with plantations offastgrowing eucalyptus trees. This makes economic sense since the countries arepaid based on the number of trees planted. However, new plantations are lesseffective than mature forests at absorbing CO2, so there is a net loss in terms ofenvironmental value. The priority, therefore, should be protecting existing highvalue forests instead of replacing them with trees that are less efficient at reducinggreenhouse gases.

Summer JobsIt has long been a tradition for American high school students to spend their

summer vacation working. As well as being a chance to earn money, the summerjob has generally been regarded as an important step in the growing up processbecause it teaches responsibility and interpersonal skills. ( 29 ), changes inboth young people’s attitudes and the labor market have strongly impacted thenumber of teens employed during the summer. Today, approximately onethird ofteens have summer jobs a figure that is roughly half what it was just fourdecades ago.

Parents once encouraged their children to take summer jobs to gain basicskills that would serve them later in the working world. However, many studentstoday ( 30 ). The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in the last 20 years, the number of 16to19yearolds enrolled in summer school has tripled. Ascollege degrees have become essential for career success and tuition fees continueto rise, many students have realized that taking advanced classes during thesummer to win scholarships can be more beneficial than working at a minimumwage job.

Another factor behind the decreasing popularity of summer jobs may be( 31 ). Recently, many teenagers have been choosing to do unpaidinternships during the summer. As older adults are remaining in the workforcelonger than ever, many young graduates have been losing out to these moreexperienced applicants even for entrylevel positions. Consequently, the chance toacquire careerspecific skills has become more appealing. With the US economystrengthening, however, the traditional summer job could begin to make acomeback.

Stranded WhalesIn January and February 2016, more than two dozen male sperm whales were found

washed up on European beaches around the North Sea. These whales had entered shallowwaters with sand or mud on the bottom, which prevented them from using sonar clicks tonavigate. They became trapped in these shallow areas, and without enough water tosupport their tremendous weight, their lungs collapsed and the whales died of respiratoryfailure. It was initially thought the whales had entered the areas in pursuit of squid, afavorite prey food, or that they might have swallowed fatal quantities of plastic. However, these theories were quickly disproved.

After further research, an alternative explanation emerged. Whales use both sonarand Earth’s magnetic field to navigate. In December 2015, when sperm whales weremigrating south from the Norwegian Sea, the aurora borealis was visible. These brightlights in the northern sky are caused by storms that occur on the sun, and they are a signthat these storms are strongly interfering with Earth’s magnetic field. Such storms canconfuse migratory animals such as birds, and probably also caused whales relying on themagnetic field to become disoriented and enter shallow waters.

All the stranded whales were young males. In general, female sperm whales andtheir babies remain in waters around the equator. Males, on the other hand, migrate inwhat are known as “bachelor groups” once they become independent between the ages of10 and 15. Older, experienced males are more solitary and travel alone, leaving theinexperienced males to fend for themselves. Scientists believe the young males wererelying on magnetic sensing and did not realize they had strayed from their migrationroute. In contrast, more experienced whales would have known to use other navigationmethods, such as sonar clicks, to reorient themselves before it was too late.

(32) What happened to the whales that were found on North Sea beaches?1 The large amounts of sand and mud in the waters they swam into enteredtheir lungs and affected their breathing.

2 The squid they were hunting led them to unfamiliar territory, where theyconsumed harmful plastic waste.

3 They swam into shallow areas where their heavy weight resulted in theirbeing unable to breathe.

4 They consumed a type of animal that happened to be toxic, making themtoo ill to swim to deeper waters.

(33) What is true of the aurora borealis in the context of the passage?1 It was so much brighter than usual that many sea animals became distractedby the lights and were unable to orient themselves.

2 It was a result of the same phenomenon that had likely caused the whalesto become confused and navigate incorrectly.

3 Its presence over the Norwegian Sea caused many birds to fly toward theNorth Sea, which led the whales to follow.

4 Its appearance farther south than usual weakened the whales’ ability to usesonar clicks to confirm the depth of the waters.

(34) If the whales had been older, they would have1 realized that they had traveled off course and tried to find their way againusing a different method.

2 been less independent and therefore swum back toward the equator to returnto the females.

3 known to follow the lead of the females, which generally travel more andhave better navigation skills.

4 been unable to use sonar clicks to request help from other whales that werenearby.

Forecasting the Big BlowUnlike many extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and severe snowstorms,

geological phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are difficult to predict. In recent years, however, a number of tools have been developed to help scientists makecorrect judgments of the risk of these events. Modern methods of analysis that use realtime satellite data to continuously revise computer models have greatly improvedscientists’ understanding of geological activity. Additionally, scientists now use satellitedata to measure slight changes in the landscape around volcanoes. Earth’s crust can rise amillimeter at a time as it is pushed up by the pressure of the hot liquid rock, or magma, below. Though this cannot be perceived by visual observation on the ground, satellitecameras far above can determine whether a volcano’s surface is rising an indicator of apossible eruption.

Scientists are particularly concerned about caldera volcanoes. These are largeformations created by ancient volcanoes that collapsed inward after erupting. Calderas sitabove pools of magma that can erupt with little warning. Because the rich soil aroundsuch volcanoes tends to attract dense human settlement, eruptions can be especiallydeadly. Calderas are not coneshaped like typical volcanoes, so the possibility of aneruption often simply does not occur to people. Moreover, their fairly flat shape poses anadditional risk: unlike with coneshaped volcanoes, which generally erupt from the top ofthe cone, there is no way to tell from where on the surface of a caldera volcano themagma will escape, and it may even come out of multiple spots.

