Our core Values& COVID-19
We value quality in everything we do.The Kroc Center strives to offer a broad spectrum of impactful, innovative programs and services.
What this means going forward:• Right now, the best way to measure quality is that our users and employees
remain safe.• While our current environment limits the programs and services we can
provide, we will use our creativity and technology to continue to innovate wherever we can.
We value a Kroc Krew that is committed, caring and engaged. The Kroc Center’s employees and volunteers consistently demonstrate radical hospitality and a desire for continual improvement.
What this means going forward:• Our staff will be trained specifically to deal with the challenges that come
with operating the Kroc Center during a global pandemic.• We will continue to make decisions with the wellbeing and safety of our
employees in mind.
We value authentic relationships. The Kroc Center pursues personal connections that promote holistic wellness in an environment of security and significance.
What this means going forward:• By providing meals and wellness checks for some of our most vulnerable
members, the Kroc Center has tried to demonstrate compassion throughout our closure.
• The physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual hardships faced by our users during this crisis will be met with empathy.
We value a thriving community. The Kroc Center cultivates a sense of place that bonds people together and makes our whole neighborhood stronger.
What this means going forward:• We will do our best to balance the health requirements of ‘social distancing’
with the desire of our members to connect with each other one-on-one and in group settings.
• Even as technology helps us to continue programming, we will maintain a focus on the geographic area within roughly three miles of the Kroc Center.
We value all people as children of God.The Kroc Center intentionally strives to reflect and embrace the diverse population we serve.
What this means going forward:• We will remain aware of the disparate impact that the COVID-19 crisis is having
on communities of color and other disadvantaged populations.• Where restrictions prevent us from offering certain services to families in
the greatest need, we will consider the various alternatives at our disposal, including referrals to other Salvation Army programs or outside nonprofits.
The following outline was prepared for the reopening of The Grand Rapids Kroc Center following the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The outline provided is heavily influenced by CDC as well as both state and federal guidelines and recommendations. In addition, much of this information has been gathered and learned in real time from what other fitness facilities are doing and planning both in the U.S. and in other parts of the world.
There is no playbook for managing the Kroc Center amid a global pandemic. In many ways, we will be "building the plane as we fly it." We should be very aware that if there is a resurgence in positive COVID-19 cases in our area or state, the building may need to add back once-lessened restrictions, or close again completely.
About this Road Map
THE GR KROC CENTER ROAD TO REOPENING HANDBOOK PAGE 4
We’re all on this road together. There are several ways that thinking of this reopening plan like a road trip can help us move forward more smoothly:
1. Like a highway, the Kroc Center is a shared resource for all of us to use together.
2. Guidelines are in place not to be restrictive, but with the goal of keeping everyone safe and helping the trip go smoothly.
3. Each person has a responsibility to be aware of the potential hazards around them and be prepared to adjust accordingly.
4. It only takes one person acting carelessly to jeopardize everyone on the road.
5. Conditions can change at any time along our trip, and in many cases are out of our control.
6. Patience and kindness are virtues, especially when we are all tired and anxious – getting a case of ‘road rage’ never solves anything.
7. “Are we there yet?” Not yet. “When will we get there?” Soon!
It’s impossible to know exactly how our journey will unfold, but if we all keep these ideas in mind, it will be easier for everyone!

KROC KREW “Rules of the Road”
THE GR KROC CENTER ROAD TO REOPENING HANDBOOK PAGE 17
Keeping the Kroc Center CleanHere are some of the ways our Kroc Krew will be making extra efforts to keep the building clean for your next visit:
1. Regular cleanings of all ‘in use’ areas will be completed every 90 minutes. • Focus on high–touch and high–traffic areas, including: door/fixture handles, restrooms, counters, handrails, and fitness equipment.• A cleaning checklist will be completed for each department/area and turned into the facility supervisor at the end of each day.• Bathroom checklists should be completed after each cleaning and posted for our members and guests. 2. Additional cleaning will be completed by Kroc Kew members and our vendors.• Our cleaning company will be doing a weekly disinfectant "fogging" service on Sunday nights. • We are attempting to purchase a fogger to add regularly scheduled fogging throughout the week. 3. Building and equipment configuration will reduce potential contamination and encourage social distancing.• The lobby will be configured to encourage one–way traffic through common areas of the building. • All furniture in the lobby and on the fitness floor has been removed and stored in other areas of the building.• All climbing wall holds within reach have been removed and the mats placed in storage. • Fitness equipment is either spaced a minimum six feet apart, removed from the floor, or shrink–wrapped to prevent use. • Hard–to–clean items are not available for use. Examples include yoga mats, bands, foam rollers/blocks, some hand weights, and
jump ropes. • Members will be asked to use only one piece of equipment at a time (opposed to doing a circuit on multiple pieces of equipment at
the same time). Members are also asked not to share equipment.
