EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The ORCA Work Package 8, WP8, is dedicated to “Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation”

and aims at defining, maintaining and coordinating the appropriate mechanisms and tools ensuring

broad visibility and impact of the project’s work and results. The main objective is to promote the

developed project’s concepts and technologies, including the four main show cases the consortium’s

partners are focusing on. Furthermore ORCA Dissemination Plan defines and reports on the promotion

of the five Open Calls, which are planned throughout the project: three Open Calls for Experiments

and two Open Calls for Extensions. In Year 2 three Open Calls have been launched and widely

disseminated: The First Open Call for Experiments, the Second Open Call for Extensions and the

Second Open Call for Experiments.

This deliverable describes how ORCA has followed, in Y2, a comprehensive and effective approach to

dissemination and promotion activities as per the strategy defined in D8.1

During the second year of the ORCA project, the consortium has harvested fruitful results from a wide

range of dissemination and promotion activities. The different communication channels and

dissemination tools identified at the beginning of the project were used in order to promote the main

news, activities and results of the ORCA project. The key activities are listed as follows:

• ORCA organized the Second Engagement Workshop at the third FED4FIRE+ Engineering

Conference (FEC) on 13-15th March 2018, in Paris, France, with the title “The ORCA project:

bridging SDR and SDN”.

• ORCA has participated in 9 relevant external events and present itself to relevant stakeholders

• 16 scientific publications have been published presenting advances marked by ORCA and 7

demonstrations were conducted

• The First Open Call for Experiments, the Second Open Call for Extensions and the Second

Open Call for Experiments were launched between January and December 2018 and widely

communicated

• The outcomes/results of the project during Year 2 has contributed to 2 types of

Standardisation

• In total, ORCA has widely promoted its results and activities to more than 2000 stakeholders

(including subscribers to social media channels, website visitors and mailing lists of both

NGI-EXP, 5G PPP among others).

For the third year of the project, the strategic perspective of the ORCA dissemination and

communication effort will continue to serve the overall success of the ORCA project and maximize

the impact within the communities of target stakeholders. Such effort includes:

• Launch of the 3rd Open Call for Experiments

• Continuation of the active promotion of the activity of the project through different channels

• Development of online tutorials

• Publication of scientific articles and presentations in international peer-reviewed journals and

conferences

• Contribution to Standardisation

• Support the results uptake beyond the project’s lifetime

INTRODUCTION

D8.4 is the Report on Dissemination and Promotion Activities for Year 2. This document provides in

detail the dissemination and communication activities performed during the second year of the project

(January to December 2018). It also presents a series of actions planned for the third year (January to

December 2019). The grounding of such activities was clearly defined and guided by both the

Description of Action (DoA), Deliverable (D) 8.1 – Dissemination, and communication strategy and

plan, Deliverable (D) 8.3 – First Report on Dissemination and communication activities. The purpose

of the current deliverable is therefore two-folded:

1. to report on the ORCA project’s dissemination and communication activities held from month

13 to month 24, i.e. January – December 2018; that is an intermediate report covering the

second year of the project; and

2. to lay out the plan for ORCA’s Year 3 (January – December 2019) activities related to

dissemination and communication, ensuring the fulfillment of targets and supporting the

successful conclusion of the project.

To further detail the dissemination and communication activities conducted during Year 2 and the plan

for Year 3, the remaining part of the document is organised as follows:

• Section 1 focus on activities undertaken and followed in the 2nd Year of the project.

• Section 2 foresees planned activities in the third year of the ORCA project.

• Section 3 briefly summarises the key points of the document and orient towards future tasks.

1 DISSEMINATION ACHIEVEMENTS M13-M24 (JAN-DEC 2018)

1.1 Objectives

The main objectives that the ORCA dissemination and communication activities are pursuing can be

summarized as follows:

• To promote broad visibility of the project’s work and disseminate its results to the

FED4FIRE+, NGI, 5G PPP communities and beyond, while contributing to promote the

overall Future Connectivity Systems Unit offering for increased uptake by innovative players.

