Childhood

• Father was a tanner• he had no interest in military life• Forced to go to west point military academy• Given the name Ulysses S. Grant at west point

Early Military career

• Second Lieut., 4th Infantry• fought in the Mexican War• Cited twice for bravery.• He resigned from the Army in 1854
