The subspecialty of orthopedics has been around for over 80 years and much has changed in that time. Advances in technology have allowed patients with complex injuries to be

treated more quickly in a less invasive way. inpatient hospital stays with lengthy recovery times and extremely invasive incisions have given way to more outpatient surgeries, smaller incisions and quicker recoveries.

Arthroscopic SurgeryThis minimally invasive surgical procedure is used for joint repair of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle and foot, to treat rotator cuff tears and to reconstruct knee ligaments.

Advanced Technology for Joint Replacementusing computerized technology to aid in the placement of components can lead to better function and a longer lasting joint replacement. Combining this technology with minimally invasive surgical techniques limits bone or tissue loss at the time of surgery.

Computer Assisted Knee ReplacementmAkoplasty (often referred to as mAko) is a surgical robot that utilizes a computerized model of your own knee so that the implant’s size and position are optimized. with this technique, ligament preservation is possible and tensions adjusted to allow for a well-balanced joint before any bone is resected. The bone is then removed very carefully with a robotic arm only in the location where the implant is placed. This allows for the least invasive procedure and the most natural feeling knee replacement.

Anterior Hip ReplacementThis technique allows the placement of the prosthesis without the need to cut muscle. no motion restrictions are required post-operatively and most patients are walking the same day of surgery with minimal pain.

OrthOpedics: Total Joint Replacement

“ We are now able to have patients walk with their new knee or hip the very same day as surgery, with little or no pain. Patients no longer need to stay in the hospital or rehab center for lengthy periods of time.”— Dr. mark Friedman, orthopedic

Have you been considering vision correction surgery like lASik, but had questions about what the procedure involved or if you were a good candidate?

vision correction includes several surgical procedures designed to eliminate or reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses. The two most common types of vision correction surgeries using lasers include laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (lASik) and photorefractive keratectomy (Prk).

lASik and Prk are both procedures that help correct refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. During both procedures, an excimer laser gently reshapes the cornea which reduces your need for glasses or contacts. when choosing an eye surgeon, look for someone who uses the most advanced vision correction technology such as bladeless femtosecond technology and wavefront-based treatment options.

with lASik, a laser first creates a precise, thin flap of cornea tissue. The flap is then gently lifted, so that a second laser can be used to reshape the cornea. The flap is then put back into its original position and acts like your body’s own biological bandage. it re-adheres naturally, so recovery is fairly rapid. most lASik patients can go to work two days later.

Prk is sometimes recommended when a patient has a history of dry eyes, a cornea that’s too thin for lASik or participates in contact sports such as martial arts or boxing. in Prk, the surface layer of cells of the cornea—called epithelial cells—is gently removed before the customized excimer laser reshapes the cornea. Patients usually return to work within five to seven days.

Dr. Maylon Hsu is fellowship-trained in Cornea and Refractive Surgery. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist.

Things to Know

3For Your Health:

Fall Prevention

Falls are a leading cause of injury in adults ages 65 or older. A fall could

limit your activity and keep you from living independently. However, many

falls can be prevented. Regular physical activity builds leg strength and

improves balance. Sturdy shoes can help prevent slips and trips. Removing

obstacles, securing loose rugs and installing handrails will reduce the risk

of falling at home. If you have been experiencing falls or difficulties with

balance, talk to your provider about additional fall prevention strategies.

Visit everettclinic.com/sites/default/files/HomeSafety.pdf for a complete

home safety checklist.

Eating Healthy on a Budget

Eating well doesn’t have to be expensive. Careful planning and a few basic

cooking skills can help you balance both your calories and your budget.

Here are a few wallet-friendly strategies: clip coupons and check weekly

sales; make a grocery list and stick to it; include inexpensive protein

sources—such as beans, eggs and peanut butter; consider canned or frozen

vegetables (without added sugar, salt or sauces); make meals from scratch

(convenience foods are often more expensive). For inexpensive, healthy meal

ideas check out choosemyplate.gov/budget-sample-two-week-menus.

Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

If you have high blood pressure, it’s a good idea to measure your blood

pressure at home. To measure your blood pressure accurately: check at the

same time each day; avoid smoking, caffeine, or exercise for 30 minutes

beforehand; place the cuff around a bare arm; sit with your back supported,

your feet flat on the floor and your upper arm supported at heart level and

don’t talk while checking your blood pressure. Take two or three readings

one minute apart and record all of the results to report to your provider.

Three things to know for your health. This flyer is posted monthly in primary care locations. It highlights important preventive health recommendations. your provider may address these topics with you at your next visit. Learn more at everettclinic.com/foryourhealth.

LASIK Eye Surgery Candidate Checklist■■ Are you at least 21 years old?

Refractive procedures are approved for people over age 18. most patients will need to wait until they are 21 for their eyes to stabilize.

■■ Do you have generally healthy eyes?Candidates should be free of eye diseases including keratoconus, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease and certain retinal and optic nerve diseases.

■■ Are you in good general health?Patients who have certain health problems, including uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune or collagen vascular disease, or take any medication or have any condition that compromises their immune response are not good candidates for laser correction surgery. Certain medications (such as retinoic acid and steroids) may prevent proper healing after a refractive procedure.

■■ Are you nursing or pregnant?Candidates should not be nursing or pregnant when undergoing LASIK. Hormones may affect the stability of your prescription. Previously nursing women are not eligible for surgery until menstrual cycles have normalized, usually after two menstrual cycles.

■■ Is your vision stable?A good candidate must have vision that is stable for at least one year prior to the procedure date.

For more information about LASIK, visit everettclinic.com/lasik or call 425-339-5435.