• To create and maintain the ORCA project web site, the media communication channels

and the planned dissemination tools to effectively promote the ORCA’s work and guarantee

broad visibility of the project within the whole scientific and innovation Future Internet

landscape.

• To participate to and organize events to maximise the dissemination of the information to

target stakeholders and promotion of ORCA’s Open Calls and project’s results. The Second

Engagement Workshop was held at FEC 3 on 13-15 March, 2018 in Paris, where the Second

Open Call for Extensions was launched. At the time of writing, the partners are discussing and

evaluating which event should be chosen to collocate the ORCA Final Assessment Workshop

in Q4 2019.

• To assist in the organisation and promotion of the ORCA Open Calls, as a means to

broadly promote and validate the ORCA research outcomes and collect feedback from the

work performed by the participants to the competition.

• To establish liaisons with related initiatives and projects both within the ORCA

programme context and in related initiatives, including in particular the 5G PPP, 5G-ACIA,

FED4FIRE+ and NGI communities, for mutual exchange of know‐how and broad visibility of

the ORCA’s work. Contribution to related Open Source initiatives and Standardisation

activities, with a specific focus on 5G PPP, ETSI working groups, WinnF and possibly IETF.

1.2 Target Audience

We have identified the following main target groups.

• New experimenters that could potentially join Fed4FIRE+, especially Small and Medium-

sized players, in the cognitive radio domain that could benefit from the ORCA concepts,

technologies and testbeds to experiment, test and speed up the time-to-market for new

applications and services.

• Innovators and researchers both in the academic and corporate R&D&I domains working

on resources allocation and optimization in dynamic and densely populated wireless

networking domains.

• Industrial players, including small to medium and large organisations, covering industry

manufacturers, telecommunications operators and service providers, such as, but not limited

to, the 5G PPP members and associated members, and industrial organizations that have

participated in former FIRE programme.

1.5 Workshops Organized in Year 2

Second Engagement Workshop

The Second Engagement Workshop was held at the third FED4FIRE+ Engineering Conference (FEC)

on 13-15th March 2018, in Paris, France, with the title “The ORCA project: bridging SDR and SDN”.

Around 80 people attended. Dr Ivan Seskar, (Rutgers University), introduced the project and presented

how ORCA project offers mature, real-time and versatile SDR platforms in advanced FED4FIRE

compliant wireless test facilities. In order to establish end-to-end connectivity with true QoS

guarantees coping with extreme (ultra-low latency, ultra-high throughput, ultra-high reliability)

and diverging (low AND high data rate, time-critical AND non-time critical) communication needs in

different vertical markets, ORCA offers a control plane allowing more efficient allocation of spectral

resources for services that share the same wireless infrastructure and/or spectral bands. It also

discussed how SDN can benefit from advanced SDR functionality for end-to-end slicing.

MobiSys, May 10-15 2017, Munich, Germany

During the 16th edition of the ACM international Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications and

Services (MobiSys), Ingrid Moerman has presented the ORCA vision on end-to-end design of

networked SDR systems thereby highlighting the differences between current SDN approaches and

SDR capabilities. One of the targets of ORCA is to encourage SDR and SDN communities to join

forces through joint experimentation by giving access to advanced software platforms, that support

realistic end-to-end scenarios (beyond PHY, beyond single link) and that offer hardware performance

(through hardware acceleration) with software control (through reconfigurability and

reprogrammability capabilities).

