Gather materials and cut all fabrics to the measurements given above. To give the wrap a rounded edge (which also makes applying the bias binding easier), trim the corners slightly and evenly on all four corners on the lining fabric only, as seen in the photos. Step Two: Attach Pockets. Prepare each pocket piece by folding raw edges towards the wrong side of fabric ½” on the bottom and two sides. Press. On the top edge, fold under ¼” and press. Fold this under ½” and press again. Edgestitch here close to the fold to secure top seam.

What You’ll Need: quilting cottons, upholstery weight, and linens all work well for this project. outer fabric – (1) 18.5 x 8.5” lining fabric – (1) 18.5 x 8.5” quilt batting –(1) 18.5 x 8.5” pocket pieces* – (1 each of the following) 5.5 x 4.5” (notebook); 6.5 x 6.5” (cards); 4 x 4” (postage stamps) double fold bias binding – approximately 84” in length Step One: Prepare the Pieces. Place the lining fabric right side up on a surface. Using a yard stick or flexible tape measure, place a ruler across the width of the lining. Place a pin at 3.5”, 10”, and 16”. This will be your center point for placing each of the pockets. Placing the bottom pocket edge 1” up from the lining raw edge, use these pins to place your pockets in place from left to right: notebook, cards, postage stamps. Pin in place, removing your center marking pins as you go. Stitch around the two sides and bottom of each pocket to attach to lining, being sure to backstitch well at each side. Step Three: Sandwich the Wrap. Place the outer wrap fabric flat on a surface, wrong side up. On top of this, center the quilt batting. And on top of that, place the lining fabric with pockets, right side up. Pin around all four edges. Using the rounded edges on the lining fabric as your guide, cut the excess edges on the batting and outer fabric to match. Machine baste around the entire wrap, ¼” from the edge.

Step Four: Make the Folds. Using a ruler and tailors chalk or a pencil, mark a line from top to bottom in the center point between the Notebook and Cards folders. Repeat for the other fold – between the Cards and Stamps pockets. Machine stitch – through all three layers of the wrap – where you just marked with pencil, thereby making the ‘folds’ of the wrap.

Step Five: Attach the Binding. Beginning at one long side of the wrap, and working with the outer fabric facing up, place the bias binding over the edge of the wrap, so that the raw edge is flush against the fold of the binding. Machine stitch 1/8” from the edge to secure binding to the wrap. Continue around the entire wrap, trimming the binding as you get close to the edge, leaving enough to fold over and stitch over where you began.

Step Six: Attach the Ties. Cut two lengths of bias binding to 12” each. Machine stitch close to the edge along the entire length of each binding strip, thereby ‘closing’ the binding. Place one strip on the outer fabric edge, just inside of the bias binding edge you attached in the last step. The tie should be in the center of the short side, on the side of the Postage Stamp pocket. Fold the short raw edge of the strip under, and pin in place here. Stitch securely through all layers to secure edge of tie.

Attach the second tie in the same manner, on the outer fabric, on the fold line you stitched between the Notebook and Cards pocket panels. Tie a knot on the unattached end of each of the two ties, and trim with pinking shears to prevent fraying. Alternately, you could fold over and stitch the raw edge under to do the same.

Step Seven: Get Writing! In the words of a very special woman, “Silent gratitude isn’t very much to anyone.” -Gertrude Stein And of course, the wraps can be used for much more than ‘thank you’s’ – they’re wonderful for any type of correspondence, especially great for little ones to encourage letter writing. Pattern Notes:

• Pockets are sized to hold a 3.5 x 5.5” moleskin notebook, 4x6” cards and envelopes. Adjust your pocket pattern pieces accordingly if you’ll be using other sizes.

• The linen bird fabric used in the photographed wrap is by Cicada Studio, the cards seen are by The BlackApple. Both can be found on Etsy.
