A strong and recognizable visual identity isessential to building awareness and recognitionfor NCJW. These Graphic Guidelines werecreated to ensure that we represent NCJWconsistently and effectively across all of ourcommunications. They explain and demonstrateappropriate use of our logos, tagline, style, andthe components of our Visual Tool Kit.

Careful use of these guidelines will reinforcethe truths, or pillars, that have guided our workfor over a century: our pioneering spirit, ourcommitment to Jewish values, and our abilityto act as both thinkers and doers. They alsosupport our distinctive personality traits:Weare compassionate, courageous, and powerful. These qualities should permeate the contentand design of all of our communications.

Our logo is the primary visual representation ofNCJW. It is a unique, eye-catching symbol thatpowerfully represents who we are and why weare different.

Highlighting the W reflects our emphasis onwomen — our members, our audience, and oftenthe recipients of our support. Turning the W onits side spotlights women’s changing role in society. It also creates a double arrow, pointing forwardto graphically convey our belief in looking aheadand moving toward a better future.

The two prongs of the W also complementour tagline, which has two parts: A faith in thefuture. A belief in action. And finally, theseprongs reflect our dual nature:We are boththinkers and doers.

The lockup consists of the NCJWlogo, name, and, on the local level, section name — which are “locked”together in a set relationship.Always use the authorized digitalor reproduction artwork providedby the NCJW marketing and

communications department. Do notattempt to redraw or retype the logoor name.

The prescribed lockup should beused wherever possible. However, inextremely special circumstances, ourlogo and name may be split from the

specific lockup configuration. In thesecases, our name must still appearprominently near the logo. An exampleof this is on our business cards(see page 16).

Gill Sans, a sans serif font, should beused in all of our communications —for headlines, body text, captions, etc. It is clean and simple, givinga contemporary feel to ourcommunications that mirrors ourforward-thinking spirit. Gill Sansis also the same font used in ourlogo lockup.

Gill Sans comes in many styles;however, you should use only the onesshown here: Light, Light Italic, Book,Book Italic, Regular, Regular Italic, Bold, and Bold Italic. These should beselected from font pulldown menus— not created by applying styles tothe primary font.

Do not use the following styles: LightShadowed, Shadowed, Condensed,Extra Bold, Extra Bold Display, BoldExtra Condensed, or Ultra Bold.

To differentiate between various levelsof information on a page, vary the size, color, and style, or switch betweenuppercase and lowercase type.Examples of how to use fonts areshown throughout these guidelines.

Gill Sans is available in the AdobeFont Library and can be purchasedfor use on Macs or PCs.

If you are using a computer thatdoes not have Gill Sans, use Verdana, which is preinstalled on all Macsand PCs.Verdana is an appropriatealternate font because it is a sans seriffont that looks similar to Gill Sans.

Verdana is also the preferred choicefor live text on website pages.Verdana is only available in oneweight. Apply bold and italic stylesas necessary.

Do not substitute for Gill Sans withany font other than Verdana, becauseit will drastically change the look ofour communications.

Color is an integral part of ourvisual identity. Our primary colorpair consists of:

NCJW Blue — Pantone®* 2955 (Navy)— used for our logo and as thedominant color of all communicationsmaterials, and

NCJW Green — Pantone 376 (BrightSpring Green) — used as an accentto NCJW Blue.

The contrast between these colorsgives our communications a vibrantand distinctive look.

NCJW Blue is a rich, deep, andwarm color that provides impactand suggests strength. NCJW Greenis a fresh and modern color thatcomplements NCJW Blue. Greenalso represents “go” and symbolizespower and growth.

When planning to print materials,be sure to specify Pantone ink colorsahead of time with your printer/vendor. These colors are readilyavailable, but, as with many inks, the printer may need to orderthem in advance.

NCJW Blue should be used for allone-color applications, except in laser-printed or photocopied materials, which appear in neutral colors, i.e.,black and white.

Avoid clip art.Instead, show subjectsin action.

Avoid trite metaphors.Instead, show womenworking together toconvey teamwork.

ImageryA picture truly can be wortha thousand words. So, when selectingimages, think about the messageyou are trying to communicate.

Use black-and-white or colorphotography that depicts womenof intelligence and power. Ourimages should show women takingaction, being compassionate, anddemonstrating courage.

Avoid beauty shots, posed portraits, and staged shots of large groupsas much as possible. Do not useclip art or images that representtrite metaphors.

Shoot from different perspectives orangles, preferably against interestingbackdrops, rather than blank walls.Try to prevent harsh shadows thatcan be caused by direct flash.

And use professional photographerswhenever you can.

For all photographs, be sure tosecure appropriate subject releasesand usage permissions, and, whenusing a photo, credit the imageappropriately.

Letterhead

The rotated W of our logo is aunique, action-oriented symbol andthe cornerstone of NCJW’s visualidentity. Related graphic elements canbe developed to make our materialseven more vibrant and distinctive.

For example, the letterheadbelow uses a thin, linear versionof the W pointing toward ourtagline to add emphasis and interest.

The back of the business cardbelow uses one point of the W tocreate an arrow and add powerto the design.