Inspired by DARPA Spectrum Collaboration Challenge, where two ORCA partners are participating

as Team SCATTER, also some thoughts were shared how to improve spectrum spectrum usage by

adding distributed intelligent control and some suggestions were made to rethink the role of

standardisation from fragmented single technology evolutions towards common coordination

mechanisms across technologies.

imec Technology Forum, 23-24 May, Antwerp, Belgium

ORCA project was present during the imec Technology Forum 2018 in May 23-24 2018 in Antwerp,

Belgium, ORCA presented the demo “Flexible and low-latency radio”. Wireless communication is a

key enabling technology for the implementation of advanced manufacturing systems. However

existing wireless solutions do not perform adequately regarding real-time and reliability needs,

especially for industrial applications requiring closed-loop control. The SDR-TAISC prototyping

platform from IDLab, an IMEC research group at Ghent University, tackles this problem by

integrating software with hardware acceleration, hence combining the flexibility of software with the

Page 31: GRANT AGREEMENT NO.: 732174 - orca-project.eu · The ORCA Work Package 8, WP8, is dedicated to “Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation” and aims at defining, maintaining

performance of hardware. By doing so, the platform operates beyond standard performance and

without making radio design more complex.

Figure 23: ORCA’s demo presented at the imec Technology Forum

Mobile World Congress, 26 February – 1st March, Barcelona , Spain

In collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), ORCA’s demo was presented at Mobile

World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona. The demo was showing two 5G use cases (Real-time

control as well as video streaming) that were being addressed by a flexible base station equipped with

edge cloud. The combination of flexible GFDM PHY implementation on USRP RIO that could

shorten the packet length down to 12μs long, together with edge computing via HPE Edgeline EL4000

allowed to achieve a roundtrip latency of 1-2 ms for real-time control of a self-balancing robot. On the

other hand, due to the flexibility of GFDM PHY, the base station could simultaneously accommodate

a video streaming user by changing the waveform configuration in real-time in form of TDD network

slicing.

The demo was presented to three major types of audiences i.e. important persons with formal

invitation, MWC tours and exhibition visitors. Among them, high level executive managers from

industry e.g. TIM, Qualcomm, Nokia, Immersion4, Schneider Electric, NM-2 (participant of ORCA’s

open call), etc. gave positive and constructive comments on how 5G can benefit from edge computing.

In addition, ORCA’s open calls were also promoted in MWC.

1.10 Exploitation and Standardization Contributions

Exploitation Achievements

NI has exploited research work from within the ORCA project towards their products. The L1/L2 API

developed in the course of the ORCA project has been integrated into the NI LTE Application

Framework as can be seen in Figure 31.

Page 40: GRANT AGREEMENT NO.: 732174 - orca-project.eu · The ORCA Work Package 8, WP8, is dedicated to “Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation” and aims at defining, maintaining

Figure 31: L1/L2 API as part of the features of the new LTE Application Framework 2.2 with added hardware

support for the USRP 2974

With this addition to the Application Framework, the scientific and industry community can leverage

the achievements from NI in ORCA directly for their research.

The specification for the L1/L2 API is also made available as part of the LTE Application Frameworks

manual to allow researchers to adapt their higher layer protocol integration to NIs SDR platform,

therefore exploiting platform independence towards the NI SDR system.

To broaden the support of different hardware systems, NI has also added the support of a new SDR

device which incorporates an embedded controller. The support for the new USRP 2974 (see Figure

32) is made available for the 802.11 Application Framework as well as the LTE Application

Framework as can be seen in Figure 31 too. This added support enables researchers to shift from a

more complicated PXI-based system to a simple embedded solution with lower cost including a CPU

and an SDR. The approach of using embedded SDR systems is of particular interest for the testbed

Page 41: GRANT AGREEMENT NO.: 732174 - orca-project.eu · The ORCA Work Package 8, WP8, is dedicated to “Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation” and aims at defining, maintaining

deployment in ORCA and the support of the new USRP 2974 is streamlined with this direction to

enable future testbed deployments to be cheaper in original cost as well as simpler in maintenance,

orchestration and usage.

