Task:Using a digital camera, capture yourself in a self-por-trait. Take this image on your memory stick to Staples at The Meteor Centre, Derby and enlarge to A0 in black and white.See slide show from LB

Task:Stick the poster on your studio or bedroom wall..Now add 100 words of your own to your A0 poster.To do this you may use hand drawing, collage, stencil-ling, paint, ink, pencil or any other craft medium.You are not allowed to use any digital media to execute your letter-forms. All letterforms added must be taken from typographic reference (they cannot be ‘made-up’).

The words could convey:A theory, a philosophy, a dialogue, a question, a rant, your hopes, your fears, your agenda.

‘A manifesto is a written public declaration of the inten-tions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. The design book in many forms.How you record and collect? This is your personal archive and planning medium. One sample page to be generated per student as an exercise on the word ‘Connectivity’. A doodle fest!

For next week: Matt to ask for image material for ‘Juxtaposition’ brief. Students directed as to ‘where to source images. The problem with secondary resource materials. How to image grab/ what to bring?

MM to demo his Juxtaposition techniques MANIFESTO photographic archive+ found imagery. Emphasis on developing ideas with text/ image/white-space in the composition/ reference to positive/ negative space.

Visual hierarchy will be emphasised Blending Modes, layers, effects.

Homework:

All group asked to create an image/text juxtaposedimageatA3sizeinalimited palette of black, white and two colours only.

The title of this piece is ‘Fusionista’ where a person becomes ‘one’ with architecture, music, pollution, in a sensational visual way.

19th October 2012 / Green Room/ MS102Peer feedback on ‘Fusionista’TYPOGRAPHY LECTURE(GI)A slideshow that details visual hierarchy of type in white space. Elements may include:Overlapping, positive/negative Space, kerning, alignment, leading, scale, limited palette and so on.Examples shown such as Emigre and Vince Frost.

__________________________________________EXERCISE: Typographic ‘Voices’

Students to be given a written dialogue in basic text, based on two people talking.Students to use layout paper or A3 cartridge to generate typographic ‘voices’ for both speakers.One might be louder, one softer, one larger and more dominant, or they might both be whispers.

Group asked to record a conversation in the library or other location using their design books.Draw ideas for layouts for what you have heard. Think about a dynamic arrangement where speaker one is RED and speaker 2 is black, grey (or other).

Consider white-space, typographic style and scale.Research typographic hierarchy in your design book as part of this brief and execute your ideas in Illus-trator as a final piece at A3 size.Listen to typeradio.org while you work!This work will be placed on display in the UniversityLibrarys in 2013.

All work to be peer reviewed and placed on display in the studio.Special mention will be made of work that really conveys a sense of narrative and character. How was this said and to whom? In what manner were the words spoken?We are looking for a sense of control over typo-graphic environment and white-space.

All students will be asked to decide on a theme and to plan an experience next week during the tutorial week. They must do this as a team of x 4.They can choose to do something creative, exploratory, brave, fake, experimental or unconventional. You might go dog racing, spend a night around a radio listening to the world service, or produce an Andy Goldsworthy style installation in nature etc.

Display your images in the studio in your teams.We should be able to see how you have recorded your event in a personal way.Your photographic approach may differ from your friends. Peer review process*

Pagination planning exercise (GI)

Working on A4 paper folded in half to create A5 layouts, develop pagination plans for your magazine.This version must feature words and images working together in harmony, unison or conflict.

Gemma to show examples on screen sample layouts. The weight/tonality of grey markers will also help to show lighter and darker type. You may show images as simple outlines or more elaborate sketches.The emphasis on the exercise will be not only ideas for layout but also continuity between pages.Gemma will recommend body copy/ font choice.

MM to demo INDESIGN 2 Working with grids, type sizes and leading/ kerning. Downloading fonts and adding them to your own type catalogue. Working with swatches and pantone colours to create a consistency in the design. Print Booklet command.

Indesign exercise: Access your images from the experience that you had last week. Add them to a layout in Indesign and apply them to an eight page document of facing pages. Create a design that you utilises your images and add your own type and headings. Your priority should be grid and consistency.

HOMEWORK: Create a magazine design for pages 1-8 using INDESIGN.Print out in colour spreads for discussion/ refinement next week.

All students to place colour spreads on studio wall.This first draft is for discussion and notation.Peer Assessment in teams of three. Each student to review 2x projects apart from their own.

Check for the following:Conforms to a grid?Shows typographic hierarchy?Shows ‘washing-lines’ and repeats throughoutShows understanding of limited palette.Is legible?Is it grammatically correct?Is it a rewarding visual experience for the viewer?Is the imagery well staged and composed?

Create a needs analysis for your partner that enhances the magazine in five key areas.You may notate in pencil directly onto their work and remove it from the wall if necessary.Homework:Respond to studio discussion and produce and print your booklet in colour./ two copies.Upload to Issuu.com as a single page Pdf.

ILLUSTRATOR DRAWING TECHNIQUES 1 This session is a precursor to the signs, pictograms and symbols project next week.

We need to look at vectors, the pen-tool, creating sections and using levels to separate contrasting tones. Working with photographs to overdraw and to create hybrid signs. Cutting and combining vectors.

Brief:Create a set of hybrid signs that can exist in the Derby landscape/ cityscape. Create thought-provok-ing visual combinations where one familiar sign is used to discuss a foreign theme.

Homework:Record the signs and symbols of Derby. Combine them in curious ways. Create a full colour sign within A3 for next week, photographed on location.

Signs on wall in studio with situation photographs.to reveal context.Peer reviewDoes the work evidence understanding of signs, their context and content?Does this work create a playful, challenging narra-tive, or a ask a question?Does this work communicate an idea?Is the sign convincing as a sign?In what other context would this sign seem exciting?

A SHORT ANIMATION: Create a short film that shows a typographic alphabet from A to Z.To do this, you may collect letterforms, create them, draw them in chalk, photograph them, destroy them or dig them into the landscape. Each letterform must be found, or crafted in some way.You may create them out of parked cars, obtain them from bicycles, clothes, or illuminate forms us-ing lightbulbs Try to be as creative in your choice of letterforms as you are in your treatments of them.

Your film should last no more than 60 seconds, end-ing on Z and contain a title ‘ ALPHABETTICA’ and any credits.
