Socrates was a classicalGreek Athenian philosopher.Credited as one of the foundersof Western philosophy, he is anenigmatic figure known chieflythrough the accounts of laterclassical writers, especially thewritings of hisstudents Plato and Xenophon, andthe plays of hiscontemporary Aristophanes. Manywould claim that Platos dialoguesare the most comprehensiveaccounts of Socrates to survivefrom antiquity. Through his portrayal in Platosdialogues, Socrates has becomerenowned for his contribution tothe field of ethics. 3. Socrates lived during the time of the transitionfrom the height of the Athenian hegemony toits decline with the defeat by Sparta and itsallies in the Peloponnesian War. At a timewhen Athens sought to stabilize and recoverfrom its humiliating defeat, the Athenianpublic may have been entertaining doubtsabout democracy as an efficient form ofgovernment. Socrates appears to have been acritic of democracy, and some scholarsinterpret his trial as an expression of politicalinfighting. Claiming loyalty to his city, Socrates clashedwith the current course of Athenian politics andsociety. 4. Socrates drinkinghemlock. 5. Abraham Lincoln was born on February12, 1809, in Hardin County (now LaureCounty), Kentucky. His parents were ThomasLincoln, a farmer, and Nancy Hanks. His familywas poor. Abraham had one brother and onesister. His brother died in childhood. They grewup in a small log cabin house, with just one roominside. Although slavery was legal in Kentucky atthat time, Lincolns father, who was areligious Baptist, refused to own any slaves.When Lincoln was seven years old, his familymoved to Indiana, and later to Illinois. 7. The Vatican states that "This luminous messenger of Gods love was bornon 26 August 1910 in Skopje, a city situated at the crossroadsof Balkan history. , whereas the official website of the Nobel Prize states"Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gnocchi Bojaxhiu in Skopje", "Former Scup, atown in the Ottoman Empire." She was the youngest of the children of a familyfrom Shkoder, Albania, born to Nicolle and Drana Bojaxhiu. Her father, whowas involved in Albanian politics, died in 1919 when she was eight years old.