Standardization Contributions 2018-2019

3GPP

NIs focus in standardization was mainly driven towards monitoring the respective standardization

working groups for specific input that is of help to align the research and work within ORCA to the

overall architecture decisions of 3GPP. Therefore, NI attended the following 3GPP meetings:

- February 2018: Athens, RAN1#92 + RAN2#102

- May 2018: Korea, RAN1#93 + RAN2#102,

- August 2018: Gothenburg, RAN1#94 + RAN2#103

- October 2018: Chengdu, RAN1#94bis + RAN2#103bis

- November 2018: Spokane, RAN1#95 + RAN2#104

The insights and learnings from this monitoring activity have been fed actively into the work of the

ORCA consortium. First, as NI is aligning its architecture towards the 3GPP specification. Secondly, a

summary of these monitoring activities has been presented to the ORCA consortium at the Plenary

meeting in September 2018 to share the information for a streamlined ORCA vision.

The following two contributions to standardization were influenced by work on the mmWave setup in

ORCA.

Meeting TDoc# Title

RAN1#89 R1-1708272 Discussion on explicit and implicit signaling for PT-RS

RAN1#90 R1-1714180 On remaining aspects of beam recovery

The contribution in R1-1708272 is connected to the study on phase noise compensation methods as

presented in D3.3. The work and functionality on beam recovery that is used in the mmWave setup for

ORCA Showcase 1 is partially discussed in contribution R1-1714180.

ETSI Working Groups

IMEC has updated its contribution to the technical report on “Instantiation of the ETSI Generic

Autonomic Network Architecture (GANA) Model onto heterogeneous wireless access technologies

using cognitive algorithms”, and added the ORCA vision in the section “Impact of virtualization and

hardware acceleration techniques”.

IETF

Within its strategic roadmap on deterministic wireless networking, IMEC aligns its developments with

IETF standardisation activities, in particular:

• Constrained RESTful Environments (core), see https://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/core/about/

• IPv6 over Low Power Wide-Area Networks (lpwan),

seehttps://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/lpwan/about/

WInnF

TCD plans to present the hierarchical orchestration scheme introduced in the ORCA White Paper and

then prototyped in the Y2 Showcase 3. We will advocate for the separation of the control and

management between different network segments to their respective communities. Hence, avoiding

one-size-fits-all approaches from a single community, which brings exceeding complexity, and leads

oversimplification of assumptions between different communities. In WInnF, we will present the

hyperstrator and its end-to-end orchestration architecture to network providers, vendors, and

regulators.

1.11 New liasons

Ingrid Moerman (IMEC) has attended the Plenary Meeting of The 5G Alliance for Connected

Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) July 25th 2018 as an observer. 5G-ACIA has been established

to serve as the central and global forum for addressing, discussing, and evaluating relevant technical,

regulatory, and business aspects with respect to 5G for the industrial domain. This alliance is very

relevant to learn about the use cases, needs and requirements for industry 4.0. This alliance targets to

influence the standardization efforts and evolutions in 5G PPP. As a result of this meeting, IMEC is

now in the process of becoming a member of the 5G-ACIA alliances.

2 PLAN OF ACTIVITIES M25-M36 (JANUARY 2019- DEC 2019)

2.1 Dissemination Campaign for Open Calls

ORCA project will launch in Y3 one final Open Call for Experiments. Through the Open Calls for

Experiments ORCA wants to promote the uptake of state-of-the-art SDR solutions in the early design

phase of innovative wireless solutions, while through the Open Calls for Extensions Third Parties will

be involved for extending ORCA SDR platforms with missing functionalities identified by the

consortium.

Figure 34: ORCA Open Calls timeline

As successfully implemented for the previous Open Calls, the upcoming one will be broadly

advertised:

• Publication of the Open Call to ORCA website;

• Publication of the Open Call to all relevant FED4FIRE+ web sites and project web sites

• Dissemination through ORCA social channels, partners and community social channels;

• Dissemination through former FIRE mailing list still running and 5G PPP mailing list

• Flyer to be distributed online and offline;

• A dissemination kit (visual/copy/link) will be distributed to major community websites to

further multiply the visibility;

• ORCA will also evaluate the need for a dedicated webinar in 2019 to introduce the Open Calls

to the research community: academics, fresh graduates, SMEs, wireless networking

professionals, developers;

• Focused presentations will be given at conferences and third parties workshops to promote the

Open Call opportunity.

