GRATINGGrating is an open grid assembly of metal bars, running in one direction, are spaced by rigid attachments to crossbars running perpendicular to them or by bent connecting bars extending between them.

Uses and ApplicationsGrating is used when light, air, heat or sound must pass between flooring levels. It is also used when liquids or debris cannot be allowed to collect. Other qualities that make grating useful are its easy installation and fabrication, its adaptability to complex floor patterns, and its high strength-to-weight ratio.CONSTRUCTIONFactors to consider with the construction of grating are:ElementsSpacing of Bearing Bars and CrossbarsMaterialsSurfacesFinishesMarking System

ELEMENTSBearing bars are Load carrying bars made from steel strip or slit sheet. extending in the direction of grating span.Crossbars are The connecting bars, made from steel strip, slit sheet, or rolled bars which extend across the bearing bars, usually perpendicular to them.Span of Grating is The distance between points of grating support, or the dimension of the bearing bars in this direction.

Spacing of Bearing Bars and CrossbarsIKG Industries manufactures gratings with many different spacings for bearing bars and crossbars The spacings are defined by the distances center to center of the bearing bars (Bearing Bar Centers) and the distances center to center for crossbars (Crossbar Centers). MATERIALSIKG offers three material types for Weldforged steel grating:Steelstainless steel and CorTen steelThe most common of these grating materials is plain steel.

SURFACESSurface is the side of the grating where load is applied and where there is traffic. IKG industries offers three different surfaces for Weldforged Steel Grating:Plain Grating: It features the smooth sides of bearing bars with the twisted crossbars for traction.Serrated Grating: Grating which has the top surfaces of the bearing bars or crossbars or both, notched.Mebac Surface: This is a metal-encapsulated grit surface manufactured exclusively by IKG Industries. The Mebac process employs molten metal to bond a special grit to the walking surface of the grating. This provides a durable surface with a high coefficient of friction.

FINISHESThe Finish of grating is the coating, usually paint or galvanizing, which is applied to the grating. The purpose of the finish is to protect the steel from corrosion. IKG Industries offers steel grating with one of three standard finishes: bare steel (unpainted or mill finish), galvanized or a standard powder coat finish.MARKING SYSTEMThe marking system is simply the means by which IKG designates different types of grating.Type W/B 1 3/16 x 4 Type W/F 1 3/16 x 2Type W/D 15/16 x 2Type W / DF 15/16 x 2Type W / BA 1 3/16 x 4Type W/FA 1 3/16 x 2

BAR SIZESAlong with the designation for bearing bar and cross bar spacings, bearing bar size must also be given in specifying the type of grating. The Bearing Bar Size indicates the dimensions of the cross section of the rectangular bearing bar. IKG Industries uses a bar size number to indicate bearing bar sizes for Weldforged grating .Bar Size Numbers and Bearing Bar DimensionsBar Size #Bearing Bar Dimensions (Inches)13/4" X 1/8"23/4" X 3/16"31" X 1/8"41" X 3/16"4A1" X 1/4"51-1/4" X 1/8"61-1/4" X 3/16"6A1-1/4" X 1/4"71-1/2" X 1/8"81-1/2" X 3/16"8A1-1/2" X 1/4"91-3/4" X 3/16"9A1-3/4" X 1/4102" X 3/16"10A2" X 1/4"112-1/4" X 3/16"11A2-1/4" X 1/4"122-1/2" X 3/16"12A2-1/2" X 1/4"SPECIFY GRATING

Grating is specified by giving the bearing and cross bars spacing & the required bar size. For Example, let us say, for Weldforged grating the specification is as given below:W/B -6 Steel Serrated GratingWhere:W/B Indicates the spacing6 Indicates the bearing bar sizeSteel Indicates the materialSerrated Indicates the surfaceGalvanized Indicates the finish

TREADSA panel of grating having carriers and nosing attached by welding, and designed specifically as a stair tread is known as a tread.Treads are bolted or welded inside stair stringers to provide a walking surface for the stairsELEMENTS OF A TREADFactors to consider with the construction of treads are:ElementsGrating panel is the grating used for a tread and has all of the same qualities and elements as grating used for other applications Nosing is a special L-section member serving as the front or leading edge of a stair tread, or of grating at the head of a stair Carrier plates are flats or angels which are welded to the grating panel and nosing of a stair tread and are bolted to a stair stringer to support the tread.

Materials/Surfaces/FinishesGrating treads have the same materials, surfaces, and finishes as grating

Marking SystemAll the things required to designate grating must also be stated in designating treads. These are bearing bar and crossbar spacings, bearing bar size, material type, surface, and finish. In addition to these, the nosing type and carrier plate information for treads must be specifiedTread DimensionsTread widths are measured in the direction of the crossbars, just like in regular grating. However, the width of the tread includes the width of the nosing attached. Thus, the tread width is the width of the grating panel used plus the nosing . Tread length is measured in the direction of the span. It is simply a measure of the length of the grating panel plus the thickness of the carrier plates
