May 2019 To: Masonic All-Star Band Members and Parents/Guardians

We are making the final arrangements for band camp to begin May 28th, and look forward to seeing you there. Enclosed with this letter you will find: A list of what to bring with you to camp, a letter from the band directors, a map of UNK campus, a tentative schedule of events, a Masonic Band sticker, Shrine Bowl tickets (if ordered), and your music.

Tuesday, May 28 – Registration will be in the lobby between 1:00 and 3:00 pm at Centennial Towers West at UNK – You are responsible for transportation to Kearney and home after the game. We will be housed in CTW Hall; please take good care of CTW Hall while you are in residence, keeping the public areas and your room clean. Any damage to your room will be billed to us and we, in turn, will bill the band members in the room. If you notice damage upon arrival, report it to one of the chaperones or to the front desk immediately. Lunch will not be provided on Tuesday. A representative of CGS Music will have a table set up during registration if you need to purchase flip folders, additional pages, lyres, etc.

Wednesday, May 29 – Group Picture - We will be taking a group picture at the stadium. You may order one at registration if you didn’t already order one online.

Friday, May 31 – On Friday evening, the band will be playing a public concert at Harmon Park in Kearney, beginning at 5:30 pm, with an ice cream social following. A sack supper will be provided for students at the park before going to the Big Apple for two hours of bowling from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Saturday, June 1 – PLEASE NOTE CHECK OUT TIMES …

10:00 am - The Parade starts. The route starts at Central Avenue & Railroad Street, north on Central to West 24th Street, west to 1st Avenue, and back to Railroad.

11:00 – 12:30 pm - Students will check out of the dorms. All luggage and personal items must be picked up by parents or guardians no later than 12:30 pm on Saturday BEFORE the game starts. Storage space will not be available during the game at the dorms.

MASONIC BAND CHECK LIST You are REQUIRED to bring the following items with you to camp:

BLACK SHORTS – Any plain, all black, medium length shorts will be satisfactory, preferably with a hanging length from 2" to 6" above the knee for a uniform appearance. Nylon athletic shorts are acceptable. Short-shorts will not be allowed. The black shorts should only be worn for performances on Friday and Saturday.

WHITE SHOES and SOCKS – White shoes and white ankle height socks need to be brought with you as part of your uniform. Clean, all white shoes are preferred, if possible. These do not need to be tennis shoes. DO NOT BRING BRAND NEW SHOES! YOU WILL GET BLISTERS!

TENNIS SHOES – Bring a separate pair of tennis shoes (any color) to be worn at all outdoor marching practices. Flip flops are not allowed to be worn during practices. Please bring plenty of socks for fresh changes at least each day, if not more. Bare feet tend to blister and become infected during practices.

Instrument, Lyres, Flip Folders and extra pages – Snare and quad players need these also. If you are unable to bring your instrument and have not notified us yet, do so at once. If you have been notified that you have been assigned to play bass drum, you do not need to bring one with you. If assigned to cymbals, please bring them with you if possible. If you can’t, please contact Michelle at 402-475-4640 or [email protected].

Music – Your sheet music is included with this mailing. Bring it with you. Bring a pencil to mark your music during practices.

Music Stands – Bring a music stand (preferably the small folding type). Instruments, Cases, Luggage: Make sure your name is on the outside of your luggage. Please make

sure your name is on the inside and outside of your instrument case, and ensure that all snaps and locks on your case are in good working order. We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen articles. Soft instrument cases are not recommended, as instruments will be loaded and unloaded from the instrument trucks several times a day. If you only have a soft case, please ensure that it has proper padding and closures.

BRING a Water Bottle with your name written on it.

It is RECOMMENDED that you bring the following items with you to camp:

Two-Pocket Canvas Nail Apron – It is helpful to bring an inexpensive nail apron (Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, etc.) to hold music, drill charts and a pencil during marching practice.

Extra Supplies – It is helpful to bring extra lyres and screws, as well as reeds or other items that may break or get lost.

Spending Money/Change – You should plan to bring any spending money you want for vending machines, pizza, concessions, etc. Change for vending machines is difficult, so bring ones and change if you would like to use those. There will most likely be opportunities to order pizza some nights, and the bowling alley concessions will be open Friday evening.

Personal Items – Students should bring bath shoes and personal toiletries. Laundry facilities are available in the residence hall.

Linens – A pillow, linens, blanket and towels (no daily exchange) will be provided for your use in the dorms. You may want to bring an extra bath towel, as well as an extra blanket if desired. An inexpensive “egg carton” foam mattress pad is a good addition for comfort. Walmart carries them for about $10 – certainly not required.

Sunscreen/Hat – Bring sunscreen! Students should wear comfortable clothing, shoes and hats for outdoor rehearsals.

Please note that the rooms DO NOT HAVE REFRIGERATORS OR MICROWAVES.

(800) 558-8029 • (402) 475-4640 • Fax (402) 475-4736 • www.glne.org May 2019 Masonic All-Star Band Participant: It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 25th Annual Masonic All-Star Band Clinic! We are very pleased that you will be joining us for what will be an entertaining and educational experience. The band directors are Mr. Brad Weber (retired Band Director from Wayne High School and Instructor of Percussion at Wayne State College), Mr. Dan Sodomka (Band Director, Aurora High School), and Dr. Dave Bohnert (Director of Bands, Wayne State College) as the co-directors of this year’s band. The success of the band relies upon each and every member to come to camp prepared and ready to work. It is very important that you carefully look at and practice the music before camp so we can be as effective and efficient as possible in our preparations for the parade and half-time performance. With 260+ students registered for camp who have never played together before, we have a lot to get done in a very short amount of practice time. If you are in the trumpet, trombone, alto sax or clarinet section, please learn the part with which you feel most comfortable. We will decide part assignments at camp, therefore the more familiar you are with the music, the better your chances are of getting the part that you wish. Percussion players also need to be familiar with parts before arriving so we waste no time in rehearsal. Percussion players, the Nebraska Masonic Band Cadence is available to listen to on our web site on the Masonic Band page of www.GLNE.org. Again, ALL of us need to be prepared for this camp to continue to be successful. Along with the staff mentioned above, there will be a large number of support staff. These adults will spend a great deal of time making sure you are safe and taken care of at all times. Many of these wonderful people have given up their summer vacation time to be with you because they are committed to you and what you are doing for the children and the Shrine Hospitals. It is our hope that you will share with them all of your best behavior throughout the week and remember to thank them for all that they do. We will, of course, be practicing outside, so please remember to bring your sunscreen, good tennis shoes (no hard toes, combat boots, flip flops, sandals or any other footwear will be permitted), and a hat if you choose. These items are for your protection against the elements. It can also be quite chilly at times during camp, so it is wise to bring sweatshirts and/or jackets and pants just in case. In closing, we would like to congratulate each of you on your selection into the 2019 Masonic All-Star Band, and hope you are looking forward to working hard and having a great time – we are. Sincerely, Brad Weber Dan Sodomka Dave Bohnert