2.2 Conferences and Workshops

At the time of writing the partners are outlining the Final Assessment workshop will take place,

towards the end of the project, at around M34, and will be dedicated to present and showcase the most

successful experiments, applications, services and products tested and/or originated within the context

of the ORCA project to the broad audience and overall FIRE+ community. This will contribute to

demonstrate the value of the work done within the context of the project for all European ICT

innovators, especially in related initiatives such as the 5G PPP; and to increase visibility about the

FIRE+ initiative and its offering in both the European and international R&D scene.

We will participate to both online and physical selected events as a way to increase awareness of

ORCA’s work, outcomes and Open Calls. The main objective is to ensure participation to the most

relevant ones in order to better inform potential newcomers and engage all relevant stakeholders to the

ORCA technologies, with specific focus on small and medium sized players. ORCA will ensure its

presence with technical papers, presentations, demonstrations, and/or talks (e.g. panels) at relevant

international conferences, workshops, technical events, industrial forums (see list of events below,

scientific dissemination) and cooperation with key European (and possibly international) stakeholders.

Moreover, ORCA will participate in joint FIRE+ workshops/sessions, which include for instance the

FIRE Forum, the annual editions of the Net Futures and the European Conference on Networks and

Communication, EuCNC, and ensure FIRE+ presentations and exhibition booths at major event,

including the ICT 2017 event, the annual edition of the Mobile World Congress and events organised

by then ETSI RRS. This task will also consider attendance to selected market driven events,

exhibitions and fair trades as relevant to the work done in ORCA, organised for instance by the ETSI

RRS. ORCA will take any valuable opportunity to contribute to the project dissemination giving

presentations, talks, teaching activities, demos and training in third parties’ conferences, workshops,

and relevant scientific, industrial and EC-driven events. Each participation will be reported and given

visibility through the online ORCA’s communication channels: website, newsletter, Twitter and

Linkedin accounts. The below table shows a pre-selection of events to be attended in 2019.

2.4 Online Tutorials, Training Materials and Video

An ORCA video to present the research and benefits of ORCA project to a wide general public

audience is in progress. Technology concepts and ORCA’s contribution to the 5G implementation will

be presented through an animation in a very simple and captivating format. The video will be

published and promoted online. It will also be submitted to the attention of the EC communication

team (Horizon Magazine, EC YouTube channel) for further dissemination. Goal of the video is to

simply present the role of EC funded research projects in the European ICT ecosystem and their

benefits to the society. An initial storyboard has been drafted and it will be finalised in Q1 2019.

3 CONCLUSIONS

This document presents the ORCA dissemination and promotion activities run in Y2 and describes a

number of key activities that the project’s partners are focusing on, and will follow up in the next year,

in order to guarantee broad visibility of the project’s work and results so as to engage target

stakeholders and produce relevant and durable impact.

In Y2, the ORCA partners have been active in several ways and pursued various promotional

activities, including:

o Presentation of the ORCA project at several conferences and workshops.

o Completion of 1st Open Call for Experiments and launch of other two Open Calls

o Online promotion of the project through the website and social media channels.

o Contribution to the FED4FIRE+, NGI and 5G PPP communities in the form of information

about upcoming events, organised workshops/sessions and available material.

o Diffusion of ORCA and overall FED4FIRE+ and 5G related news via the project’s

communication channels, as well as the various partners’ individual social communication

means.

The work of WP8 will continue to be intensive in the upcoming months as several efforts are planned

in order to support the broad and effective promotion of various ORCA driven activities including the

launch of the Third Open Call for Experiments in early 2019 and the ORCA Final Assessment

Workshop planned to take place in M34.