Campi Flegrei, west of the Italian city of Naples, is a caldera volcano that scientistsare examining closely, as more than 700,000 people live within its “danger zone.” Inrecent years, patterns of land rise there have been similar to those that occurred beforecaldera eruptions in other parts of the world, indicating that the crust may be near thebreaking point. The Italian government has raised alert levels but has hesitated to takefurther steps such as evacuating residents. Experts cannot say with certainty whetherCampi Flegrei will erupt soon, or likewise give any timeline for a future eruption.Residents of the area, having experienced numerous false alarms, do not want to evacuatewhen an eruption is far from certain. Furthermore, property values have fallen when pastwarnings were issued, allowing real estate investors to buy land at bargain rates. This hasmade some residents suspicious of the motive behind emergency warnings.

(35) What is one example of a recent advance in predicting volcanic eruptions?1 Computer analysis of realtime data has proved more useful than satellitemeasurements.

2 Satellite data showing changes in the level of Earth’s crust can indicatevolcanic activity.

3 Computer models allow scientists to calculate the temperature of magma ina given location.

4 Satellite data gathered during extreme weather events can be useful inpredicting the size of eruptions.

(36) In the second paragraph, what does the author of the passage say about calderavolcanoes?

1 Their relatively flat shape can lead people to overlook the fact that theycould erupt.

2 They are more likely than typical volcanoes to show obvious warning signsbefore they erupt.

3 Their shape makes it clear to scientists that they are not particularly activeand are therefore safe to study.

4 The fact that they are poorly suited for human habitation means they areideal places to carry out research.

(37) What is suggested about Campi Flegrei?1 The government will only declare a state of emergency if there is evidenceof land rise occurring.

2 Because so much focus is put on the possibility of an eruption, localresidents are quick to react to emergency warnings.

3 The government is concerned that scientists have not considered all thepossible factors that could lead to an eruption.

4 Even though the volcano has been showing signs it could erupt, it may bedifficult to convince local residents of the actual danger.

Debating a Teaching ApproachIn recent decades, teachers wanting to break away from traditional classroom

methodologies have altered their teaching approach to conform to the “learning styles” oftheir students. The idea is that students learn better when they are taught in a way thatcorresponds with their preferred style. For example, “visual learners” can comprehendinformation more easily when they are presented with diagrams or illustrations, whereasother students may learn more easily through listening, or by working with their hands.

The practice of categorizing students by learning style has caught on: 96 percent ofteachers surveyed recently said they believed in the idea. It is not difficult to see whysuch a system would be attractive to teachers seeking to better meet their students’ needs. The theory has also been embraced by parents whose children are struggling in schoolthe idea that their child may perform poorly on written tests because they are actually“picture smart” or “music smart” is appealing. As the learningstyles theory has grown inpopularity, dozens of supposed styles have been identified, and an entire industry hasgrown up around the idea, with conferences being held across the world and librariesoffering materials intended to help educators teach different types of learners.

One would think that a method with such a significant influence on classroomapproaches would have extensive research behind it. However, there is little solid proofthat teaching to a student’s strengths is an effective practice. In fact, researchers havefound major flaws in methods used to quantify learning styles. The idea is based on theclassification of people into specific types of learners, but studies have found very littleevidence that people actually fall into distinct groupings in this way. “I think as a purelyreflective exercise, just to get you thinking about your study habits, [learning styles]might have a benefit,” says Polly Husmann, an assistant professor at Indiana UniversitySchool of Medicine. “But the way we’ve been categorizing these learning styles doesn’tseem to hold up.”

While students often express and demonstrate preferences for specific methods, studies show that what actually helps them learn better is for the educator to ensure theteaching approach suits the material being taught. University of Virginia professor DanielWillingham says, “People’s alleged learning styles don’t count for anything in accountingfor task performance, but the effect of a strategy on a task is huge.” Learning a newlanguage, for example, is easier when the material is reviewed verbally, but mathconcepts such as geometry are better suited to visual methods. In addition, all studentscan benefit from lessons that combine different approaches to make material easier tounderstand. For example, a math teacher can encourage students to listen, read, and drawdiagrams to solve problems. The current focus on matching teaching methods to specifictypes of learners has taken such a hold, however, that Willingham believes the only wayto counter it is to revise the textbooks on educational theory. Only when the theory oflearning styles is no longer presented as a valid educational approach will it disappearfrom the classroom.

(38) The author of the passage mentions “visual learners” in the first paragraph to1 help explain the theory that including visual study materials in every subjecttaught at school is beneficial for all students.

2 offer an example that shows why presenting students with too many visualaids can weaken their listening and verbal skills.

3 illustrate the concept that each student has a favored method of acquiringnew information and learns better in response to it.

4 show that most students want educators to keep utilizing traditional methodsof teaching certain subjects.

(39) What is one reason some parents support the learningstyles theory?1 It implies that their child may possess special skills or abilities that are notreflected in their performance on written tests.

2 It encourages their child to apply a range of different approaches whensolving problems outside of the classroom.

3 It allows them to take part in their child’s school life even if theythemselves have an academic history of performing poorly on tests.

4 It has been shown to noticeably improve a child’s ability in subjects such asart or music.

(40) According to researchers, the learningstyles theory1 has been misused by teachers, who have failed to use it to separate studentsinto groups based on their study habits.

2 could be improved by expanding the definitions of individual learning stylesto include a wider variety of learners.

3 has been adopted by instructors in spite of a lack of evidence that showssuch styles actually exist.

4 gained popularity only after data showed that its application by teachersresults in increased academic achievement by students.

(41) What point is supported by Daniel Willingham’s statement?1 The match between the material being taught and the teaching approachmatters more than teaching to students’ preferred learning styles.

2 If the idea of learning styles continues to gain acceptance, there will likelybe major changes to textbooks on educational theory.

3 The connection between textbooks on educational theory and actualmethods used by teachers is not clear enough.
