Why WIOD?
• Policies are designed at a detailed level of industries and products
• Production is characterized by interdependent structures
• Globalization increases the importance of cross-border interdependencies, which makes inclusion of trade in analyses more essential than ever

Overly simplified example: the German exports of cars to the US consumers • “embody” German, French and US labour • are “ responsible” for emissions in Germany, France and the USA Real world: much more complex many more arrows due to increase of international fragmentation

WIOD database: • world input-output tables
– time series 1995-2006 (estimates up to 2009) – all 27 EU countries, 13 other major countries,
estimated Rest of the World – 35 industries
• socio-economic accounts – labour (low/medium/high skilled), volumes & prices – capital (formation and stocks), volumes & prices
• environmental accounts – energy use (25 carriers), emissions to air (8 types) – use of land, materials, water
